Car back from coachworks - not happy

Featured Replies

Short story. Got scratched by lorry, car taken away to be fixed.

Got car back today with plenty of problems it didn't go down with.

Spotted a damaged alloy on the transporter.

Phoned shop and they said get their guy to photograph it and they'll call back to get it fixed.

Got home and had a proper look round (had to pick car up at park and ride due to problems with them delivering).

Spotted scratches to the C pillar, a long way from any damage caused by the accident.

False colour shows it a bit better. It's a lot more obvious in the metal.

Also spotted over spray as dark spots on the rear quarter, again a long way from the damage.

Car was delayed coming back due to unspecified QA fixing. I think they spotted the over spray and have tried to polish it out. The dark spots are flat flush with the paint but very obvious and a lot more of them than the pictures suggest.

Phone insurer to say I'm not happy. They are the customer to a certain extent.

Not sure how to deal with Coachworks. Probably lose the car for another weeks. Are the paint spots repairable? Will they have to respray the whole panel.

There are even a couple of spots they've missed on the opposite side of the car. How picky can I be? I feel like being very pedantic but I'd rather not have to have half the car resprayed Especially judging by the quality so far.

The worst thing is that the actual repaired area is good. Looks like they've just been very slap-dash everywhere else.

i've no idea what the law is etc but ensure you point out all problems in a letter to both the repairer and the insurer. i'd give them another chance to make it perfect. if it's not then i think it would be reasonable to go to the insurer and ask for a different coachworks and maybe some compensation? try and agree any terms with the insurer in advance

Shoddy work after being without the motor for an extended time is just inexcusable!

Did you sign anything when you recieved motor back?

Similar thing happened to me approx 10 years ago as they re-painted roof on Polo(badly)

They didnt remove windscreen or aerial and it was very obvious where they had poorly attempted to polish it out.

In the end they had to start fresh with new windscreen/rubbers/aerial and job was done properly and one happy customer!

I'd be inclined to make your feelings known to all parties asap and maybe think twice about returning it back to same spray shop?

Must be some recomended 1st class spray shops on this forum?

Good luck anyway!

Spotted overspray on the rubbers of the rear door now and scratches where they have used something to peel the rubber back. Also very sharp ragged edges to the paint as it meets the rubber in the same area.I think they'd given up on removing the rubbers and just used some tape.

Will have to try to keep my temper on the phone :swear:

Spoke with the insurers and they said that they should have another go to fix and if I'm still not happy they'll get an engineer to look at it. I don't suppose there is much else I can do.

wonder if i can help i work in a skoda bodyshop Your race blue vrs looks like it needs tlc .from the pictures.Looks like you paintwork needs flating and polishing ,if no joy at the end of it ask your insurance assesor to come have a look at your car with you if you, still not happy with the work ask to take it to a bodyshop of your choice

"flating" ? I don't know that term.

It had just been polished allegedly.

flatting, basically wet and dry it back to flat then spray it again.

They've even got smears of paint on the mirror housing.

I went with a mate to pick up his van from a body shop after he had been rear-ended and there was a bloke with a year old Toyota Celica who was looking around his car and ranting.

I was being nosey and went to have a look and you could see overspray on all the plastic intakes/vents, on the tyres/wheels and even on the glass :o

It was shocking that they thought the customer would not notice when you could see it from 5 feet away.

Be as fussy as you can be mate cos once you've accepted it you've got to live with it.

Hope you get it sorted.

They're not returning calls. Strange that. couldn't get them off the phone when they wanted the courtesy car back.

Phone them this afternoon. Manager seemed frankly brain dead and had absolutely no response to my issues. I read of the list of point and he literally said nothing until I prompted him.

If no joy today, I'll start on the insurance company to see if I can get the remedial work done somewhere else. The insurance has been quite good so far so hopefully they'll keep it up.

It's really annoying because the actual original damage has been repaired perfectly well. It's the sloppiness that has left all the problems. There was no need for it. If they'd taken their time they'd have had a happy customer and less hassle.

Well it's going back in. For 2-3 days. I really don't expect it to come back 100% fixed.

Good Luck!

Be interested to see how it goes

You must allow them to repair the mistake before u can take it anywhere else

You are then entitled to the work be re done elsewhere and the original companies expense. My mates a public liability claims handler so deals with stuff like this all the time. Any help let me know and I'll ask him, he'll be more than happy to advise

Cheers.

I've now notice they've got clear coat all over the window rubbers too. Like they've just painted up to the edge with a brush from B&Q.

Every time I look at it I see something else they've borked.

I'm making up one of those diagrams with the wire outline of a car to mark every fault on it. I don't want them to claim they weren't told about anything. Car will also be photographed before it goes.

Ins company has offered to get an engineer out to look at the car if I'm not happy.

Get the engineer out mate it'll help point out bits you might not even notice

It sounds more to me like they've not taken good enough measures while masking up the car to prevent overspray going anywhere and everywhere.

Keep us updated mate, I hate companies like this. It's hassle like this that sickens me off a car

This stuff drives me to distraction , over the years i have used countless bodyshops to fix damage or mod and paint, from bargain basement painters to the suposed top class and not one of them has ever done the job right first time!!!!

After going through the horrid process of BIG disapointment and return of vehicle so they could put it right not to mention the time lost p***ing about

with courtesy cars etc I did ask the insurance company if we could use a local well respected paint shop as the one they recommended was s**te and

suprisingly they said yes but with the proviso that the people doing it would have to supply there own courtesy car and if one wasnt available then I'd have to

finance one myself. Didnt bother me as car (2 years ago)was promptly delivered to said shop and 5 days later a perfectly presented motor was returned !

Think sometimes it pays to ask the question!emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Not having a courtesy car is a problem. Work is 15 miles away and I can't rely on a rural bus service.

Ins were not forcing their preferred repairer. Esure have been quite good so far.

Would have rather put it somewhere local but having just moved I've no knowledge of anyone good.

Any recommendations for a coachworks in Perth/Dundee?

Putting this down with the car on Monday

Good idea!emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Might be worth making a little video (use your phone etc) and emailing them with a running commentary so they can(may) refer to it.

That way it leaves less to interpretation and you might just get the desired effect!emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Phoned to chase what's happening.

They're respraying the whole side of the car and both front wheels.

I'm not sure this is a good thing.

That's one way of colour coding the wheels emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Seriously though, I hope they do a better job this time round and good luck

Got the car back. Much better job for the most part.

BUT...

They've ripped the rubber around the driver side window so it isn't flush any more and leaves a gap near the mirror mount,

AND

There are black 'bits' in the clearcoat at the front of the driver wing (some 3-4 feet away from the original damage :swear: ),

AND

A strange matt mark on the rear bumper. I suspect someone with clearcoat on a rag or their overalls has touched the car there and not noticed.

I'm going to phone the ins tomorrow (claims closed on a Sunday) and ask that the work be replaced at the local Skoda franchise.

Meanwhile I have some gorgeous black gaffer tape holding the rubber in place to stop water getting in :@

Bejesus you must have patience and resolve!

Hope you find an answer soon!

No bloody choice ;)

No point in ranting and raving at the delivery guy or the Insurance rep it doesn't get you anywhere.

Phoned the Ins this morning, again can't complain about them so far apart from their choice of repairer.

An assessment engineer should be in touch today or tomorrow (I've warned them the car door isn't water tight) and we should be able to come to some arrangement to the reparations.

I would like it to go to the Skoda franchise to get the rubber replaced but they're not a repair centre to get the wing resprayed.
