Cambelt cost

Hi guys I'm curious, I've just been quoted £505 for a cambelt change on my Octy1 Tdi which left me speechless! It was at a main dealer in Surrey admittedly but nevertheless seemed like a lot. Anybody know if that's the norm 4 a main dealer & for that matter any recommendations on an indy dealer in Surrey? Frankly I'd rather use a main dealer but am definitely open to suggestions now that I've regained the power of speech. :~}

Awesome GTI advertise it for about £350, a local specialist quoted me £250. Personally I would rather use a specialist than a main dealer as you know who will be doing the work.

Thanx Ollie, I've heard good things about Awesome B4, just wish they were closer as it's a bit of a trek from the South. I was just sounding out the forum for what other people have paid 4 the cambelt & if there were any indy's in the South East worth considering? Also, should the water pump be changed at the same time?

My son was quoted £385.65 for a cambelt, water pump and auxiliary belt change on a Bora PD150 by an independent VW specialist in Bedford.

About 3 weeks ago now I had my cambelt, water pump and auxiliary belt change done on my Octy MK1 vRS. Skoda Oxford quoted £419, VW dealer local to me matched it. An independant in Oxford quoted about £400.

I got the VW garage to do it as I could leave the car there and walk home.

Had my 130BHP octy 1 , cambelt , water pump and Aux belt done by an indi in exeter for £350 all perfect service , find a decent indy , near you and get a quote

Put aside about another £80 for the cambelt tensioner. These dont normally get changed I dont think but need to be checked. Mine had failed when I got my cambelt changed on Tuesday (2003, 56k) which would of resulted in the cambelt jumping off so could have been a £2k bill instead.

You may as well change the water pump at the same time, they are not that expensive and it makes more sense then having the same labour charge if it goes.

When I did my Octy vRS the genuine parts alone came to £206.

That was for cam belt kit, tensioner/damper, water pump, G12 anti freeze and 7 x engine mount bolts.

And I've just ordered genuine parts to do my mothers Fabia vRS and it came to £216.

For that you get a cam belt kit, water pump, G12 anti freeze, aux drive belt, 3 x engine mounting bolts and a crankshaft locking tool (I'm going to make the tensioner pulley and camshaft locking tool to save a bit of cash).

So its an expensive job even if you DIY......just have to hope Skoda dont reduce the replacement interval any further

Thats a good price considering the retail price of the parts to DIY

Suprised to see they did'nt change the 3 engine mounting stretch bolts though !!!

But if the engine has'nt fallen out yet then chances are you will prob get away with it

why are the engine mounting bolts needed? also what is their part number and approx cost for an octy 1 RS?
