Things to do on an Easter bank holiday

Featured Replies

Some will know the yellow peril is going back to being a stock motor with the exception of wheels, DV, extra gauges and radio...

Replacement engine and gearbox rebuild complete. Stock suspension all on as is a standard exhaust and cat, so today was the moment to swing the "new" powerplant into place.

Engine bay ready:

Engine and gearbox from the rear. All nice and clean - so nice to work on mechanical not coated in grease and grime:

Ready to go:

Nearly there and ready to winch up to the engine mounts:

Spent the rest of the day connecting up the wiring looms, coolant and various vacuum hoses etc. Drive shafts are one, just need torquing up at both ends.

Was fixing up the aircon hoses at the end of the day before I called it a day. Needs fluids and then ready to go (must remember engine oil too before I turn it over  )

Will it work? Wait 'til next weekend to find out! :S

Good work. Still have fond memories (ok, not fond for you!) of that bonnet underside being caked in engine oil! ;)

Whoa!

Well done Lee nearly done..

Update on progress since a fortnight ago,

All up and running now. Engine running fine (once I'd discovered I needed to connect up the bootlid wiring loom). Bodywork all back on. All I need to do now is roughly the following:

  • Fit rear number plate (but previous fixing screws are corroded solid - soaking with WD40 overnight)
  • Get some road tax
  • Change the insurance now its demodified
  • Charge the aircon system
  • Get suspension aligned
  • Get clutch/brakes bled
  • Check for error codes
  • Install new radio system
  • Change broken dashboard vent and glovebox light
  • Fit orginial gearknob
  • Get rear screen tinted to match side windows
  • Treat to thorough clean and wax
  • Keep a look out for a vRS engine cover to complete the OEM look
  • Give a thorough shake down test
  • Put white Octy up for sale

.

A few issues after getting the engine in and all fluids topped up, like leaks from power steering system and coolant. But all sorted now

From earlier today before fitting bumper shell, and plenum scuttle cover/wipers

Thanks Clive, mostly for the engine from your old car (now RIP :'( ) which lives on in spirit, but equally important for persuading me that doing an engine/gearbox/ suspension swap isn't that big of a deal as it would first seem.

If you do have an OEM engine cover, I would like very much

Today, number plate on (had to cut screws off flush with boot lid), gearknob on (replacement thanks to Mark), also removed rear Skoda badge - not very good condition so need to get a replacement.

Also need to make a shopping list of a few other minor bits and bobs to complete the engine bay (like fuse tray holder that sits on top of battery)

Radio install underway - sorted drivers side speaker wiring, still need to do n/s and put in the wiring for an amp and sub in the boot.

no worries buddy it shows it can be done just wish i was there to help put it back in.... managed to take your old one out and then coudnt get back down sorry buddy

will meet up in a feww weeks to get the engine stand etc etc when your down in feltham buddy

all the best and big big well done buddy

Great work mate looked fantastic

why did you decide to put it back to standard :'( it looks ace the way you had it

Well done that looks great

The only thing I can see that hints to its past life is the enlarged hole in the front panel for IC pipework.

I thought your advert in the for sale section was very honest and deserved to get a sale....its a real pity it did'nt.

thanks, yeah, you're right about enlarged through the slam panel, also though, there's the drillings to take upper strut brace and cut outs in the under side of the bonnet.

All bits that came off have been sold on to give others grin factor.

Car went back to standard so it could become a daily drive once again. Previously it was getting next to no use whatsoever!
