Snobbery

Featured Replies

As a former BMW 320d owner, I struggled to accept that the vRS was a viable alternative. How wrong was I?. Now my friends are being converted, one ride at a time. Its always the same. They get in, look around and then check the steering wheel for the badge. Whilst the Beemer cost me 22(tax free) I still feel I've got a lot more car for the cash. Now so do my mates. Things I love:

1. The look of people in "executive cars" as I whizz past, and 2. Still getting 42 mpg and getting there earlier, and usually in more comfort.

Anyone else had to put up with similar prejudice from their mates.?

Yes , i had a Lexus before, and they would say , bit of a comedown ,ok so the trim materials inside aren't the same and the paint isn't as good but to drive and practicality this wins hands down, and they could not believe how it drove.Father in law has a fabia now , Vauxhalls all his life ,and his sisters husband wife's cousin ,all after going in mine. It's just Badge Snobbery.

My mates take the **** but after they had a good look at my Octy they said it was just like a Dub or Audi.

My mate's wife wont have one on her drive...Yes she drives a BMW

When I got the car, I drove round (It was dark)

"Ooohh. This is nice...What is it?"

I showed her the badge and her face dropped...."very nice...{cough}..."

The ribbing got so bad from a mate in the pub the other Friday that he was told in no uncertain terms by HIS missus to apologise the next time we met up on the Sunday.

The thing is I've demonstrated to my work collegues the number of things that are identical to my bosses Scirocco and its starting to quieten down. I remember taking the most vocal **** taker for a drive and lets just say it was a "spitited" drive. He got back to the office and spent the rest of the afternoon telling the rest of the blokes what a bloody lunatic I was and then how fast the car was and how well it handled! He's now looking at a Superb..........

The really annoying thing was he approached the MD (who is a right petrolhead - Astons, 6 Series BMW - current car Jag V8) to see if he could have it as a company car and he was tuned down flat.

Unfortunately Skoda got a very very bad name because their cars were crap. Along came VAG and let them raid the parts bin - voila! sucess!. Trouble is Skoda has been just a little too sucessful hence recent reduction in specs and current VW ad "its a Golf but not a Golf". Mark my words, we've seen the best for a while - VW is losing too much money so its cutting the apron strings a little......

The thing is it's going to have to be careful not to devalue the Skoda brand again otherewise we could be back to square one again!

I had a lovely moment the other week when a pair of roofers came up to me - the car was parked outside a job they were one - "mate that sound pretty rorty, whats it like eh"?......"they're bloody nice motors them VRS's ain't they"....."**** me I love that interior"!!........"bet it goes like **** off a shovel eh"?

I smiled and agreed of course emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I'm finding the badge snobbery getting less and less - these days most people seem to know Skoda is part of VAG group and therefore as good in some areas as VW and Audi but cheaper. The last person who I was chatting to about this was an older lady in a driveway when I was turning around after picking someone up, she suddenly noticed I had a Skoda and her exact comment was "Skodas are the same as VW aren't they?" and then she went on about her daughter buying a VW but she was suggesting a Skoda instead to save some money and get almost as good a car. The problem is as public awareness increases and so do sales, the bargain basement prices are going, Skoda don't need to sell their cars cheaply now

When my beauty arrived on the drive, my neighbour said to my wife, "that looks very nice" to which my wife replies "yeah, its bloody fast aswell" neighbour says "but its a Skoda?"...........................

I get exactly the same thing! People with Mercs (from experience, unreliable, overpriced, chintzy, look-at-me-I'm-important taxis!) are the worst, but I just store up all the remarks.

Some people love telling everyone that there is no way they would ever get in a Skoda - that's really funny when they're broken down in the rain in their non-Skoda, and you pull up, roll the window down, chat for a second and drive away! No point in offering a lift, as they would never get in a Skoda :giggle:

Dale

I was at Rainworth Skoda the other morning and there were two women in there speaking about the black FL Octavia vRS that's in there. They were commenting on how good it looked and then one of them said "I'd still take the badge off though wouldn't you?"

Funny old world isn't it?

LOL, it does look nice!! nearly tempted me away from putting "racing blue" on the order form!!

ACSC

I view people who slag off Skodas exactly the same as people who slag off BMWs. Basically ignorant peeps :D

The Skoda logo sucks, even the old British Leyland "fiery argh-sole" was better

The Skoda logo sucks

I disagree. I think it's very "forward the revolution"

My gf was absolutely appalled when I said I was going to get a Skoda...she had all those Skoda jokes of the '80s seared into her memory! And I have to admit, back in my school days I was a bit of a purveyor of Skoda jokes myself (especially when it came to our geography teacher who owned a particularly bad one! )

Now I've got one and she's realised how damn fine it is, she's admitted it's pretty good and actually quite likes it!

And another thing, I think Skoda owe every one of us who drives a Fabia/Octavia vRS "enthusiastically" (but legally) BIG TIME for showing other road users how fast they can be, and changing people's perceptions. They should at the very least be paying us mileage!

"Just like a Golf"

But with £££ im my pocket/

Generally, you'll find less c*nts driving Skodas* ;)

* excluding early Fabia vRS's :giggle:

I came from a 5 series beemer to the vRS - And even whilst looking I walked past it a number of times. It was the girlfriend that convinced me to try it - and I was very surprised! I was a badge snob until the start of the year :)

I went out the other night fishing with an acquaintance who'd never seen my car before. On the drive to the coast he was going on about how he'd only ever buy Beemers and Mercs, now this guy was in his early 20s so couldn't afford a newer Beemer but he was so hell bent on having a BMW or Merc that he runs a clapped out old M-reg 318. He made a few comments on how nice the Skoda interior was and seemed surprised to find it was a turbo and the price I'd paid for it. It turned out he was a copper although not working traffic so although his force use Skodas I don't think he'd ever been in one.

On the way back he was on about "maybe considering a Skoda" :giggle: LOL

Had Skodas for years in my family.

My parents had:

Skoda Favorit, J reg (91)

Skoda Favorit LXie plus M reg (95)

Great cars :D

in 2004 I bought my first Octavia, 2003 2.0 Ambiente in Green.

My dad bought his Mk2 DSG in 2005 (on my recommendation!)

Then I bought 06 one last year, and buying a vRS at the moment...

I love Skodas, even the Mrs looked at a Yeti and said that she liked it (Would love her to get a Skoda in years to come, we shall see...) She wants a Kuga ultimately for when we have kids, but I think I'll try and persuade her to think about the Yeti instead... :D
