Onboard Computer ( MPG )

Featured Replies

Was wondering if anyone else has had issues with how bad the onboard computer is on the VRS?, My oldman borrowed my car this weekend to go to liverpool and then onto glasgow and back. Now he filled the car up 51litres ( brimmed ) and he's managed 630miles on the tank and this was with the computer saying there was 15miles left on the computer. Now when he filled it up the computer #2 range said he had done just over 70mpg, yet if you work out the fuel used and miles driven it only comes too around 55mpg.

How can the computer be this far out? Me thinking this was doing amazing MPG and it turns out it's only doing the norm of some other diesels.

wow fecking hell...70mpg. I have never achieved that. I usually get 450-500 from a full 45litre tank and on a motorway run (115 miles and back again) usually 50-52mpg. town driving, stop starts 39mpg.

yesterday i was really storming it home and got 49.6mpg. my average speed was 58mph and the journey is 90% motorway..m3 and m25 although there's sections where the speed limit is 50mph (this area lasts bout 15minutes ) as there's variable camera's.

i got 75 mpg average from going to potters bar from guildford (around 50 miles) going 50-60 on the motorway the whole time though.. (times are hard money wise!)

computers are always bit unreliable

rember there are different settings on the mpg e.g one trip, overall, look at the handbook and make sure you've got the right one selected.

I regularly get high 50's and 60's in town on the computer, with avg 16-17mph. Today I hit 77.3mpg avg. on a 10min journey in town driving back :D

In reality 60% town 30% A-roads and 10% motorway I get around 200miles for £20 (16-17ltrs?) = 53-56mpg.. on the trip "2" setting (does not reset until you tell it to) is around that mark

Theres also some signatures on here which has this auto mpg calculator.. Thats a little above me atm.. :giggle: will try it out when I have more time.

P.S.! before anyone says " i need to drive my car properly blah blah blah" imo, you cant cut the journey time in half no matter how fast you go in town unless you have flashing blue lights on you. best places are A-roads and motorways (and roundabouts)...

my Fabia tdi (100bhp) reads a bit off too.

Normally the trip computer is maybe 5mpg too little over a full tank, filled brim to brim each time.

I wouldn't worry too much about it :)

I've had a verified at the pump 69 MPG when taking it steady, although I did 40.9 MPG from Durham to Berwick yesterday across some back roads.

From my experience when the trip says 15 miles left there's about 3 litres left in the tank, so if you work out 630 miles on 48 litres it's almost 60 MPG, which is really quite good.

They all over-read, I know when the fuel trip reads empty I can get another 50 miles before filling up

from reading many many threads on the subject on here, personally i think the BLT engine cars do at least 5mpg more than the ASZ engine cars, i also believe the trip computer on the ASZ engine cars to be pretty accurate, my own is very accurate, however the BLT engine cars trip can read massively out

this may not be 100% fact but after reading so much info on here, this is what i conclude

Brun, I think you are spot on with that assessment!

I've got an ASZ and so does my friend and it gives accurate readings.

BLT computers do seem to be a bit over zealous, certainly comparing what versions people have.

right over 840 miles of driving the #2 computer states 69.9 mpg and the #1 from were ever my oldman filled up ( 140 miles from bristol ) states 74.4mpg

now what aload of tosh this is.

I would try this but don't wanna risk any ****e commin through if it does indeed run out of diesel within say 20 miles of it being past empty.

All I know is this car is doing alot better than my other motor lol, lucky to get 15mpg in town in that beast - best ever on a motorway was 30mpg @ around 70mph on cruise

A tank of v-power would sort it out, don't normally let it get that low! Its only if I am nearing home and a shell garage!

My (non-vRS) trip computer read within 1mpg of "reality" (i.e. measured & calculated) when I tested it. I seem to remember reading on here that you can take it to a dealer's and have it "calibrated"..?

I challenged my dealer about this and he says it isn't possible. My trip computer reads between 12-20% out depending how optimistic it is feeling. It does mean that I can claim to get 80mpg on my journey home from work!

Hi,

I can confirm that you can calibrate the fuel computer on a Fabia by the instructions mentioned. If you only have the freeware version of VAGCOM / VCDS then it will not let you alter the value required but there are other free tools that will!

Did this on my Fabia SDI, used to overstate economy by about 9% so knocked 10% off and it is now practically spot on (which means 63MPG measured and 63MPG displayed!! and 775 to a tankful!)

Cheers,

Ben

Definatley going to give this a try tonight. I been trying for ages to make my onboard computer more accurate but thought it was only possible on the Octavia 2 and other VAG cars.

Cheers

My computer just stays at 43.6 / 43.8 on #2 the dealer said to do the reset but this makes no difference regardless of how many times I reset it.
