Tyres

Featured Replies

Recently we had to change the front tyres on our superb. They were original tyres as supplied by the manufacturer.. Michelins. they had done just over 40,000 mile and still had a couple of thousand miles worth of tread left on them. The reason for the change was because we had noticed that there was a wobble felt on the steering wheel, present at all speeds. Winchester motor company diagnosed it as a trye problem. At the weekend the wife took the car to Micheldever tyres and despite my instruction to have Michelind fitted, she came home with Continental coontisport contact 3 . Anybody have an opinion on these tyres, longevity, performance in dry/wet etc. how do they compare to the Michelin

. Thanks.

Jenks,

I had these on my Nissan Primera Sport+ model (2 litre) as OEM tyres, lasted 50k miles beautiful grip and long lasting. Just as good as the Michelins, if not better in my opinion!

Generally speaking, I'm a Michelin fan - I can't quantify that fact but I just think that its a brand that can be trusted - but take care which model you buy as the Pilot Exaltas are very dangerous in cold/winter weather (they are optimised for summer use and sold for that use) - even my local Michelin place tells me that now - I had to buy in a set of steelies with Alipins fitted to help my wife get to work - mind you this winter was worse than most. So to round up, I'd think that the Conti Sport Contact3 will be safer for staying on the road although not so good for mileage.

I wouldn't want Contis because they will go from good to ditchfinder at 3mm tread remaining. There's a fair amount of discussion on this, but briefly they change to a much harder compount at that depth.

Another Continental fan - very good compromise between grip and wear, with a very accurately made carcass. These tyres usually require very little lead to balance them, which is always a sign of a well made tyre.

I was a Michelin fan until they introduced metric wheel sizes as a form of protectionism. This cost a lot of people needless money - so I've boycotted them ever since. Continental tyres are just as good.

I think that "3mm" goes for any premium tyre which is why Jonny Foreigner tends to dump them when they get near this depth - and they end up being sent over here and going on ebay! (no I have not bought any but I had noticed that curious fact and then discovered why it is). Its just that we have not "got" that fact yet.

Interesting ! My front tyres, original fit Pirelli P6000's, are getting close to replacement at around 13000 miles, which seems a bit early to me.

I was thinking of Continental Sports Contact 3, since they were recommended by " Which ". However the previous posts don't seem so supportive.

What other tyres would be recommended ? Locally, it would seem that the only available Michelins are Pilot Primacy, at a similar price to the Contis.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Personally i wouldn't touch the Conti's EVER again

i used to have a Mondeo ST TDCI and they were the worst tyres i EVER had..!

i am a cabby, and now i use budgets.. (am more into tyre life than corner-a-bility) however Mitchelins are a personal favourite on the Skoda (when trade was better!)

Don't be too upset, I did a pair of Bridgestone E300's in 8k on the front and 20k on the back, I think Jenks must get on the M3, join the M25 and then scoot along the M4 to get 40k out of a pair, the car rolls hard into corners and thats why the tyres don't last long.
