Cheap dealer tyres?

Featured Replies

Just took my VRS in for its MOT and Service at the local skoda dealers, unfortunately they couldnt shift the sump plate to change the oil without fear of cracking it so having to take it in again next week when they'll have spares in so if they do then theyll replace it. But got the usual recommendations on the MOT check list amongst them were two new front tyres as mine are at 3mm apparently (but dont seem 3mm to me) anyway their quote was approx £42 per tyre which seemed pretty cheap to me when comparing with some of the tyre prices you guys throw around on here. I didnt ask at the time what spec they were but considering getting them done as I have felt the front end start to creep on a few occasions - could be something to do with my corner approach speed though! Has anyone got any idea what these are and if they're going to do a job? Ive recently moved house and dont use the car as much these days so not wanting to spend a lot on it and not overly concerned about how hard wearing they are as my annual milage will be about 5K max. They also recommended £25 worth of tracking so will probably get that done at the same time. Also new pads and disks front and rear which I wont!

Thanks for any advice on this

Hmm ... mine (bought second-hand) came with Fulda (Goodyear Dunlop, made in Germany) and Barum (Continental, made in Czech) tyres, which were fitted by the dealers and were about that price (car came with the bills). They seem OK, but there again I don't drive like a loon, or know much, so take with pinch of salt...

I'd guess these are either the bottom of the barrel when it comes to budget tyres or they've misssed a "1" off the front of the price. Ask the dealer for the brand.

You may not do as many miles as you used to, but you've said you drive quick. You're in contact with the road via 4 little pieces of rubber about 3' x 8'. Best not to skimp in this area IMHO.

If they are £42 each, decent tyres can be had for £65. You're saving about £90. If they last 3 years, you're risking your life for a few pence a week.

Good point Hannibal. Im sure they will probably be better than my current worn tyres and they're OK on the whole, I do ease off a bit more on the corners these days as im aware that my grip isnt perhaps what it was. He said I had a crack on my front bushes as well which off the top of my head was about £150 or so but I could be wrong. I've a lot of out goings this month and possibly next but think I need to be considering allocating some decent funds the cars way. I'll probably have to do it in stages, im thinking tyres first then bushes and tracking then disks and pads, does this seem like a good priority order?

Thanks for your help on this, im afraid cars arent my area of expertise! But I must say I knew I wanted a VRS, got one and never regretted it, wouldn't change it for anything else (realistically!).

Sorry just seen your message there Irvtheswerv. What tyres would you recommend for £65? - think I could stretch to that this month.

Don't ask what tyres to get, there are plenty of threads on the subject if you do a search.

Recommended cheap ones are Toyo Proxes T1-Rs, Kumho KU31s and Falcons (I can't remember the model). I'm sure someone will mention Hankooks and Uniroyals.

i bought a vrs in january and it has got wanli tyres, which are budget.

dont recomend as there is a horrible whineing noise that comes from them. sounds like a f***ked wheel bearing.

I have these!! lol, well funny noise with them, grips ok tho!

I went for Toyo T-1Rs. They are great adn due to a friendly relationship with my local independant, i got them for a bargain price of £70 a corner, fitted and balanced!! :) I would reccommend these, they grip really well and they don't breack the bank. I think they are about £65 on camskill, but that's not fitted( usually about £10 a tyre)

Hankook v12 an excellent tyre and good value in my opinion not really budget but about £70 a corner but I don't trust very cheap rubber. You will pay top dollar at dealers and Kwik Fit. Try a small independent and say you saw the tyres for a certain price on Camskill and haggle: mine matched the price!

seriously they are £70 a corner! :o wow, I am shocked as I paid just under £50 for my V12s and I think they are great. Might be more to do with my wife knowing the owner but didn't realise I was getting such a good deal

they are ok that way but the noise drives me crazy, have to have the sterio up loud. :D

would grudge replacing them just now tho as they are nearly new.

You've bought a performance car - fit performance tyres! Don't skimp!

I put on Toyo Proxes T1-Rs - the last two cost me £160 I think from memory at Protyre...

Bare in mind, the LEGAL minimum is 1.6mm so you have a bit of life in the ol' black hoops yet! The main concern is that 90% of punctures occur in the last 10% of tyre wear. as you start with around 7-8mm, you should be ok for a few months but if you get punctures, it may be more economical to get nre tyres as Kwick-Krap will sting you for around £17 a pop (Pun intended)!

Wow thanks for the replys guys, didnt take the dealer up on his tyres as I agree with what you're all saying - don't be so cheap it's not worth the risk! So did a bit of research and the cheapest fully fitted Proxys I could find were with etyre at £170 for two. I just had a look at quick fit out of interest and they're doing a special on Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 tyres so fully fitted they would be £185 for two which seems pretty good as at etyre they would be £225 and national £265. Might be tempted to go with the Eagles, are they worth the extra few quid? Just to confirm the VRS is 205/45/R16 size right?

Cheers

Rob

I'm pretty sure I had the eagles on before I got Kumho Ecstas, and the eagles were rubbish in the wet and worse than useless in snow or ice. Plus I had to run them at 36psi or every bump in the road felt like a gremlin had hit me under the chin with a mallet.

Oh right thanks for the tip on those. Cant remember what my current tyres are but they were embarrassing in the snow so was hoping for something a bit better for all conditions. Might be drifting towards the proxys then, they seem to get alot of good press on here.

I just put Pirellie P Zero Nero's on for £155 the pair. Try the search function there are aproximatley 1 zillion threads on here about Fabia Tyres.

In answer to your other Q: My vRS is 205:45:16 W as standard. If your not sure go have a look at the tyre wall and see what's on there now.

I recently had 4 PZero Nero's fitted by a local independent for about £260

As others have said it is certainly worth giving your local independant place a call to see what they can do for you. I recently had four Uniroyal Rainsport 2 tyres fitted for £75.50 per corner, including tracking and balancing. Very grippy tyres and as the name implies good in the wet, backed up by many reviews on here too. As for the bushes, the Seat Cupra ones are a very worthwhile mod, direct replacement and will not wear as easily as Skoda ones- they make the ride feel sharper too. I've had them done and would recommend them. As for brakes, I got some mintex discs and pads for the rear not too long ago for £50ish delivered from a place called JKM I think. Hope this helps you buddy
