New 4x4 Estate: 1.6TDI CR vs 1.9TDI PD. Which?

I have never stated nor inferred my abilities or lack of them ;)

All I said was that I do track days and that I am a member of a road safety charity.

I stand by my statement that track and road driving are different.

And anyone else with a bit of sense would concur with you. There aren't many pedestrians, animals, traffic jams , road works, fallen tress, floods etc on a track .And its all one way unless you are banger racing of course.Glad to see you are IAM member!

As an IAM member myself, of course I totally agree. To drive well on the road takes training, practice and a good attitude. To drive a Formula 1 car just needs rich parents. Although I probably shouldn't be saying that since Nigel Mansell became IAM president. :)

I just can't believe the petty arguments and levels of personal slander that get wrote on this forum , a fellow only wanted to k ow what was the better engine buy, 3 pages of mostly rubbish not connected with the initial question.

That's your opinion, which you're entitled to. Mine is that this topic and other topics attract healthy debate which sometimes strays from the original question but which is nonetheless enjoyable.

Not the impression I got when I posted my first thread i.e. potential racist remarks also comment on my level of English and grammar. And just because I expressed an opinion which obviously hit a nerve. Stick to the topic!

And you are entitled to your opinion as well :) .

This is a really interesting thread. There is certainly an issue with the 1.6CR engine/gearbox combination. I think it would be better with a 6 speed box. The gearing is too high in my opinion and the engine is prone to stall no matter how careful you are. For this reason alone I am reluctant to opt for it. Over on the VWAUDI forum a significant majority of posters seem to be against the engine.

Just back from a week away with a Seat Leon 1.6CR as a hire car. I found it impressively smooth and quiet and fine for motorway cruising, but kept stalling it when driving over a pothole strewn track at low speed and had to resort to first gear to get up a short but steep hill until I learnt to floor the accelerator when approaching it. Certainly lacking in torque at low revs compared with what you would expect from a diesel.

Some very interesting coments.

I'm wondering if the 1.6CR with 7 speed DSG will be a better choice than the 5 speed manual? Does anyone have this combo in their Octy?

A review of the Octavia Greenline Estate in this months CSMA magazine says, "Me, I love Skodas; I love the Octavia; I love the Octavia Estate ........ but sadly I don't love the Greenline,. As with most eco varients there's a price to pay and in the Greenline it's excessive turbo lag. The lack of response at low revs is off putting. Pull out of a junction, put your foot down - and almost nothing happens. It's like pressing on a wet sponge".

I had a Citroen Xantia turbo diesel about 15 years ago - I thought that driving it in central London was positively dangerous - for example trying to accelerate quickly into the traffic flow around Hyde Park Corner was horrendous - no low speed pick up (great once it finally got on boost) plus a low first gear which meant having to change up at a much lower speed than would be normal in a petrol engined car. In the right environment the Citroen was great - so probably a case of horses for courses,
