Suspension Raise

Featured Replies

Rather than the usual suspension lowering question I want to go the other way to gain more ground clearance on my 4x4 Octavia Estate.

I am looking to gain an inch to two inches of clearance as the roads I have to travel are becoming more rutted and whilst they are a piece of **** in my Land Rovers, the Octavia is beginning to scrape along in some places.

So two thoughts come to mind, I could get new springs made which give the required lift or would it be possible to achieve this using coilovers?

Issues that come to mind are straining the brake hoses but I assume that as with Land Rover lift kits I could just get a set of extended braided hoses made.

The amount of lift should technically not be a problem for the driveshaft angles.

I am also looking to compensate for the lift and increased roll it would induce by having the springs made stiffer and at the same time improve the dampers, again this is leading me towards coilovers.

As I said its not the usual question but someone must know the answer?

Cheers,

Steve

Can you not get towing springs for these that raise the suspension?

sell and buy another landrover

Weitec do liift kits for front and rear, 15mm front 25mm rear , only found German prices but gives an idea weitec lift kits bora 4 motion

Hi Steve, I think your best bet is get a set of coilovers. The colovers will allow you to wind them up to give your height over standard 4x4 level. This also fixes your increased roll issues and handling generally will be tighter.

Using springs assist kits i think tends to made handling worse, as you loose the overal full range of travel on the springs for positive and negative travel.

Pehaps ok for towing something like a caraven.

Thanks, kinda confirms my thinking, will have a look and see whats about and compare the two options, thanks for all the replies.

You may need to look into the likes of Leda as piston lengths in coilovers are generally shorter, not longer which, even with them on their highest setting they're generally 20mm shorter (making the car lower) than a standard damper.

Alternatively, you could look into moving the mounting points of the suspension down the body - in a sort of 'bodylift' stylee? :S

One last option - 22's? :D

Yeah I was thinking that i may need longer travel dampers.

22's Hmmm? Need some serious arch modifications there I think!
