A '56 Octy rusting like this?

Featured Replies

Agree- must have been used in extreme conditions or damaged. My 8 yo Passat at 140,000 miles had slight rust on the exhaust and nothing anywhere else.

The dealer in question from my original posts is Henry's, Glasgow...

Unsurprisingly, I see the car is still being advertised on their site for £10k, 6 weeks down the line.

Registration is SG56 VCM

"Waiting on a call from the dealer to find out if Skoda will pay for a re-spray of both rusty sills. Been told it is highly unlikely as car is now 3.5 years old and car does not have a full dealer service history so I have "no brand loyalty"!"

Skoda not interested because it is not corrosion, in their opinion! Wonder what the orange/red stuff is then? Surely it can only get worse, or was I told perkys during my Chemistry degree?

That is definitely badly repaired accident damage or salt water flood damage. No '56 plate cars rust like that especially Skoda's. In fact, i've never seen an Octavia with any rust apart from the stone chipped sills as mentioned.

Funnily enough, my '06 sport, which i have now sold, had the same blisters on the sills, yet my '06 Ambiente i now use doesn't suffer at all. Sills are perfect and it has nearly twice the mileage. The sport had front mudflaps fitted from new, yet my Ambiente has just had them fitted by me at 69,000. Strange.

I have an 06 Octavia Sport and the paint started flaking off the passenger side sill, above the protection strip which runs the full length of the car, despite having dealer fitted front mud flaps. Sill was re-painted under warranty a year ago, however, 12 months later and the problem has returned on the passenger side leaving "rust patches". The same problem is starting on the drivers side. Have taken car to two paint shops, both saying it is a design fault with the car; paint above protection strip is too exposed and stone chips are causing damage to the paint ultimately leading to the flaking.

The rear wrap around bumper has the same problem as you cannot fit rear mudflaps.

Has anyone else heard of this problem.

Do you ever notice the battery being weaker than it should be if you don't drive the car for a few days? The reason I ask is if you have a 12v electrical line that has worn insulation and it's dumping current to the chassis you could be seeing the zinc coat breaking down due to Galvanic Corrosion and iron oxide crusting through on a weak and exposed area of the door. It could be worth checking before you spend any more money repairing the damage. If you know you're not going to drive the car for a few days measure the voltage of the battery when you park up then again in a few days before you drive it. if you see more than a nominal drop in voltage you could have a short that's tickling up the rust over time.

You really shouldn't see any rust on a 3.5 year old car unless there is an underlying problem (or you live by the sea and never ever clean it).

I am not aware of any battery problems, but will check it out thanks. I don't live close to the sea and I do clean my cars very regularly, which is all the more reason I am annoyed with all of this. Went for a second opinion at another dealer on Saturday, who was more concerned that I hadn't got a full Skoda service history and thought it was time I should be changing my car to get rid of my problem. "Happy driver"..............not at the moment!

That almost looks like it's been up to it's sills in salt water. Swamped in a flood perhaps?

Not to put too fine a point on it but what a bunch of TW*TS! There is absolutely no way way a car of this age should suffer from that level of corrosion. How on Earth can an independent service history contribute to body failure?

Name and shame mate. Let us all know who these expert dealers are so we can all avoid them. Sorry for the rant but I am pis*ed off on your behalf.

Mark

Thats scandelous! I'd RUN away as far as possible from that. Even though the dealer has said it would be fixed, what other problems could be underlying? Probably none but at the same time, a 3 year old car in that condition does not bode well.................just my 2p's worth :D

WHERE ABOUTS IS THIS CAR FOR SALE I THINK I SAW IT YESTARDAY , IS IT IN HENRYS SKODA IN GLASGOW??

Yes its in Henrys.

wow i have just had a lucky escape then lol they were going to fix it for me but i will phone today and tell them to put it where the sun dont shine lol

There are plenty more better cars out there. I am suprised they still have the car, and have either not fixed it themselves to aid the sale or punted it off through auction.

West End garage Broxburn. They use Eastern/Western Bodyshop also in Broxburn, who are a Skoda approved repairer. West End will not challenge the body shop who claim the problem is not their workmanship but stone chip damage. Two independent body shops have looked at the re-spray and cannot be sure a primer was used. They both say only one thin layer of paint and lacquer was applied, not to the same depth as the original manufacture, which has led to this adhesion problem. I am also led to believe sill's should receive a "softer" paint so that it absorbs stone chips rather than cracking under impact, does anyone know about this?

Although there is corrosion, West End state that Skoda's 10 year anti corrosion warranty only covers problems from the inside out.

This is now with Skoda customer services, although I'm not holding out much hope from their initial reaction. Have already sounded out legal advice and What Car complaints contact details.

Hi Sandyvrs

Sorry you had to go through all that, as soon as I saw the pictures of the vRS in question I had a look at it for myself, you were right the paintwork was not the best, we have since disposed of it. I trust you have since got the right vRS.

When the New Fabia vRS arrives at the start of July you will have to pop by for a wee drive.
