Which is better or are they the same golf gttdi130 fabia vrs

Featured Replies

I ask this question probably with the risk of never getting a non biased answer. when i was looking at getting a new car i first looked at a gttdi 130 and thought it was good, but is it me or are all golfs over priced the one i test drove 02 plate 70000 miles had air con heated seats and that was about it but they wanted £7000 for it! Also they all look the bloody same. I went with the fabia because it was 54 plate nicer interior better looking 50000 miles for £5990. Some one at work has a 1.6 golf and he swears that i should of gone for the golf, i really think ive made the right choice or have!!!???

I have always had mark 2 and mark 3 golfs before my fabia vrs. I too thought about a gttdi 130 but found that once I was considering one every other car I saw was a mk 4 golf. I went with the fabia mainly as it was less common, better value and imo better looking.

I think you made the right choice ( if yours is red of course! )

I considered the golf gt tdi 130 too. To me, it's essentially the same car, although as others have said, the vrs is a lot less common than a mk 4 golf! The golf's are faaaar too common for my liking and there's not much telling between a basic 1.4 model and the top of the range ones, apart from the badge on the back! That's my opinion anyway! I also find that golf's roll a lot more in the corners! I'm pleased with my Fabia (bought in Sept 09), and did go to see a golf gt tdi 130. It was very nice but was a 51 plate and they wanted 6k for it, where as I got my Fabia for 6.5K with less mileage and 3 years newer!

I think you've made the right decision mate ;-) End of the day, you might get jibes for it being a Skoda, but it's your car, and your money, so I wouldn't worry about that!

Enjoy your vRS ;-)

Of the two cars and assuming they were both in identical condition and with a similar spec, I’d got for the Golf. I owned a mkIV Golf GT TDi and thought it was a beautifully built little thing. But once you take value for money and the fact the Skoda is a lot cheaper I’d say go for the Skoda in the real world.

People said I should have gone for a Golf GT TDI over a Fabia vRS. They reckoned the Fab had a bland interior compared to the Golf. What! over a Mk4 Golf that all look the same? I went for the vRS because it was much cheaper to buy, a lot less to insure the vRS was Group 8 - Golf 12-14 (I think) less common and of what I saw more of the Golfs had far higher mileages which is a good thing because I know the vRS engine can last a good while but people still wanted silly money for them. The only disadvantage is keeping white seats clean but apart from that they are awesome cars and IMO you've made the right decision.

I went and looked at a few golfs too. Same as what everyone else said really, all the golfs look the same, not much bigger inside, and looks just as dull as the fabia. On the outside, its nicer, and that fact that they are just the right point between being rare and being enough of them about to get bit for them sealed it for me.

A little unfair as the Golf is car from the next "size up".

Compare Ibiza/Polo/Fabia or compare Golf/A3?/Leon... You could bung the Octavia in there too...

From what I've readand experienced, the Golf would give a better ride and handling if tweaked. The larger engine bay and a pool of tuning knowledge on both sides of the atlantic makes it easier to tune IMO...

good choice gettin the fabia imo

Its the same engine tho?

I came straight from a Golf TDI 130 2002 to a Fabia VRS 2003. I only changed because the Golf had woeful suspension and needed a few new parts. The Fabia already had been upgraded with new suspension, turbo, wheels and tyres etc, they even had the same extras from the factory, sunroof cruise and xenons. So both were basically the same car although the Golf is a bigger car which seats 5 adults comfortably. Incidently the Golf is lighter by about 60kilos which seemed strange. Both are well made with quality fittings and build. The Golf did suffer from creaks in the interior and the Fabia not a single creak or squeak even though it's up to 95k miles now. You're right Golfs are everywhere and VRS's are quite thin on the ground.

Friends asked me why I changed from a Golf to a Skoda and I just tell them I upgraded!!!!!

So yes mate you made the right choice. This Forum is great too for finding out about upgrading and problems and hopefully saving some of your dosh.

I see way more vRS Fabias than I do GT TDI Golfs and as for the Golfs all looking the same, is that such a bad thing when the mk4 looks pretty good? the fact that you can only get the Fabia vRS in a 5 door also put me off. but to be honest getting hung up about which dirty, smelly, noisy diesel is better/worse...fail

Golf is better!

Widely regarded as one of the best interiors in any car, very well screwed together, a sold car.

mk4 golf is the worst incarnation of an iconic model ever, not fit to wear the badge imho.So glad they went back to buisness as usuall with the mk5/mk6

Maybe as a GTI, yes... I agree. The 150 20vT under powered, and the 2.0 8v shouldn't have had the GTI badge put on it. The 180-spec Anniversary model was good, and the 4Motion and R32 were also good.

But the Mk4 Golf in general was a very good car!

hate em,overwieght lardy pants carp!!!!!

My wife had a gttdi for a year I think and hated it. Came from a Civic Type R, got in lowered on 17s and looked quite nice. It came with the winter pack so had lots of extras but she said it cornered like a boat even after it was lowered. Oh and that was forced on her as the suspension snapped! She loves my Fabia compared to the Golf and said had we got that instead then she probably wouldn't have bought the teg. I am glad we had the golf :giggle: the teg was awesome

Here is a pic of the golf, comfy cars but I prefer my fabia

Interesting question - i've been looking for a Golf GT TDI for the past couple of weeks but am struggling to find one with average miles at a reasonable price. Most are overpriced and have done well over 100k miles. I didn't actually realise you could get a Fabia vRS for around £5k and the more i look into it the more i think a fabia might be the better shout - i can get a similar spec car that's newer and has less miles for the same money, and they're nowhere near as common.

but despite being a size class up they're apparently less heavy than the Fabia vRS, so what does that make the Fabia vRS that you loved so much... :p and the mk5 GT TDI seems to be heavier still, but that's good?

i'm cured of all diesel love now :D my mk2 keeps up with mapped vrs's, and in the twistys it handles just the way i wanted the fabia too, i think cars have got worse not better B)

...and safer / more economical / reliable...

I would say that the Golf is the better car. That is reflected in the prices!

I'd guess ( as I haven't driven/owned one) that the Golf rides and handles better than an un-modified Fabia. My Fabia was certainly woeful if pressing on.

Based on what I've seen online, there seem to be more tuning options on both sides of the Atlantic which tends to make things like intercoolers more cost effective. Plus the engine bay is bigger which should allow fitment of a T25 or T3 exhaust manifold, assuming one can find a VNT turbo to suit.

 Apart from the MKIV R32 ALL MKIII (especially the VR6) and MKIV Golfs are Scheiße - good to see they got back on track with the MKV.
