engine oil low

Featured Replies

bought a brand new superb 1.9 tdi 7 weeks ago.today the engine oil level warning light came on.when i dipped it the oil was at the bottom level on the dipstick.the car has only 6400 miles on it and i drive sensibly.can this be normal or do i nave a potential problem?

that is not right get it back to the dealer asap

This can be quite normal with the pd diesel engines. If I was going on a run where I'd be doing about 500 miles I'd take oil with me. On a journey from N yorks to Paris about 500 miles I had to add half a litre of oil after getting there. That was in a 2.0 pd tdi 170 hp Octy vrs brand new. My cousin has the same engine in his Audi A4 (last model) and the same happens to him, in fact he warned me about it. He had his car back to Audi where they told him it was normal.

You should also be checking your oil on a more regular basis, even more so with this engine.

Had 2 A4 140 tdi's and both used quite a bit of oil when new. It tends to settle down after about 10,000 miles. In fact my last A4 came with a nifty Audi pouch which velcro'd to the inside of the boot and had a litre of oil, card funnell and gloves! Obviously Audi think that oil usage is normal. The pouch has just been transferred to my Superb Estate 170 and I fully expect to have to use it. In short, check it once a week and keep it at the high mark.

Same thing with my Superb 2.0 TDI.

Used about 3/4 litre in first 6K and almost had a heart attack when I found out how much for a one litre bottle of VW 507.00 cost at the dealer. Everyone assures me it is normal consumption.

I've had a succession of VWs with the PD engine and all used oil to a greater or lesser degree, half a litre every 3 - 4000 miles was normal up to around 20K, all used less than a litre between long life changes after about 100K. All have covered well over 100K and none have had any engine troubles. I asked the dealer when I had my first one and they told me that VW say that up to a litre every 2000 miles is acceptable, particularly when new! At that rate it would cost almost as much for oil as diesel.

I've found ASDA sometimes have offers on VW spec' oil, I think my last can of Castrol from there cost around £30 for five litres against £15 a litre or about £55 for five litres from some of the motoring chains.

Hi,

1.9 TDI PD 10 000 Miles cover and does not need to fill up any oil as stick show full ?

It was for me strange no oil requiring as start look to the stick each mount as always has question do i check right So other people check as well and all ok.

Little strange as other in 2000 Miles 0.5 litre oil I know old engines 2.0 TDI they needed to fill up oil regularly as 2000 miles half litre.

Does someone has 1.9 TDI and need regularly to fill up the oil ?

Regards Inco

My 1.9 PD which I fed GM 5/30 hardly used a drop over 10k, probably 1/5th of a litre between changes.

My 2.0 PD has used 1 litre of oil in 2k miles using 507 oil, guess what's going in it when it's time for a new filter?

When I 1st got the 1.9 she ate a litre quite soon after iirc, either age or the GM stopped it happening, I can't say which for sure, I shall report back later once I've Vauxweisered the 2.0 and put a couple of k's on it.

contacted the dealer and they confirmed that this was normal.apparently these engines use almost a litre of oil every 6000 miles when they are new.got a litre of oil in local garage for £7 so not too bad having read about people paying £15 for a litre.dealer said to use 5w30 synthetic oil but most of the motor factors said 5w40 was the recommended type.more confusion.

Lots of confusion I'm afraid....

It's actually 0/30 VW uses, but unless you drive to the North Pole and Sahara a lot 5/30 is fine.

Something I forgot to also add last time, right now I can choke the car behind me with the smoke coming out under welly, my 1.9 still smoked under welly, but not as much as this 2.0 does, I'm thinking the 507 oil is it's own worst enemy myself, my experience of it is, it's expensive, burns like fuel and is dirty, I won't advocate anyone follows me to use the GM oil, but it isn't so much to buy, doesn't burn through, and isn't as dirty out the back.

My Octy 1.9Tdi consumed abount 1 litre of top-up oil every 10,000 miles. By contrast, my Superb 1.9Tdi consumed far less oil from new. The car has now covered 45,000 miles and I've topped up with no more than two litres inbetween the variable services.

If you look on eBay you'll often find 506.01 or the newer 507.00 grades of longlife oil, usually Castroil or Shell. Alternatively, buy in bulk from Opie Oils who have a very wide choice, a second to none reputation and some genuinely attractive offers if you subscribe to their site. I'm currently using Fuchs.

Still on an oil topic, it annnoys me when the main dealer overfills the engine, despite Skoda placing a sticker in the engine bay warning against overfilling to avoid damage to the catalytic converter!

My 170 CR Superb has used a litre over it's first 7000 miles - interesting as i did 20,000 miles in my previous octy VRS which has the same engine in it, before i needed to top it up

Usually the PD engines stop drinking like a fish after the first service and in my experience consume around 1/2 a litre between variable services from then on.

Past about 40-60k miles, the consumption reduces even further.
