Don't forget I owned a couple fo Scoobys, they were pretty good in snow and they also used a Torsen centre Diffemoticon-0110-tongueout.gifemoticon-0110-tongueout.gif

I keenly await your "sports diff" attempt B)

Well the S4 can unstuck the rear end if you drive it in the rain, turn of a little bit of the ESP malarkey and the car isn’t yours to begin with. Obviously I wouldn’t know anything about that though <cough> emoticon-0105-wink.gifemoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

Actually with the 40/60 split and the sport diff the car is more RWD than you think, plus I will be able to get up a bit of speed in the snow (snow being anything from your picture to several inches of the stuffemoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif ) for better slideysemoticon-0110-tongueout.gif It aint a 330D, but is a better all round vehicle for my needs....................at least until someone lends me a RWD with winter tyres on it and there is a good covering of snow on the ground with which to test it. I will be waiting for your offer next winter Col (or perhaps in a couple of days time!!!)

There was a autocar vid recently demonstrating "all weather" tyres with bimmers... Here it is

I saw that thanks. But if you could see the hills I need to get up and down in the North East (my parents live near to Consett and Stanley, both prone to a lot of snow and perched on top of hills). A FWS with snow tyres can claw it’s way up those hills, a regular FWD usually can’t. I have never seen a RWD manage the feat. You have to admit, even though winter tyres find the most traction with a moderate degree of slip, the 1 series still looked to be struggling a ittle on a slight incline.

Sooooooooooooo get some winters on yours, find some snow, a hill, drop the top and take me for a spin up it:)

This is link to how the Sports diff works. It’s a torque vectoring system that unlike the BMW system, works under braking too.

It’s typical Audi system. They have thrown a pile of technology at the problem and ended up with something that is nearly as good as the standard BMW for handling :D It does work however and is more subtle than I thought it would be. Ie you don’t suddenly feel it kick in. if you knock the ESP down a level or two you can kick the back end out on an S4 reasonably easily :)

When do you get it please? I may be receiving snow flakes later this week (no joke).

Probably about June. I am hoping there is no snow down here as I have sold my Sedici 4x4…..typical :D

Quattro right in time for the summer; good one! :p

I can see you've talked yourself into it. There'll never be a bad choice between this and the 330d - both are hugely capable. I just feel you get a bit more of a sense of occasion with the Beemer, if that makes sense? The new A4 to me is a bit well.... boring.

You've choice the spec and toys well though and in a decent dark metallic will be very nice indeed.

It isn’t quite the ‘hoonwagen’ the 330D is (have I invented a new word?) but it is certainly as quick as one and cross country possibly even quicker. The sense of occasion is different imho, the cabin being a slightly more special place, but the overall driving feel being slightly inferior.

The suspension is noticeably more comfortable and the grip at least as high. The only area it still feels noticeably inferior is the steering, but there again the 330D doesn’t have the extra gubbins bolted to the front wheels.

4x4 doesn’t just work in snow you knowemoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

Ah well; even in Audi stealth mode, you'd still not make it up here in time for me to get to work! :'(

Still haven’t been told if I got the cheap PCP yet. Until that happens I am a bit nervous. After that I’ll fill her up and head North

Seriously, it has snowed here today, twice!! Not lying though.

And if you ever do head up my way, let me know; you'll be welcome.

Looks like I will miss the worst of all the weather as I am sat at home in Manc. Tragic story about the coach crash. The roads look horrendously slippy with that wet slushy kind of snow.

Oi, I’m not a VAG driver yet! Mind you, if I think the BMW drives a lot better than the A4, then it will give my views a little more credence: D Perhaps I should have gone for the 2.0 Fabia1

Questionable whether you could cope with the power and grip.

Sadly you are probably right. I am not brave or talented enough to tame the beast. I suspect even Lewis Hamilton would quake a little at the thought of driving one

Mil on the other hand... (What happened to Mil)

FWIW what is the fate of your 123d?
