High pitched hum from Elephant hose..?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Recently (well today), I've noticed a high pitched hum coming from the elephant hose, I believe its loudest on idle. Is this what one would call a boost leak? Also white smoke is coming from the elephant hose too, is this bad? :S

Thanks for your help.

thats not boost leak. that would happen when the turbo is spooling up, on idle its not really doing alot. havnt done the mod so cant help you myself sorry :S

I don't get a high pitched hum, however if you are near the end of the hose, you can hear some engine clatter coming from it (hardly anything though). Mine puffs smoke out like a goodun' sat in traffic, you can see it rising up from the wheel arch.

Mine also smokes heavy when I'm sat in traffic even with a breather filter on the catch can, when stationary there is also a slight smell of what I guess is oily vapour stuff. Definitely no noise though and its been on a year.

You are probably hearing the PCV valve in the rocker cover vibrating. Nothing to worry about, but check the PCV hose for kinks or partial blockage. If it gets blocked the crankcase pressure builds up and blows oil seals. If on the odd chance the PCV valve is shot, you need a new rocker cover.

White smoke = steam. Normal when hot; shows breather is working.

I get a high pitched hum too, never really thought anything of it though. It's not constant though comes and goes as it pleases

Thanks for the reply guys, glad its nothing to worry about. I shall keep an eye out for the partial blocking/kinks

Sorry, but I'm quite new to all this, what's an elephant hose???

Cheers

basically its a length of hose attached to the crankcase breather and hangs down the side of engine...eliminates the hot vapoured air being sucked into the air intake ...
