Isle of Man Skoda Owners

Featured Replies

Hi to one and all

I would really like to get my hands on a Yeti. However there are NO Skoda dealers on the Isle of Man! There is no problem in my ordering a Yeti from the UK and getting it serviced at a local garage, using genuine Skoda parts to keep the warranty valid. But that is the problem.....warranty work.....the nearest dealer is in Liverpool - a 4 hour boat journey and around £200 return trip.....so not really a viable proposition.

I spoke to a local garage this afternoon that had been trying to bring a dealership to the Island but they told me that Skoda had said the Island was too small and would not have enough vehicles to warrant a dealership! Seems a daft statement by Skoda when there are dealers in both Guernsey and Jersey, which are both smaller than the Isle of Man! Also there are a large number of Skodas over here already.....the taxi drivers swear by them but they seem to get around warranty work by paying for any work required and then claiming it as a business expense!

There is a local Volkswagen dealer on the Island who deals in Volkswagen and Seat vehicles. Does anyone have a similar situation and know if Skoda will allow a "parent group" dealer to do any required warranty work under these circumstances?

Also can anyone give me details of what the Road Assistance with Skoda covers [currently a disgruntled Renault owner!].....or give me a contact telephone number? I wondered what they would do if a visitor was on the Island with a Skoda and it broke down.....would they transport it over to Liverpool on the boat, for free, under the assistance terms to the nearest dealer? I know clutching-at-straws, but if you don't ask you don't know!!

Also any Isle of Man Skoda users reading this.....where do you get your warranty work done.

As for dealers giving advice on the vehicle.....I have e-mailed Alex Lawrie in Liverpool TWICE in the last week on their website but still await the courtesy of a reply or telephone call!

Thanks in anticipation of any help on this.

Under EU Regs you do not have to have your car serviced by the same franchise to preserve the warranty, only that the car is serviced to that manufacturer's standards and specification's. and that parts used are to the same standard. Therefore getting it done at a VW/Seat dealers should be perfectly satisfactory.

First talk to the VW dealer then depending on what they say email Skoda UK.

edit: I know the VW dealer I used for 11 years will service other VW Group cars. I assume they would have a link to the online service recording system.

The dealer I bought mine from sells both VW and Skoda, but also services both Audi and Seat. Other than body parts, most repair parts have VW part numbers.

Sorry for reviving this old thread. I rang the VW dealer on island today in regard to servicing and warranty work, and he stated that service work no problem. The warranty work is a no no, they cannot do that on island, as they are not a Skoda dealer, irrespective of being part of the VAG group. HTH

That's true Tony, but the same throughout the UK. We can (and do) service VW Group cars, not a problem, but when it comes to warranty work this does have to be done by the 'brand', and vice versa.

Seems a bit of a PITA that your warranty work will have to be done on the mainland as there is no Skoda dealership on the IOM, I mean, how much does that cost on the ferry to go back and forth (£100 plus)?

Hi Lee thank you for confirming the explanation from the VW dealer on island. Average cost to go across to UK ( note on island it is not referred to as " Mainland") is on average between £250 and £300 for a car and 2 passengers. So you can see from that pricing trips across are very infrequent and because of a "User Ageement" we are restricted to only one Ferry company, so it has a monopoly to and from the Island.

Tony

£300 to go across a bit of water  :o that's madness.

Fingers crossed you'd never need any warranty work done, assessed, order parts and go back again for fitting.

Sorry, mainland was a figure of speech, so are we foreigners then  :giggle:  couldn't resist

Lee - I take it you've never come across the "Isle of Man Steam Packet" company then?  Take the "P" out and substitute "R" and you've got it!  Been a customer/victim many times myself.

Graham - not sure if the EU / manufacturer block agreement applies, as IoM (also Jersey & Guernsey) are technically/legally not part of the EU.  Or so it was explained to me by the locals.  Hence why they are normally listed specifically on your motor insurance as either covered or not.

Might be interesting to ask Mylchreests or someone similar if it applies or not? But I suspect Lee is spot on re service vs. warranty work.

Slightly off-topic, but medical cover for non-locals is also a grey area, subject to a gentlemen's agreement with NHS.  Nobles Hospital treat our trauma victims for free in return for NHS dealing with some of the Island's more complicated medical cases treated in UK. And a deal where a group of NHS A&E trainees get trauma training at Nobles every TT season.

Well explained Flintstone, you are correct in your explanation of the IOM Steampacket. As regards the EU we are not members but have a VAT agreement with the UK, so all monies are shared from a "Common Purse". As regards motors I am not sure but as most new ones are sourced from the UK ( as opposed to the Republic of Ireland) so would imagine the EU regs apply to that area as well.

Hi Manxskoda

Just wondered would it be a viable option to go the other way across to N/Ireland ?

I was horrified by your ferry prices its only costing me £280 (club class) with discounts to go Holyhead -Dublin (return) in June

Has N/Ireland any Decent Skoda dealers within reach of a ferry port ?

Do sympathise with your problem, must put doubts in residents mind about buying Skodas.

Looking on Google, a ferry crossing to N Ireland is longer than to England!!

Not a lot in between the distance from Liverpool or Belfast and I shouldn't think price wise manxskoda would be much better off unless a different ferry line operate?

Just thought it might be worth an inquiry

Graham is correct about the distance, the only problem regarding Belfast to Douglas is it runs only limited times in the summer ( mainly for TT and the Manx GP). Thanks very much for input, at least I know were I stand regarding Warranty work. ( just keep the old fingers crossed!!!!). Two more facts about the Isle of Man- we don't have an Halfords and I personally have not seen a F/L Yeti on Island yet ( Eagle eye)

But if memory serves, Douglas does have a Tesco?  :hi:  Which makes it still the case that Harrogate, HG, is the only postcode area in Britain that doesn't have a Tesco?  (There is planning for one - but they haven't built it yet!).  Haven't seen a FL here yet either......   Are off-topic enough yet? :giggle:

Yes Flintstone, gone way off topic. We do have a Tesco in Douglas ( licence to print money) but none of the other big four, Only opposition is in the form of Shoprite with about six Supermarkets round the rest of the Island.

Tony

Apologies to KennyR for going too far Off topic.

Sorry to pull up this old thread once again, but might be of interest to the Isle of Man Yeti owners. My next door nieghbour has just taken delivery of a new Octavia. Last week he had a problem with the drivers side door handle (interior) , interior parts worked lose and sheared. He got onto Alex Lawrie in Liverpool ( supplying Dealer) and Skoda Head Office and between them worked a deal where the VW dealer on Island did the Warrenty repair. So one wonders if there is a glimmer of light at the end of the Tunnel or was this just a one off.

My nieghbour is very insistant, and would really have stuck out for it being done on Island.

Tony

Thanks for updating on this.  May help someone along the way.
