vrs glove box squeaking

Featured Replies

So this week I bought some fibre washers off eBay. Fitted them to each of the screws thus separating the plastic / metal surface.

Been out today and complete silence, result!

Hope you didn't need to use all 50!

I've been searching for fibre washers in the right size for ages, but had been put off by buying 50+ at a time and not being able to buy them in small packs.

Were these the right size for the screws?

AN update: turns out the part they have removed from my dashboard (and apparently not put back in place) means I have no air con/fan, so I will definitely being going back to get a new one. I had assumed they had just taken out the surface level vent and put it back; but no its something internal which has indeed stopped the squeak/noise.

Hopefully getting the new one fitted won't bring back the annoying noise. Will find out exactly what part it is and post up here. You kinda get used to the noise after a few months though.

jpd1978john .... that's a fantastic looking fix for this damned stupid issue on this otherwise great car!

I'll give that a try. Thanks.

Seen this thread pop up a few times latley so thought Id have a go at getting rid of my dash squeak and...sucsess! I removed the dash side panel and drove around with it off and no squeak! So ive put a few lengths of electricians tape down the part of the panel that I believe was rubbing against the door rubber seal and still no squeak.

Yes, these were the perfect size for the screws and slid inbetween the metal bulk head brackets and plastic dash with ease.

I tried most of the other solutions mentioned in this thread with temporary relief but the squeak quickly returned.

The fibre washers are turning out to be a longer term (hopefully permanent).

50 may be a bit overkill but for the few quid they cost (delivered) it was well worth it for a squeak free car!

OK, I am going to try this. I took the side panel off but still flipping squeaking. Which screws did you add the washers too - just those visible when you take the side panel off ?

Also @silver1011, is the fix still working - the noise has not come back ?

I am sure everyone is waiting on the edge of the seat for an update to my squeaky dash ....

  • Tried the velcro on side panel - squeak went away for a while but came back.
  • Added a red washer (as advised here) to screw (but only the top screw at first) - its the easiest one to change. Squeak went away and came back
  • So attempted to add the a red washer to the bottom screw as well much more awkward to change. Fiddled around, shouted at it, ended up dropping screw into the cavity. Have not bothered to replace the screw so now the plastic trim is held in place my one less screw, the very bottom one is absent.

NO SQUEAK. I repeat NO FLIPPING SQUEAK.

I have had a similar squeak that sounded like it came from the glove box.

It drove me mad so I did some investigating on the car around that area and found it.

In my case it was the top of the dashboard so I unscrewed the bolt (arrowed) a couple of turns and pushed the dashboard - squeak gone.

So, I retightened the bolt and not a squeak out of it since - three weeks of varying temperature and still no squeak, "sort'd".

The problem developed about 2 weeks after I bought my second hand, 2 year old, VRS Octavia. It has been driving me up the wall. It seems the previous owner had the problem previously as there is a selt tapper screw bonding the cylindrical ducting for the heating and the lateral piece with the checker like design on it. If you pinch that with your fingers and wiggle it about the sound is very obviously coming from it.

Its from that exact piece the problem is caused. Im pretty certain if that was removed altogether and replaced with a rubber piece the same shape there would be no creek. In fact there is a lot of plastics throughout the car which dont meet well together. Another is in the central column at around the armrest and hand break. Not near as irritating as the dash creek.

Anyway to get to my point before I started lossening any screws, packing with cardboard and sticking velcro around the place I tried simple WD40 in all areas behind that cover where 2 plastics meet. Its had and instant effect. Now I know eventually it will dry out and probably start again but Im just happy such a simple application has solved it. For now.

I know this an old thread but I've just bought a VRS. There is a chirping noise coming from left side when going over bumps or very quick bursts of acceleration. Is this the noise you are referring to do you think? It's definitely trim, just don't know where. Thought there was a resident budgie. If I'm honest it sounded more like it was coming from around the seatbelt area but it's hard to tell.

If you can get someone else to drive helps locate it. Mine has made a wierd chirping noise twice, both times the rear seat was not engaged properly in the lock. Only made the noise on speed bumps.

I've had the same squeak from the same screw for a couple of months now.

If i push on the screw shown in the pics above with my thumb I get the squeak so it's definitely that on mine,

Cover removed and tried tightening and loosening the screw.

Squeak is less with loose screw! But squeak does return eventually, left cover off for now to prove it's the screw on mine.

It's booked in on Tuesday, but if they struggle looks like a pack of washers is a good idea!

Just to say I have pinpointed my chirp/squeak which I will post here just in case there are fellow sufferers out there. It's coming from the jumbo box hinge. Tried some WD40 to no avail, but when jumbo box is moved fully forward it doesn't do it. As far as I'm concerned that's a result.

Just shows you how hard these things are to pinpoint as I would have sworn it was coming from the pillar on passenger side. What I did was get two passengers in the car, get them to say what direction it was coming from, and then basically plotted an intersection.

The things we do for quiet!! Sure enough when you shoogle the jumbo box from side to side, it makes the exact chirp/squeak I've been hearing.

Thanks for all the replies and PMs offering assistance. A tribute to the community here.

Regards,

Gamm

Dealer fixed the squeak yesterday, "put some lube on it"

See how long before the lube dries out maybe. If squeak returns going down the fibre washer route myself.

PMSL. Reminds me of Mock The Week Too Hot For TV.

Cherie- That's Anal Lube.

I had a squeaking glovebox for over a year and tried silicon grease, bits of felt etc but to no avail.  Finally, I followed silver1011's advice and bought felt washers.  It took 20 minutes to fit them behind 7 screws (in between plastics rubbing on each other). I've not had a squeak since!

I couldn't find the original washers so bought these instead:

I chose Type: Red Fibre Washer 13.2mm O/D X 6.8mm I/D X 1.6mmThk

To make fitting easier, I evosticked them on before refitting the glovebox:

I bought some similar fiber washers and initially thought they would be too hard.

I've put one washer behind the screw on the bottom right in the #33 (above) and no more squeaks. Result!

I bought some similar to Rizmond but in black.

EDIT: I bought these - 50 Red Fibre 1/2"O/D X 11/64"I/D X 1/16"Thk, 50 Black Fibre 1/2"O/D X 3/16"I/D X 1/16""Thk, 50 Red Fibre 5/16"O/D X 13/64"I/D X 0.040"Thk from the same seller.

I have had the same creak mentioned in this thread from the left side of my Octavia dashboard.  The dealer could not eliminate it.  If you look at the last pictures of the dash with the cover removed you will see a small black screw to the right side of the picture which holds the trim to the frame.  Loosen off this screw, ease the plastic away and slightly downwards then tighten the screw.  Doing this separates the two bits of plastic that are rubbing together that line up with the top left corner of the glove box door. I did this and it solved the creak.  I suspect it may be the action of closing the glove box door which forces the two pieces of trim too close together and they stay that way because the screw holds them in place.  When I eased the plastic back I could see clearly the indentation where the screw originally was positioned when the car was assembled.  I'm sure that other loose screws in this area also cause various creaks but this one solved my particular problem straight away with no need for foam or anything else.

Mine doesn't seem to be covered here, I've had a read round as well.

If I put pressure on the glove box lid the noise disappears altogether. I thought it was the catch that keeps the lid closed but the noise is still there with the lid open. Any ideas anyone, it's driving me insane!

To add perspective though, this is one annoying rattle, the RenaultSport Megane I had a few years ago was horrendous for rattles/squeaks/shakes/vibrations etc and new ones generally appeared every day depending on the weather. Awful car!

  • 1 year later...

Having been driven crazy with the LH end of dashboard rattle which Murray Skoda failed to cure and tried all the above solutions and a few of my own I have finally cured it by threading a stout cable tie through the dashboard metalwork and around the plastic frame so that it braces the plastic "webbing" under the end cover; the rattle is no more, touch wood!
