Bye Bye Surging

Featured Replies

as some of you know, I have been having some problems when the engine gets warm. The car will not develop consistent boost, it boosts, then drops off, boosts then drops off. At first I thought it wa due to the map, but then remembered that it has got progressively worse over time. About 6-9 months ago it was suspected that this was down to the inlet pipe collapsing. I couldn't find anyone who could supply a replacement at a reasonable price, well not in this country anyway.

Well today, I bit the bullet and on the off chance that it would fit, and with the proviso that it could be returned, I bought a Samco hose set for a Golf Mk IV.

This is what you get in the box:

This is what the engine bay looked like before the hoses went on:

This was the pipe we were worried wouldn't fit, namely the inlet pipe. The bottom one is the OEM one. Absolute nightmare to remove for me as they obviously put the jubilee clip at the bottom on before they put the headlight in! I couldn't be bothered with removing the light so faffed about with a 7mm spanner to undo the clip.

The other visible pipes:

There are 2 others but you can't see them, they are behind the engine and are covered in the heat resistant silver material.

So 1 hour after starting, time for a test drive to make sure they all secure. What do you know, they all are! Oh and the surging has gone! :D

And so have the pictures ;)

edit: oh no, they're not ;)

Yeah, trying out the new webspace that I got given as a supporter. The huge versions are there and the ftp is saying that the little one s are there but for some reason will not display them :(

Didn't think people would appreciate 3 0.5mb files per post on this thread.

Personally I couldn't care less ;), but speaking as someone who has already been 'corrected' I'd say you're right :D

I don't believe it! Bl00dy thing is case sensitive on the extensions, I'd put .jpg it wanted .JPG

I was just about to e-mail you with the solution, including deleting www - but www.briskoda.net and briskoda.net both work. I've had the same problem with using the wrong case. BTW, nice pics. Is this an affordable mod or is it in the realms of intercooler prices? And could you see any obvious problems with the suspect pipe?

Hurrah, I take it the whole kit fitted and there were no size issues anywhere?

Disco, pipes seem to fit give or take a mm here and there and a couple of marginally off angles. There was no need to force anything, so yes it does fit.

Denis, relatively affordable. I got mine at a bargain, knock down price, for cash. Absolute top whack price would be about

but the pipes are also available in red and blue.

Oooooh.... Blue.... :D

Will look nice when you get that blue DV, and blue front strut brace.:D

I don't think blue wheels will go though. I have thought of having a blue tint for the windows though; check out how good the wing mirrors look.

Blue rinse for your hair as well? :D

so these defo fit straight on with no grief - i just order as per golf mark 4?

do i need the turbo hoses and or coolant ?

  • Author

They do a turbo hose kit which is what I got and it seems to fit OK, well I had no problems.

Didn't think there was any problem with the coolant side, but I'll start checking now that you have mentioned it plus its a more messy one to do.

What, if any, advantage do these hoses offer over a new, undamaged set of standard hoses? I can't think of any reason why Paul should be thinking of replacing them on a brand new car ....

At the moment they only do the one kit, which is turbo/boost hoses, but no coolant hoses.

I have persuaded Samco to do us the inlet by itself, but am waiting back for confirmation of the price:)

The improvement you get is that they hold boost better than the standard rubber pipes. Not that important on new cars but after a while they become more supple and become less effective. When tuning and running increased boost the smco parts sre built to withsatnd high levels of boost without distortion etc and help to provide cleaner more consistent boost. Furthermore it seams the inlet pipe on the 1.8T unit is developing a reputation of collapsiing after time especially on tuned cars and is deffo worth replacing.

john, do you know or rate the ABD pipe work for example the Intercooler pipe? Expensive as I recall but reputed to give good subtle increases.

Quite tempted to acquire the samco hose, the APR chip might also go soon ;)

I know of the pipe, but I couldn't give you a recommendation one way or the other. I'm sure however being silicon that it will help ala the Samco item by remaining more rigid under increased boost.

I have just got a price on the Samco one btw
