auto lights

Featured Replies

Hi how hard would it be to fit auto head lights to my 2005 2L elegance fsi is has auto wipers

Elegance only had the auto wipers, no auto lights. Auto lights can and has been done, needs a new switch, some additional wiring and a change to the cars coding to say it has auto lights. The auto lights uses the same sensor as the wipers.

where is the best place to get them

Switch, look on ebay they sometimes come up, otherwise main dealer. There is a post on here on how to fit and the wiring required. VCDS can do the coding once all is setup.

thany you for info

Where's Ben (shark_90) when you need him?

Auto lights are just a ploy to wear out our bulbs more quickly, and to confuse other people when they flash on and off in the half-light. Don't waste your money and time!

Do they actually do this?

I've found that there is a delay of several seconds before they switch on or off (eg going into or out of a tunnel), so they never seem to flash because they would be on for a number of seconds before going off again.

They could be a lot worse. A car behind me one evening had lights that came on and off going under each bridge across the motorway, while mine didn't come on at all, and wouldn't because of the delay.

I did find in my last car (a 2005 octavia) that the lights would come on a little early, and sometimes bright sunshine seemed to confuse them.

In my new car (2010) they seem to be better, but perhaps I'll have to wait until we get some sunshine to find out.

sorry but I thought this was funny

It is (funny, and no doubt also a ployemoticon-0100-smile.gif ), but people seriously complain of auto-lights flashing on & off causing near accidents, and I'm not sure that they do, or at least not very quickly.

Hmmmm .... but perhaps it would explain why everyone insists on pulling out just in front of me on the motorways emoticon-0104-surprised.gif

sweet mother of......

if other drivers can't tell the difference between lights coming on (low beam) and being flashed (high beam), god help them. :S

You credit other road users with an intelligence most of them simply don't have.

I don't use my auto lights for the reasons above. I'd like to think I can tell when it's gone dark...

Xenons don't like cycling on and off. And they cost £250 a time to replace at a dealership!

I stand corrected ...I did say it didn't take much to confuse me :D

What's the sensor for on the back of the rear view mirror? I thought that was the daylight sensor for tunnel lights. :S

If it's similar to my Zafira, that sensor is for auto dimming the rear view mirror.

And they last longer in the first place and only cost £45 a bulb if you don't want to have your pants removed at a dealer. I think you'd get more life from turning off the coming home lights rather than auto lights.

Annoying point noted with autolights over the weekend. If you hit heavy fog you cannot turn on the fog lights (ie pull the switch out) without turning the light switch around to the manual setting momentarily turning off the lights in the process. That's simply not clever.
