Downpipe/de-cat

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am on the verge of changing my downpipe and cat, initially I was looking at the Pipewerx 3" DP and sport cat, however after chatting with another member I am thinking of maybe going for a Blueflame downpipe and de-cat.

As I can see there are pro's and con's, the obvious pro to going the de-cat route would be higher power increases and the system itself is less than half the price of the sport cat equivalent, the con would be having to change back to the OEM system to pass MOT's and the increased noise (please bare in mind that when I added the Evoms intake, swmbo's reaction was "whats that stupid noise?").

The sport cat route also gives good increases in performance and I presume a bit more noise (but not excessive) but there is little change from 500 quid for this item although it should pass an MOT.

My situation is, the car is used daily as the family bus so I really don't want to much extra noise, so the question is has anyone done the de-cat on the 2.0 tfsi engine and what differences were noticed, noise/ performance etc....

Cheers in advance, Lee.

Well i have Timmys old emmisions failed cat and downpipe which i may smash the cels out of and turn into a decat. I also dont know how much noise there will be, Will be hopefully fitting in August so will see then.

I believe you get an earlier spool up and very slight gain over high flow cat.

I heard the same about the spool up, almost instant I think on the K03 turbo, I'm just so undecided, doing a search has proven fruitless!

Speaking to Dan_the_ V8Man who has a decat on his, he said it is quieter than shark_90's full Miltek non resonated exhaust system. I found the milteks that i have been in thus far to be very quiet in comparison to the other options.

hurdy off te GTI forum reckons the decat is only noisy when you bury the throttle and doesnt give any drone at all.

also reference the quicker spool, check out the low down improvments on his ed 30 in the dyno graph below.

The car has just been on Noble's dyno and last time out made 378.6bhp and 353.6lbft before the decat

This time out the car made 383.1 bhp and 358.1lbft

So an increase of a whopping    .....4.5bhp and 4.5lbft

Doesn't seem like a lot for the work done, but the "devil is in the detail" as they say.

Torque is over 340lbft all the way from 2950rpm to 5750rpm

Before torque was over 340lbft at 3400rpm to 5100rpm

Power now hits 200bhp at 2850rpm and before power was 110bhp at the same rpm

The only downside is that I need to revise the fuelling setting as there is now a dip at 5750rpm, recovering at 6250rpm.

Here's the decat v's catted dyno plots

DECATPIC.jpg

it goes to show peak figures dont mean anything. with the decat at 2850rpm he is making 90Hp more, which will equate to a bloody massive difference on the road

Miltek all the way my friend, Best performance gain vrs competitors but built for performance not noise. Had them on every performance car i have ever owned and can't recommend them enough. Need deep pockets but lifetime grantee and no MOT issues.

ok, i hear you, however if you go on the VXR forums and the GTI rums there are alot of guys who have had issues with build quality on the miltek systems. granted they have mostly been fixed under warrantee, but still something you could be doing with out.

and on top of that, they are not proven to have the biggest gains when compared to the rivals.

Blueflame, pipewerx and many others post near identical gains to the miltek with none making better gains than one another in that respect.

this is very apparent on the GTI and SCN forum where most people are leaning towards blueflame now, as not only does the exhaust make the same gains, but alot of them think the sound is better. and they are cheaper.

Get a decat bought pagey and let me know how it sounds

Think I'm either gonna smash out the cels or get the cat chopped out and and replaced by a straight pipe, wouldn't want to disrupt the gas flow.

I really don't want the Beriut bus to be a guinea pig :giggle: but I suppose if I can't get on with it, some kind Briskodian will take off my hands!

That makes it far more tempting, £212 for the pipe, and £50 for the adapter + delivery at £14.99...............I need this modification!! its just the extra noise. :(

Do you realise that you are a dangerous man??

I've just been reading some horror stories about turbos blowing on de-cat cars, something due to the turbo taking extra strain as it spools up sooner, that sounds a bit wrong to me, although I'm no expert, surely back pressure is the turbo's worst enemy?!

back pressure and exhaust gas temps are what you dont want. de-cat will get rid of them. Any issues would very likely be down to poor mapping,

Right, I'm ringing my mechanic to work out the cost of removal - refit for MOT's, then onto Angel, if all goes well, there may be a purchase on the horizon.....................but before that, the only other concern I have is the law, what if I get nailed at a roadside stop?

oh and I found this as well:

Si,

I'm sorry to say that I will be purchasing the Pipewerx down pipe and Sport cat, for several reasons:

1. I can't be arsed with taking the de-cat off for MOT's.

2. I just know the wife will hear it, and my life won't be worth living.

3. I understand that the Blueflame is a good bit of kit, but the Pipewerx is well and truely proven on here.

4. I do have concerns regarding roadside emissions tests, again if the wife gets tugged, she will kick my arse into next week! :ninja:

So, many thanks for all the help, but decision made.

Ha ha looks like I will be going it alone then :S

Sorry mate, if I was a single man and 10 years younger :giggle: good luck on your quest!

By the way, I was talking about the De-cat..............

I know what you mean about the missus. I'm getting mine fitted in august when the missus is away, hopefully the volcano won't stop her going.... :wonder:

I doubt she will notice the extra noise anyway.

I'm thinking about other things at the moment as well, brakes etc, I may just hang on for you to be guinea pig, :giggle::thumbup:

Honestly I thought I'd made my mind up, but a friend of mine has a Fiesta ST and his MOTer has offered to remove his cat by cutting in out and replacing it with a straight pipe, but fixing it with flanges so they can swap the cat back in easliy for the test. I would guess if you knock the ceramic filter out that sits directly after the turbo, it would make a massive difference............... B)

This is definately another option. A friend of mine is currently in stadtlers up north having a flanged decat section fitted to his miltek performance downpipe. I got him to ask them if they coul do the to the standard downpipe and the answer is yes, for only £95. now that is the bargain of the century. heres some ics of what it looks like(on a miltek)

Bloody brilliant, so knock out the pre-cat filter on the std DP, and replace the cat, come MOT time 5 minute job to swap!?

Random question, would the DP/ cat for the vRS fit a Seat Leon Cupra?

Bare in mine that the standard pipe is only 2.5" AFAIK.

Bare in mine that the standard pipe is only 2.5" AFAIK.

wouldnt matter as flow would be so much improved.. std is 2.5" with 2 cats. miltek uses 2.75" with 1 smaller cat, the decat has has no restictive cat so 2.5" will be perfect

Would you do it?

Would you do it?

Well, I'd be tempted :giggle:

Hey Lee, In follow up to the Pipewerx DP and some of the chat about some DPs with sports cats failing emissions, I had mine tested for emissions while in getting a service last week - it passed with plenty of room to spare
