Fixed Vs Variable Servicing

Featured Replies

Skoda Octavia Elegance Hatchback 1.9 PDI 105 H.P., registered 2007 ('57 plate), annual milage 20,000.

Hi,

This is my second Octavia and up until now both have been on variable servicing. The service interval has been regularly coming up at about 18,500 miles. Ive now got 55,700 miles on the clock and the 'service light' tells me that a service is due in 300 miles.

I called in at the local Skoda dealer's (which has recently changed ownership) to book the car in for a service and the guy behind the desk seemed to be tring to get me to switch to fixed (10,000 mile) servicing. He went into a long diatribe about costs and seemed to be pushing a fixed servicing deal in which you paid up front for two services at a reduced rate and also got an MOT at a reduced rate (£29.99 I think).

Has any one had any similar expieriences or does anyone have any thoughts or comments.

Best Regards

Graham

I just changed back to fixed from variable as I like to think that the oil will be changed more frequently later on in the cars life and expendable items might be spotted on their way out before they become expensive items.

Mine was done today and seriously it feels completely different.

This is a tricky one.

My mk1 octavia had been on variable prior to be buying it and had covered approx 80,000miles in 3years on variable and ran very well but as I intended to modify it I changed the servicing to every 10,000miles even though it meant it would get serviced twice a year and as far as I'm aware the car is still going well at over 146,000miles

My current m2 octavia was on variable until I bought it and during its service yesterday it was apparent the lack of TLC the car has had, the Fuel filter has never been changed and the wrong oil was used in the last service, I was dis-appointed to see this on a car that has had 2 variable services by Skoda dealers. Since changing the Fuel Filter and the Oil Change the car runs so much smoother/quieter and much more responsive than before, it's no wonder the turbo had to be replaced 2 months ago.

With my experiences, I am going to stay on Fixed 10,000mile servicing despite covering more than 20,000miles per year and will also be giving my car an interim oil change around 5,000miles due to towing, just to keep everything in tip top condition.

Hello again,

Another question on the same topic - am I correct in assuming that, when a car is on variable servicing, the maximum service interval is fixed at 30,000 km (18, 640 miles) and - no mater how the car is driven - this interval will not be exceeded?

Just had mine seviced last week, first one from new on variable. Got the dashes for a while and was getting a little concerned that i have done about 400mile since the day of the service with no readings. Noted yesterday it now reads 18,800miles or 739days to the next service.

Mine was the same, took about 500 miles or so to register . Now reads spanner 16,100 miles- but no days. How do you show that?

Just noticed in the handbook it says

'Resetting Service Interval Display

It is only possible to reset the Service Interval Display, if a service message or at least

a pre-warning is shown on the display of the instrument cluster.'

However, I'd the first variable service done early, with no warning displayed, at around 17,000 miles and one year. Wonder if indicator is now confused or been set for an annual service ?

I believe the number of days only shows up if you have maxidot and go to the service info menu. If you don't have maxidot I think you only get the number of miles (or does it alternate between the two if you leave the service indicator on long enough?)

The fact that you have 16000 miles or so shos you are on variable as the fixed service is about 10000 miles....
