1.4 mpi chipping

Featured Replies

I have read much on this forum about chipping various Skodas..

My question is whether it's possible to chip/re-map a 1.4 MPi Fabia? If so, is it beneficial to do so?

tbh its not wort the money because it will have about 10hp more if that , i gather u can have it done but i wouldnt waste the money

zero point and as its been said before, hardly any increase that you would notice. Only real benifits of remapping/chipping is for turbo'd cars tbh :D

Plus fuel economy is already not that great, a remap will just make it worse. More performance = new car if the 1.4mpi is involved IMO (unless the car has been severely neglected in servicing in which case a new standard air filter, new plugs etc, will make the world of difference.)

there is absolutely no point what so ever getting a N/A car mapped unless it has different profile cam shafts installed. all they will do is advance your ignition timing by about 1.5 degrees. from my past experience i have seen several cars N/A with OEM cams and a generic map make **** on standard power.

focus on breathing mods matey to free up the rev range more before you di anything

Possible YES; I had mine done some years ago by BBR GTI now MoreGo; they are one of the original 'chippers'.

Beneficial; questionable, depends on your reasons. Best to start with a healthy car, recently serviced and with replacement panel air filter, but it wasn't too expensive. It has to be done the Old School way of removing the ECU, opening it up and remapping from there. Power increase is modest at around 8 - 10 bhp but there were greater improvements in torque and elimination of flat spots; I was shown the remapped graphs afterwards. the car was definitely perkier to drive afterwards.

You choose; good luck.

You got 8 to 10 hp from a generic map on a 1.4?

No; it was a 'custom map'. As I suggested the greater benefit was in torque and driveability than in power.

can you remember what cells they altered and what resolution the map maintained through out at all?

how much did they advance your ignition timing by?

can you remember approximately how long it took to map at all?

thanks matey

Sorry; haven't got the foggiest.

how much did they advance your ignition timing by?

Not by much, but just enough (if that makes sense). We wanted to keep it safe to run on 'regular' 95 octane fuel. Ignition could have been advance more if I had been willing to accept the need to use 98/99 octane fuel all the time.

About two and a half hours including a roadtest; this could be less for someone now as they will (probably) have my map saved and ready to load.

erm, right ok then.

  • 2 weeks later...

My induction kit opened up the rev range and helped a little with flat spots but most importantly, It gave me confidence to pull off at roundabouts as much more torque at bottom end.

My opinion would be no.

rarb, upper front strut and weitec 35mm springs is what I went for on my 1.4mpi..

The essence of that was regardless how much money I throw at it for performance its still a 1.4 mpi in the end.. not going to do much in terms of.. anything noticeable..

Instead! make handling better, better entry speed.. better exit speed.. less braking = more speed.. B)

Turbo it!!!

save your money for either a new car or a better investment

I once spent about £4k on a 1.6 escort mk6 and even had it remapped! that cost £1k.

waste of money imo. I got a gain of 12bhp

Thats why I went for universal induction kit, can put on any car I want, so performance gain on skoda will be transferred to next car.

no point remapping as the cost will get you a faster car using yours as a trade in or selling privately

what amount of gain are you getting from the Venom?

Didn't Duggie get his 1.4mpi mapped? Though it may have been a 75bhp 1.4 16v?

Pretty sure he said it changed the character of the car quite a bit.. smoother and more eager?

If your planning on keeping the car then yeah, why not? But if this is a car only for a year or two I just wouldn't bother. Not sure where insurance stands on it either when only minimum power increases are gained.

To put it in perspective, I got my previous 1.2 Corsa Remapped.

Standard power was 73bhp.

By spending £250 on panel filter, straight through exhaust system, vectra C intake (a lot wider than the standard Corsa one, and still looked OEM) & a remap I made 88.5bhp and the drivability was much improved.

Coupled with coilovers, RARB, T1R tyres and front and rear strut braces, it was quite a joy to drive.

Here, I just did a search for mpi remap for you..

for the money that is a good increase. Much better than i had with my escort but that was restricted by the size of the valves.

would you say your vRS is better to drive and has more torque than your previous Corsa?

Yeah I thought it was good value for money too.

lol, bit of a crap comparison comapring a 1.2 petrol corsa to a diesel mapped vrs, torque wise. Yeah, the vRS has nearly 4x the torque now lol.

I'd say the Corsa was more fun to drive though. Nothing like hearing a little poxy engine wining it's face off to get itself moving. Plus, with the Corsa I could hold speed round corners, wheras with the vRS as it stands, it's totally hopeless. Corsa stopped a lot quicker than the vRS too - that's what you get with a stripped out car weighing around 900KG though I suppose as opposed to 1450KG or whatever the vRS is

what amount of gain are you getting from the Venom?

I don't have a clue mate, don't have a rolling road just feels more lively low down, my car will wheel spin now where it wouldn't before(not something I try to do just noticed tyre screech when pulling out from junctions in a hurry). It feels improved up to mid range around 4k I like the venom but suspect even the £10 fleabay cheapy one would give similar gains. I'm using a 90deg bend pipe I found on a kia in a scrappers coming off air intake then the original piece of skoda hose that was there placed on the other side of the filter to get the cold air from the front of car.

I think all the induction kit does is remove the restriction put in by the big airbox and restrictive filter theses silence the engine somewhat so you will have an induction note which is not to everyone's liking but I quite like it.
