DLR's

Featured Replies

After seeing these pictures I would say that Skoda have got it right in terms of their DRL's. Having them separate to the main headlights is preferable, in my opinion after running a car that has the dipped beam as the DRL,

At some point I would assume that Skoda will devise an LED signature that will be used on all of their range as that seems to be the way forward. In the meantime I like the way they are on the face of the Yeti.

Me too. And as everybody and their uncles are retrofitting LED bars of various and sundry shapes to their cars to get the AUDi or BMW lokalike, it will remain distinguised on the Yeti.

Another thread on DRLs which may be of interest:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/151585-daylight-driving-lights/

Edit addition:

On collectiom of our Yeti the DRL option was NOT switched on :'(

so we had to change option ourselves and it  now works a treat.

As an aside...

whenever I drove our old dark green Rover I always put the sidelights on, even in the sunshine, as the car seemed to "disappear " in to the fields, verges and hedges...NO not literally...and no :giggle: nothing to do with my driving!

and I hate those Audi DRLs- tacky!!

Mr Clarkson thought the Audi LED DRLs looked like a 'council house at Christmas....'

as a point of pernickety-ness - those lights referred to as "side-lights" are in fact "parking lights" and as such to be used when parking.

Why then do we all persist in 1) driving with them on, when we do in fact think of it and 2) not using dipped headlights which not ONLY light our forward way, but help us BE SEEN.

Grrrrrrrrr

Calm Freshacre, calm.... This is a happy place full of happy Yeti lovers....! emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Actually I can't believe this :wonder: but I agree with Jez on this :D ...God forbid  ...a 1st... I do hope it doesn't happen often...

According to the Highway Code:-

"Lighting requirements (113-116)113

You MUST

ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise

use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified

•use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226)

Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise). "

The answer is in the Code. (which stretches back to the steam age and before) You are not required to have your headlights on where there is (good) street lighting, But you need lighting to deliniate the extremeties of the car. Therefore sidelights.

Some of us can remember when dipped headlights meant only the nearside light being dipped and the offside extinguished all together. To dip, the reflector was moved mechanically by a solenoid. (none of these silly two filament bulbs) In practice you could not see a bl***y thing but you were going so slowly it did not matter.

A story:- My grandparents were trying to get home from Manchester in a "pea soup" fog. They were soon lost but they followed a bus which led them into the centre of town. The booked in at the Midland Hotel but, as they clearly had no luggage, eyebrows were raised and they got some very funny looks. (It was the forties after all) Would modern lighting have helped? In those fogs - probably not!

Now would we think that??!!

Driving lights are (in establishment terms) a NEW thing, they have only been going some 20-30 years with Volvo and Saab.

For night driving, I always use dipped headlights and they are left on through town, village, city or whatever. As you say it is a matter of being noticed by others.

Incidentally, how many parked cars do you see, at night, with their sidelights on?

I am happy to offer you a discount on the module of... forum post etiquette :giggle:

but I think  I may need an external tutor for the module on how to respond to a Moderator

Nice to see the sense of humour back :)

Well I've got qualifications in assessing candidates and verifying the assessment process if that's any help :):giggle:

oh to add to my previous post forgot to say I run with the DRL on and the (optional) Auto lights in Auto, only move to manual lights in fog. Do have occasions when the Auto lights are on in broad daylight :wonder:

Same here.

The (auto) headlights come on not only in response to light conditions but the light sensor also detects the sun's angle and turns on the headlights to make you more visible during times when the sun blinds other driver's early morning or sunset (rearview mirror). Have been used to this system for years in my BMW and happy to see it in our Yeti.

...and the lights were often 6v tungsten. These were the days when "Candle Power" meant something!

tom

and no I'm not that old.

Sorry to hijack your thread guys and gals, is it OK to post not a Yetti driver , but do you remember dim dip? Allnew cars registered on an E plate 88? had them fitted and when you switched sidelights on headlights came on half power , a coil behind the headlight "wasted " extra power .I can never understand why they stopped it, i remember thinking sidelights like volvo were good others less so , so we have returned full circle! Like the drls on the Yettie , Classy

Good morning bluvrs2- all welcome here

Feel free to join in wheresoever you can contribute!

I'm trying to think back...I had a Peaugot 205 GTi then and I really can't remember (I need some more blueberry juice...) anything about the lights!!!... apart from the fact that they worked well!! :giggle:

As a point of fact: We had to take both cars out in daylight and Yeti was behind me with the DRLs on... I was not blinded at all and the light was actually a soft yellowy/beige colour so restful to my eyes but still visible and Yeti still looked very nice :) . When Yeti got very close to the little Sirion :S ...at a junction you could see it was just the top 3rd (approx) area of the fog that was lit up and looked quite "dotty" actually not metaphorically!!

We also have the lights on auto when they are needed and I concur they do do some odd things sometimes? but it sounds like they are just being clever and compensating for bright sun etc...in situations us mere humans hadn't even noticed might be a problem B)

Clever little Monster indeed

best wishes

Honest John has an interesting view on DRLs. Have a look at Honest John. Anyone with a Yeti had any problems with other drivers pulling out in front of them?

As requested...a few pics of DRL's

Whilst we are talking number of bulbs and function in the fog light unit. When I turn a tight corner, my cornering headlamps turn but also something in the fog light unit comes on to illuminate the inside path. I have turned my DLRs off so anyone know if it is the fog or DLR that is illuminating, or have I missed counting a bulb?

Hi,

sounds like your describing the corner fog function (std on Elegance); below 40kph turn right for example the right fog will illuminate and vise versa for turning left. Put it into reverse and both front fogs come on.

Regards,

TP

I do like the Yeti in red!!!
