Intermittent EGR fault

Featured Replies

I had the engine light come on, so I got it scanned and it came up with an intermittent EGR fault, it was cleared but came back on in a few miles.

The car is on 86k, is it worth cleaning the EGR valve, or is a new one the answer? How much do they cost for an ASZ vrs?

JabbaSport do an EGR delete kit for the vRS. £50 fitted I believe. Sorted. ;)

If its that cheap I am tempted, but dont you need to light to be "mapped out" too? does that increase the cost?

Included in the fitting charge.

Wow ! That's cheap. You sure that's not refurbished or recovered part (Scrappies) ?

I'm geting the following:-

Bit of a price variation there. Might be worth some research.

On the cheapest option, at a main dealers, that would give with an hour's worth of labour, other bits and VAT about £200 all-in

I've got a petrol DOHC 1.4 with the same problem. This initially exhibited as an occasional monumental engine stutter - Rev counter would go back to zero so rapidily, only for a couple of seconds, that it would almost bounce off the stop. Initially, i thought it was a dodgy electrical connection. It usually only occurred when the engine was at low revs and under slight load. ( I understand that the EGR valve only operates up to 2000 RPM on the petrol engine). After this had been going on, on and off for a couple of years I took it into the garage and was told that they cleaned the various orifices. Its much better now. There is an occasional very mild stutter below 2000 (RPM) but the dealers did say I would eventually need a replacement EGR.

In my case, I imagine that engine oil consumption, which has now reached a litre every 1000 miles (It started to suck up oil from 27,000 onwards, now at 46,000) contributed to the blockage - dealer says compression on the engine is OK. Huh ! With that oil consumption, I can't believe the catalytic converter hasn't packed up. - the operating specs for my engine say that a new engine should achieve 15 atmosphere's of pressure on cylinder compression but that it can wear out to 7 atmospheres with a 3 atmosphere variation between cylinders and still be within limits. That's the specification equivalent of a barn door - wide, wide, wide !

I don't really know what's the cause and wonder whether this is just another example of poor quality/low spec items being bought by VW from subbies - a bit like that infernal and infamous temperature flap valve motor on the aircon.

It makes me chuckle though, that these engines are sold as being more eco freindly because of the improved MPG, but in reality they are worse than the previous generation of engines due to the amount of oil they chuck out. Engine oil contains more noxious materials i.e. heavy metals than ordinary exhaust gases. And nobody notices or says a word. Bhopal on wheels.

It's not cheap at all really. It's a plate and a couple of bolts and a thing that blocks off the vacuum and then a couple of minutes reprogramming the ECU. All it does is block off the EGR valve orifice plate so it never opens and even if it does nothing goes through.

Sorry ! That's me mis-reading the original post and thinking the guy was after a replacement EGR.

I think you read the original post correctly, I probably just confused the issue by introducing the option of an EGR delete rather than a replacement or bypass. Sorry about that!
