Retrofit halogen headlights

Featured Replies

My 59 Elegance has xenon lights and they have proved to be more trouble than they are worth (£600). Is it possible to retrofit the standard halogens? I suspect this going to be another "not possible, sir".

Can see no reason why not, why would you want to remove the Xenon's though??

Just don't get Skoda to do it!!

Well if you're thinking of it and your car isn't a facelift then I'd be interested in doing a swap as I have halogen lights and would like to fit Xenons.

I'd be happy to discuss an arrangement such as paying for the labour on the swap over if you were interested.

What troubles have you been having with them though?

Hello Gizmo68 and cheezemonkhai

The car is a facelift.

The problem is not with the xenons per se. Rather the problem is because the car doesn't have a maxi dot I can't use the car for euro travel without the hassle of visiting the dealer each trip to change the lights for lhd.

PS after listening to Darling I should be grateful that I can afford to run a car, never mind trips to euroland!

Surely a better option would be to get the maxidot retro-fitted?

The headlights remove in seconds and they can be adjusted straightaway I thought

I thought that when the dealer adjusts them you could just leave them

like that. Does it not just flatten the beam pattern? Or am I missing something?

I think it does yes Len

the adjustment only faltterns the beam pattern, and you can drive around the UK with the headlights like that with no problem. I drove my old octy round the UK with flat beams the whole year round no problem You will need to have the correct beam pattern for the first MOT though, so it will need a trip to the dealer or yourself carrying out the relatively straight forward adjustment then.

Thanks to all.

Well if I can drive around UK with xenons permanently changed for europe then problem solved. Presumably this wont invalidate insurance.

I note mannyo's point about MOT (in 2 years 9 months).

Sweetums, I've been told that maxidot cannot be retrofitted on new Octavia - at least not so far.

Once again thanks to all replies.

PS today saw maxidot on a 58 plate Fabia - a very useful extra and worth the £125.

i will swap you my standard units for your Xeons plus cash your way pm me if interested mate

cheers

Be an interesting look too, FL Octy headlights on a Fabia....

Hmmm...going to the UK once or twice a year I never converted my beam. Never got the impressions that oncoming traffic was disturbed in any way as I can't remember anybody flashing at me. If you ask me - leave it as it is in the UK and drive on the continent with that as well....

Yes, but do you have xenon with AFs II with dynamic angle control

I used to have Xenons on my old RenaultSport Clio.

I took it over to Germany one year for a trip to the 'Ring and had plenty of Continentals flashing me and my comrades for our beam patterns.

We found a simple and cheap solution (as beam adjusting stickers don't work on Xenons) was to park facing a wall (so you could see the beam pattern) and place a small piece of electrical tape over a small part of the headlight so as to block that part of the beam.

Simples :)

Well as someone who lives in Kent i can confirm that they do blind oncoming traffic, just because you have not been flashed doesn't mean they are not affecting others. You can tell when it's a LHD drive car that is blinding you pretty easily.

If you have a facelift then I'm 99% certain that when you adjust them for continental use it changes the angle so that the light pattern kicks up to the right and doesn't just flat beam.

Also if it does just flat beam I wouldn't want to drive round like that permanently. I used to live in Germany and had my lights on flat beam and found if was a bit of a pain as there is less light output. Road signs etc don't vet illuminated.

If they only flat beam then the process will be similar tothe tutorial I did for changing the headlights to continental for the Pre FL MK2 Octavia so have a look at that and see if it can be done on yours
