Which one

Featured Replies

Now we have decided to buy another Fabia we can't decide which model, so we need a bit of advice.

The models we are looking at are the TSI 85 SE and the TDI CR90 SE. I worked out over 10 years that there is only a £21 differance between the two on costs with the milage we do.

So we would like to know the pros and cons of the two we have chosen.

Hi,

yes a difficult one but my choice would be the petrol, purely from the fact that petrol engines tend to be quieter and smoother than diesel and in this case the petrol is also a Turbo, so your still getting a reasonable level of torque.

Oh and the 1.2TSI is a Skoda built engine :)

TP

If there is that little between them, it seems you don't do a lot of mileage. I would choose the petrol engine in that case.

The diesel is the 1.6 CR engine, it's a lot smoother and quieter than the old PD engines, but it will be a bit noisier than the petrol. The upside of the diesel is that it can go further on a tank of fuel, and will be more economical around town. The downside is that they are more expensive to buy, so it takes a lot of miles to make that extra money back.

The new TSI petrol engines are very impressive. Quiet, smooth and have very good power in the low and mid-range, so you don't have to rev them hard. Economy is excellent and they will be more refined than the diesels. Downside is that urban economy won't be as good and if you make use of the power too much, it will drink more than the diesel.

I have the 105bhp TSI. On a trip I am knocking on the door of 50mpg, I'm sure I would get it if I drove purely for economy. With the A/C on yesterday, and being a bit more enthusiastic with the power, it refused to go below 37mpg. Other members here with the 85bhp TSI are reporting close to 55mpg already. The diesel should end up giving 60 - 65mpg.

Otherwise the two engines will be fairly similar in pace. I would get a test drive in both if you can and see which one you like driving the best. Good luck!

I have the 1.2 tsi 85 and i love it. Ive come from a VRS so a fairly quick diesel and i'm sure there isnt as much between the two in terms of performance as the book figures would lead you to believe . The VRS was averaging around 50mpg to 55 and that was with 24k on the clock. The TSI is currently averaging 46mpg with 800 odd miles on the clock. I would echo the fact the petrol is less economical around town. I drive mainly urban roads to work and i get between 35-40 mpg but show it an open road and that figure rises quite quickly to anywhere between 50-65.

Here's Whatcar's verdict on the Audi A1 range (1.2 TSI 85BHP, 1.4TSI 120BHP, 1.6 TDI 105BHP):

"Unless you live on top of a mountain or regularly cover the length and breadth of the country, go for the 1.2 engine. It's the smoothest and quietest of the three, but with a cheeky rasp when you rev it. Around town, it's more than brisk enough in the first three gears."

I have a similar dilema, should I go for the 1.2 TSi DSG or the 1.6 TDI 105?

I do between 25-30k a year so my head says the diesel, but I fancy the DSG gearbox. tis a shame I can't get the diesel with DSG that would solve my problem!

I have had diesels for nearly 20 years and on my type of motoring and style of driving I usually reach and somtimes better the combined fuel figures, so I'm confident I'd get 67 (or more)from the Diesel. The 1.2 TSI shows a combined figure of 53 but I'm not convinced I would manage that. I know the new 1.4 turbo Astra is heavy on fuel (mid 30s) and suspect the 1.2TSi may give me a fright. What about the reliability of the DSG box? By the time the warranty ends, the car will have 75K + on it. I suspect any gear box problem will be costly! What about the clutches in the DSG? any idea how long they last?

Need to make my decision before the end of the month to take advantage of the VAT free offer. I eagerly await you advice and guidance :)

Must admit I was a little surprised to find the "new" 1.2 TSI is only an 8 valve single cam engine, thought all new engines were twin cam 16valvers :S

One further point, anyone know a dealer in the North East with a TSi DSG I could test drive?

Doing that kind of mileage, the diesel is a no-brainer..

The TSI is an 8 valve to reduce internal friction and make the engine less complex (because it doesn't need to be) which is also good for reliability. 8 valve engines are also better for low and mid-range torque. The only reason 16 valve engines were developed was to give a higher headline BHP figure, because they rev higher. But that also tends to make the gutless at lower revs (yes, I'm looking at you Honda). Variable valve timing systems were developed to combat that, which adds to complexity, is another thing to go wrong etc..

The 1.2 TSI has proved that it doesn't have to be that way.

Mike when you think about it the TSI engine has been designed from the outset to be super & or Turbo charged, blown engines do not usually rev highly so an 8v head will suffice. Alos blown engines have much more torque lower down than naturally aspirated engines.

Any way I have made my decision and paid the deposit for a 1.6TDi CR Elegance. I'm sure some time in the future I will wish I'd been able to get the diesel with a DSG box!!

Well we bought our new Fabia. We went for the 1.2 TSI 85 SE 5dr in white, the only extra we bought was the spare wheel and on Tuesday we should know when we will get it.

On the road price £11,375 and got a discount and payed £9,800 so not bad.

Did you get a test drive?

I imagine you will find the TSI-85 a better drive than your old 1.4 16v despite the lower BHP.

No we didn't get to test drive as there wasn't a car avaliable but the new 1.2 TSI is better than our old 1.4 16v so that was enough for me to buy one.

You'll love it. I love my 1.2tsi 85, you'll soon notice that it feels much more powerful than a 85bhp engine. I had mine in white and it looks beautiful when its clean.

I looked at the stats between my old 1.4 16v and the new 1.2 TSI and the TSI is better overall, just as quick off the lights and the same top end.

About 35NM more torque too!

Had a phone call from my dealer saying if i want the white Fabia i will have to wait 12 weeks. But there are some avaliable in 3 weeks but metallic colours and not all the colours, so i chose black as i have always want a black car and an extra cost of £410 . So hope to have my new car in 3 weeks.

Excellent news, will look forward to some pic's

Dealer informed use today of a provisional build of WK34/10 (last week of August) for our TSI (85) Elegance hatch :)

Tomorrow morning the insurance guy's are picking up and taking away our dear old smashed up Fabia, and once they have given it the once over we should get the check to help pay for the new one.

Sad really as it has only go 30,000 miles on the clock and we have had good times with the Fabia and will iss it.
