Modifications what to do now?

Featured Replies

Hi all had my vrs remaped to 175bhp raise of torque, cat back put on before hand, plus pd160 and pannel filter put on, have just done the arch mod. Im now looking at what the next step is going to be to improve the perfomance again. New brakes are going to be on the way, and putting the car on a rolling road to see what the car is actually putting out. Do expensive tyres make that much difference to grip? I dont have the cheapest tyres but they arent 70 80 quid each if you know what i mean. Just pointers to the next step would be great, heard that induction kits are pointless so i feel ive come to a dead end. Im off to the forces next year so bigger expensive mods can be made then.

Many thanks.

Exhaust

Weight removal

Bigger turbo with front mount intercooler

Lighter alloy wheels

Suspension, poly bushes, anti roll bar, FMIC, de-cat or sports cat exhaust, egr delete..take your pick.

Already done the exhaust cat back. Im a bit lost with weight removal i love the car with everything there is in it, are there key weight losing parts in the fabia that can be removed? Turbo and intercooler will be a job for when im away on tour. The alloys im trying to find on ebay but cant find much at the mo.

Umm what is fmic?? And egr delete?? im a novice at this kinda stuff!

Front mounted intercooler as the side one is prone to heat soak when mapped and on those rare days when the weather is "hot".

Plenty topics on EGR deletes if you use the search function.

Most of the restriction is in the CAT when it comes to your exhaust.

Weight removal could include removing the rear seats, spare wheel, taking a dump before you go out for a drive etc

The fmic is a Front Mount intercooler - replaces the side mount intercooler colder air = more power

EGR valve is standard on modern turbo diesels to reduce emissions - Removing EGR Valve known as EGR Delete a pipe is used to replace the valve in return offers better pefrormance

If your new to the modifying game ensure you dont get ripped by any shops advising you buy this that and the other. Do your research first before you buy anything & get a professional to fit the parts or else you will face serious problems..

To extract more power from the engine you should get a pefromance clutch & soft tyres to be able to put the power down. Improve the handling with coilovers/ just springs. Keep in mind as soon as you start modifying you face more expense as there is more to go wrong. 170-180bhp is known to be safe on the Fabia VRS anything more you need to start exchanging the parts to match the power.

Finally make sure your insurance covers it all or else you could be in trouble in the unfortunate event of an accident.

nos mmm that would be a sure fired way to make it go faster, for a second, then i would need to buy a new car!!!

Just been looking at tyres does spending 90 quid on a set of tyres really make a massive difference to grip say insted of a set of 50 quid tyres?

NOS doesn't blow up a derv ;)

If you think of your car as having approx 150bhp per ton now.... What would shifting 10kg of weight out do? ;)

I get the idea of less it weighs the faster it goes but i dont know how much weight is need to make a difference?? Would 10k be a large amount of weight to lose from a car?

as i weigh 105k it would be similar to me losing my head.

for normal everyday driving average price tyres are quite sufficient,,,the average motorist wudnt know the difference...

its a bit like wearing a pair of armani jeans and a pair of levi's..one is 3 times the price but put them on a blindfolded person and they wouldnt know the difference...

Rear seats are ~ 35kg possibly more.. defo noticeable. If generally you dont have 5 people in the car and rarely 3, take half out. It takes 5 mins to take out.

FMIC In the for sale section just now, will also have an EGR Delete in there when I get home from down south next week.

You're happy to throw money at a remap, but you don't want to pay for decent tyres.

Does this make sense to anyone?

No what im am saying is that i have a lot of tread left on my tyres, and will not need replacing for a good while and was asking, would the p zeros, eagles, so on so forth make a massive amount of difference to grip. Also am happy to pay out on tyres if they do actually make a difference!

Massive? No, enough difference between on the limit and over the limit into a hedge..? possibly.. can't really put a number on handling imo.. nor can one put a number on how much they push the car..

It's all about the feel, if u don't know its better b safe than sorry, as many advise on here.

Hi James,

sort your handling and brakes before you worry about making it faster.

Tyres are the component that links the two. If your tyres are gash then you could have

the best suspension and brakes in the world but your car still won't handle properly or as well as it could...

Buy as expensive as you can afford but ensure they are well reviewed either on here or elsewhere.

Price compare as you see fit but Camskill are a Falken approved supplier and their Falkens have a price promise.

Falken tyres are well thought of on here and I'm sure many will testify as to their quality.

Apogee swears by ZE912s for example, About £52 quid each plus shipping in std Furby vRS size.

They are all that's keeping your pride and joy off its roof and on the tarmac...

Ya dig?

What tyres don you have on at the moment?

Unless they are useless/dangerous in the wet/dry, as you've got plenty of tread, I would keep them until they wear down. As mentioned above, there are a few budget tyre which are highly rated on here, Falken ZE912s, Hancook V12s, Kumho KU31, and of course Toyo T1-Rs, so you don't need to spend money on Goodyear GSD3s if you don't want. P.S. do a search before asking about tyres.

Have you thought about brakes. Upgrading pad material and/or larger brakes (312mm discs) are a good idea. Having said that, a thread last year discussed that ultimately it is the tyre make the most difference in stopping as it has the only contact with the road.

Took my car into a garage and asked about the tyres they said "top of budget range 50-60 quid" Tyres i was looking at like the uniroyal tyres at 80+. Im not trying to get around the fact if i want to go faster then a good idea is to improve brakes tyres thats why i was asking about is there a difference between a 60 quid tyre and a 90 quid.

Falken and Kumho are good budgets, go for Toyo, Goodyear or Yokohama if you don't mind the wear!

I have Yokohama Parada Spec 2's, great tyre, amazing grip. I don't drive like a kn0b in the wet so all's good!
