Hi, 16th birthday project - VW polo 9n 2002

Featured Replies

Hi, for my 16th birthday my dad thought it would be a good idea to buy me a car, even though I couldn't drive it yet. we decided on a car that would be a bit of a project and would hopefully be completed for when i begin to learn how to drive.

on this post i will update pics of the car as soon as any major changes have been made. Me and my dad bought the car as a non runner from over 150 miles away we had it transported back to the home. we had mechanics check for the problem with the car that was causing it not to run, it turned out to be a common problem of the timing chain tensioner, which the volkswagen group make a kit for. so we quickly got that fitted and fixed.

here are a few pics of the car as we got it:

here are the wheels that we bought for it ( team dynamics 16" not too big):

we then replaced the genuine headlights for some brand new angel eye ones:

we also purchased a new grille which was more of a mesh and it was also badgless:

cool wish I got a car for my 16th. Also wish I had money at the time to play with it.

Now back in my 16th year old mode. You have decent size boot so use it. 12inch in a big ash ported box tuned nice and low or better yet 2 if they fit :)

Hello and welcome. Nice looking project you have there, and a more modern first car than mine. Look forward to seeing more pictures as you progress. Drive safe (when you start... :giggle: )

Nice looking car for a 16-year old - try to resist the temptation of chavving it up too much ;)

Enjoy the site

Maybe look to see if you have a local IAM or Roadar group. Cracking first car. Be a shame to damage it. Also if you have friends with more powerful cars then it might come in handy as its not all car. Its the numpty behind the wheel :)

welcome to briskoda

i agree the temptation is there, we got a body kit off ebay for £11 wow it was worth ten times that, but we decided against putting it on and opted to colour code the lower bumper (the black bit haha)

wow cool car :)

i started off with a H reg nissan micra haha tinted the windows haha!

does anyone have any ideas for improvements to to the car? just wondering if anybody could think of anything that ive forgotten ? :)

Check the front console bushes. If the normal ones then replace

them with the ones from a seat Ibiza cupra.

Bosch aero wipers, Ibiza rear wiper (think it's areo too), number plate surrounds. Just got a set of eBay which are handy for quickly fitting show plates. Suspension of a gti.

IIRC, that year Polo already has the aero's all round as standard

I wouldn't mess with it too much. I guess you will be insuring this yourself once you are learning in it? / driving it full time therefore insurance companies are going to come down on you like a ton of bricks to any modifications.

However, if you manage to get a policy which allows styling modifications I would say tint the rear half of the car a heavy smoke, and change the aerial for a sharkfin thingy.

I assume you are on the case for wing mirrors? ;)

We have been careful about the modifications weve made, seeing wether they will affect the insurance, such as; we got gti suspension (5mm lower and slightly firmer) rather than coilovers which add a whopping 20% on to the insurance :dull:

the wing mirrors have been replaced  and will son be colour coded, and a shark fin aerial would be nice B) but we purchased a bee sting one off ebay for £2.

weve bought some lexus lights for the rear but decided they look too tacky (chavvy) so were looking at some taillights off the newer polo model, which im sure you will agree are stunning :) pricey though about £70 a pair.

another question, if i were to buy some of the genuine volkswagen polo sideskirts (which arent massive, and look quite neat) do you think they would look ok ?

Welcome to briskie!! That is alot better than my first car!!!

Any pics of the side skirts?

My first car was a 950cc Mk1 Fiesta. I liked it enough to want to buy another now. Not a 950 mind but a Mk1 XR2.

*UPDATE* as of 11/04/2010: we originally had some lexus rear lights fitted to the car, and have now decided that we like the look of the newer shape polo lights (05>), as it is a different shape polo we had to check that they would fit and apparently with a bit of fiddling they will, so we shopped around for them and eventually got the pair from volkswagen themselves. so i will be looking to sell these lexus rearlights, i will post again with a price if anybody would like them. thanks

Below is a picture of the lexus lights, which will soon be for sale (got to remove them from the car).
