Tar Spots-i'm fed up with them!

Featured Replies

Hiya guys, just washed and waxed my octy today and found the car completely covered in tar spots. Every time

i wash it i find its covered in them. They're a pain to remove and time-consuming too! I've fitted o.e. mudflaps allround but this hasn't stopped it.

I've tried using h*lf*rds tar spot remover but it aint that good. Has anybody got any good product suggestions to remove them with that won't damage my paintwork?

Your help is appreciated.

Hi

Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover works everytime for me. (I have no connection with the company)

Cheers :)

AutoGlym Intensive tar removal has always worked well for me, it is also handy for removing the silicon surface film on interior trim when you want to stick suction pads or Velcro tabs for accessories.

Cheers for that Jonno, will look at the autoglym.

I use White Spirit

Leave it a few minutes to soften and wipe away..Cheap and simple

Clay bar works really well too !

What ever you use, re-wax the area afterwards.

I used a Meguiars Clay kit on my tar spots and it was fantastic! Have you had a look in the car care section. I'm sure Baker21 and some of the other "detailers" have some tricks and tips! Might be worth posting a message in there too!

The way the roads have broken up, you will always get them. Mine Is covered In them at the moment.

I use AS Tardis. Just spray on & see the tar spots melt ;) If any really stubborn spots remain then a clay bar will remove them. Then re-wash & re-seal.

Little drop of lighter fuel (= petrol I suppose) on a soft cloth works well. Rewax afterwards.

Indeed

Found nothing really better than AG intensive tar remover - but white spirit does work very well too.

Claying will work nicely over large areas, but for intensive hits on single nasty bits, the above 2 work much better imo.

WD40 Works quite well and does no harm to paint work.

Turtle wax do a bug and tar remover in a spray bottle, foams up, leave for ten minutes and wipe/fingernail away.

Got a tip from a Rolls Royce chauffeur many years ago and that was Eucalyptus Oil - lasts ages and it works a treat.

I use AG Tar Remover as well. Does a great job.

I wouldn't recommend using a clay bar to remove a large amount of tar. The clay will soon get overloaded with the stuff.

I always get rid of the majority of tar spots before claying (the clay still finds loads that I missed)

Extreme turtle wax removes it for me not only that you are putting a extra wax protection on the paint at the same time

I've used a lot of clays, my personal favorite being Bilt Hamber Autoclay. Definately better than Meguiar's and you get a lot for your money too!

I've also used AG Tar Remover and personally I don't rate it. I've heard good things about the Tardis though...

Thanks a lot guys for your input on this, i'll take a look at the Tardis solution too.

Cheers.

I recently bought some of this, being a Holts Tar remover user for years, to be honest I found the Holts much better than the Tardis. Hotls has a real lube feeling to it, but it's really hard to get off if you don't wash it immediately off after use.

Another vote for AG.

Octy does seem to pick it up badly around the wheel arches.

I thought the cold weather would have stopped it for a while but I've not noticed any difference from summer.
