1.8 TSi @ 180 BHP?

Featured Replies

I picked up my estate 1.8 TSi at the beginning of March. Chatting to the dealer, who seemed pretty knowledgeable, he told me that the most recent batch of 1.8 TSi engines hadn't been detuned, rather they were running at what he told me was stock Audi performance, i.e. 180 BHP. He said he had no reason to believe mine was any different.

Anyone else hear this? Or (optimistically) has anyone RR'd a new 1.8 TSi?

A friend of mine took his on a RR somewhere near Dartford the name of the company escapes me and his was making 182BHP and I heard of another chaps one making 184BHP before.

Both cars where built early last year.

I think the concensus is that these put out 180bhp from the factory. JKM (who I use for tuning) saw 182bhp iirc on a standard Octavia 1.8TSi and I 100% trust their dyno dynamics rolling roads accuracy too.

Thanks guys :) 20 bhp gratis seems like a pretty sweet deal

OK, im confused now James (who mumbled,'it doesnt take much?!')

What exactly is the chart supposed to be showing? I can see the power line for the 1.8TSI at 179 'ks' (I presume 'ps' equiv?)

And the lowest line appears to be the torque curve for the unit - by my reckoning around 195lb/ft as standard (shown as 262.9nm) BUT what are the other two lines showing? They appear to be higher output power and torque curves but I dont see how thats possibly still for the 1.8TSi unit????

EDIT - Ahhh, is it showing a stage one software remap for the 1.8TSi? SO a before and after dyno plot? If so, what software was it as the lines/driveability look very nice.

We already had this discussion some time ago.

On RevoTechnik page you can find this image (see Note):

Wow - imagine that - almost VRS outputs as standard but more economical.

Now imagine it remapped to 275lb/ft torque and the tractive abilities of a 4wd chassis.....

Hmmm. Nice. I like that idea a lot. :D

Skoda always seem to under quote their power output :)

I know it's a bit subjective, but my 1.8TSi feels like the same punch as my Mk 1 vRS used to, and that was supposedly 180bhp.

But then if the Mk 1 was quoted at 180, what was it actually???

180 haha!

My Mk1 in very good health reported 188bhp and 199lbs/ft of torque standard

If it feels similar thats impressive as the Mk2 is a fair bit heavier too.

I think VAG in general tend to be a little conservative in their power quotes as in you're unlikely to get an engine with less than the quoted power output. My PD 105 for example made 120 bhp at the flywheel in a dyno run prior to remapping last Saturday. The guy running the dyno said 110-115 was pretty normal in his experience with this engine as stock.

I have a 1.8 Tsi that was built earlier this year. I guess that this car is even more powerful. Great stuff  I haven't driven it that quickly yet. However, its nice to know the power is there if I need it. I think its a great car / engine for the money...

Having read this thread I got thinking - would it be possible to spec up 1.8TSI 4x4 to somewhere near a vrs type spec and get a care nearly as quick but cheaper with the added bonus of 4 wheel drive?

Er, no.

Add in even just a few options on a 4x4 estate (bigger wheels, cruise etc) and its the same price as a vrs - hmmm.. and then its got a higher co2 so i'd pay MORE tax.. doh!

Can any of you kindly tell me what sort of average consumption you're getting with the 1.8tsi? I'm just about to order a new one and am torn between sensible 1.4tsi and the ore interesting 1.8. I'd like particularly to hear that the latter is very economical at about 75mph on m'ways!

Mid 30s general driving really from the 1.8TSI.

Agreed. Fairly longish motorway cruise showed me 38.4. But middle 30's more usually.

Recently did trip from Poole to Brighton, about 100 miles, but with 4 up and luggage, and by the end of the m'way/dual carriage way bit, with little or no hold-ups, it was only 32 so maybe the load affects it too.

This is all on Tesco 99.

My 1.8TSI DSG is very new and so far registering 36mpg with very mixed driving over 700 miles

About 30 mpg for me. 35 mpg is possible but only on longer trips whilst showing some restraint.

Thanks everyone - very prompt and much as I feared.

I simply do not know where they get the "official" consumption figures which suggest that you should be able to get 40mpg in the 1.8. I suppose that diesels use relatively less fuel than an equivalent petrol one when they're doing short journeys which we all make most of the time really.

I reckon that if I work on an average of 35 mpg, it will cost me an extra £600 pa in fuel over my current diesel.

But I like the idea of the lighter 7-speed DSG costing less to service. And I like petrol more than diesel in NVH terms.

Perhaps I should get the 1.4 and have it chipped...

I think there are some issues around the feasibility of chipping the new build VAG engines. Seems it's difficult to not happening. Or maybe I misunderstand.

The 7DSG is only good for 250Nm.

So every extra torque may damage it on the long run.

Ive been advised by one forum sponsor that it isnt possible as its protected/locked but Revo say its no problem and JKM have already done one with Revo and got 275lb/ft torque and 220bhp iirc. Brilliant gains imo. As I understand it the MED17 ECU in the 1.8 just isnt as tweakable as before but with the above mapped figures I think its 'tweakable' enough.

In my country RSR is chipping them sucessfully.

1.4 TSI, 122 Bhp, 200 Nm --> 162 Bhp, 250 Nm (184 lb/ft)

1.8 TSI, 160 Bhp, 250 Nm --> 210 Bhp, 300 Nm (221 lb/ft)

But I really think there's no need for tweaking stock 1.8 TSI, especially on FWD car.
