Carbon Fibre PD160 Intake

Featured Replies

Im going to take the plunge and enquire about the above possability. If this can be done, im going to aim to get them to come in cheaper than the standard seat pd160 part.

The item im sure wont follow the exact same profile as the standard item, but will be enlarged, and a direct replacement for pd130 fabia vrs engines.

If this can be done, who would be inetersted?

Hmm.. depending on price, but yeah would be interesting, I'd take one if price was about/cheaper than the extortionate rate of oem one..

How will it be attached it to the car?

I would definatly be interested.

price dependent, i'm interested in this

If the price is OK then yes i'd want one

As above

Wouldn't having it in carbon fibre make it an obvious aftermarket mod....

If Mr Plod were to have a look under the bonnet? :wonder:

Surely plain black plastic would arouse less interest from the law if stopped...

Of course, all you have declared your remaps to your insurers so it shouldn't be an issue ;)

I think it would look cool, however I agree with you, if you open the bonnet it would look "aftermarket", plain black at first glance looks OEM.

What parts would be carbon? I can't see how you could make a flexable pipe in rigid Carbon Fibre.

Intake pipe isn't flexible?

fyi, the way they make CF is much like plastic vacuum moulding, but with greater skill required..

Paint it?

Ha Ha Declared the ones you know of :smirk:

We are talking about the pipe and trumpet that goes from the grill to the air filter, ain't we?

This one.

The ribbed part makes the pipe flexable. BTW That pic shows the difference between the PD130 (left) and the PD160 (right) pipes.

The only rigid pipe I can think of is the boost pipe that goes from the turbo to the intercooler, past the cambelt cover.

Ah yes, my mistake.. my memory is like a goldfish... :wonder:

When this thread started, I had in my mind a pic of a Carbonio air intake for the 2.0 TFSI engines.

Pretty piece of kit - not particularly performance enhancing, but a bit of bling for the engine bay that would look B) and tidy up the bay.

Please make me something like that in CF...

Just take the pipe off and wrap in in 3M DI-NOC Carbon Fiber vinyl. Much cheaper ;)

i would want one if the price is right

Probably cost ya about a fiver for the wrap mate ;)

Don't get much cheaper then that! :)

You're right, the wrap is cheap at around a fiver.

It's just the £90 bit of plastic to wrap that is the pricey part ;)

To answer some of the questions:

Im not sure as of yet how it will be attached to the car. I want to make the item OEM looking that just replaces the original part. The main criteria, is that it comes in less than the Seat part.

The pipe wont be flexable, as to get it done for a reasonable price, it is going to be a crude piece of kit, however hopefully quality looking.

Im going to see a pattern maker, and also a GRP laminating place also, to get the ball rolling.

I doubt very much i can produce anything like the Carbino one mentioned above, but ill keep the forum updated with progress!

I can see it turning out something like this, obviously without the filter on the end. With some attachment to fit to the slam panel one end, and the air box the other.

About time , well done that man , I hope you manage to get it sorted

for the slam panel end.. perhaps the design can be using the existing screws and holes there to secure the trumpet or whatever its called. I think both end will require some sort of rubber/silicon somewhere to have an 'airtight' seal.

Update : 23.06.10

Visited the pattern/mould makers and the idea is more than faesable. They have a good relationship with a guy who specialises in carbon fibre production also, who is also local to me . I am old friends with the pattern maker, who tell me they will work closely with the carbon fibre company!

They tell from (looking at photos of the pd160 intake) that it is possable to as good as recreate the whole item. However, the flexable part in the middle of the item would not be included in the design.

Now, i need to go back with a pd160 intake unit for them to get the ball rolling. Does anyone have one they could lend untill a mould can be taken.

If anyone comes foreward wanting to supply one, ill look after you by providing you with one of the first new carbon fibre intakes. If the idea falls through, ill send it back to you. If anyone does, please get back to me before Friday, otherwise ill have to order one from Seat.

Keep your eyes peeled on this, as this is most likely a goer!!

Regards

Dan
