Autocar Hot Hatch Vote

Featured Replies

Sure it is, but the answer has to be the Delta Integrale!

Haha! Not a chance for the Furbie against that competition!

Agreed and the vRS has no hope...

Ben

i see a couple of problems with their list

neither the original Mini Cooper S or the Fiat Abarth 595 had hatchbacks, so calling the survey the best hot hatch is incorrect

my vote would be the original Cooper S

That's the trouble with just having a "hot hatch" competition.

There are other cars that met a lot of the criteria applied to the status of hot hatch (e.g. based on more mainstream models, bigger / more powerful engine, handling biased suspension, stripey seat covers, etc.) except they were saloons or coupes - I'd certainly include fast mk1 & 2 Escorts and in my top three (don't know where) I'd have to include the Mk2 RS1800 Escort or a Mk 1 RS2000.

But, given the list stated, it's difficult to see anything other than a Golf, Peugeot or Renault winning - my choice would be Golf GTi mk2, Peugeot 306GTi then Renault Cli 197 in that order.

So the choices are:

Alfa Romeo Alfasud

Citroen AX GT

Citroen Saxo VTS

Daihatsu Charade GTti

Fiat Abarth 595

Fiat Cinquecento Sporting

Fiat Strada 130TC Abarth

Ford Escort Cosworth

Ford Fiesta XR2

Ford Focus RS (pre-gen)

Honda Civic Type R (pre-gen)

Lancia Delta Integrale

Mini Cooper S (original)

Mini Cooper S (new)

Nissan Almera GTi

Nissan Sunny GTI-R

Peugeot 106 GTi

Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6

Peugeot 306 GTi-6

Renault 5 GT Turbo

Renault Clio 197

Renault Clio 182 Trophy

Renault Clio Williams

Renault Megane R26.R

Seat Leon Cupra R

Skoda Fabia vRS

Toyota Corolla GT

Vauxhall Astra GTE

Volkswagen Golf GTi 8v Mk1

Volkswagen Golf GTi 16v Mk2

Volkswagen Golf GTi 16v Mk5

My choices would be the Mk2 Golf or the 205 GTI. Although the Escort Cossy and the XR2 were pretty good.

Fiat Strada Abart 130TC... easy win but as no one knows them it dont stand a chance. Would show those dire Golfs a clean pair of heels before it rusted away :'(

Trouble was nobody could prove that as they rusted before they got to 60 mph :giggle:
