What to use to grease engine mount

What grease should be used to 'lubricate' the nearside top engine mount (the one under the battery) and hopefully stop the infernal clunking that it makes.

I know there was a TSB released by Skoda on this 'fix' but I can't seem to find it on the Net anywhere.

Is the rubber part of the mount real rubber or synthetic and does this make a difference to grease used?

It is rubber.

You should use (imo) white grease with PTFE or a ptfe spray which is kind to rubber.

Do not use copper grease

Don't use vaseline. Don't use copper grease.

As others say, use a silicone based grease. I wouldn't use the spray on a mount, use the tube stuff (much thicker). You can get a tube from maplins, think this is it but the picture won't load:

vaseline does protect rubber and does lubricate even the tightest of parts :giggle:

But white ptfe would be better as it has better lubricating properties.

I've read mixed things about vaseline really, some say its good for rubber others have said its bad.

Silicone grease is awesome stuff to have around the house anyway, hardly has any smell and does half the jobs wd40 can do but without stinking it out for days :rofl:

Also makes a good insulator for electrical connections, helped me reduce some crackling in dodgy headphone ports :thumbup:

+1 for silicone grease !

but vaseline is also a good electical insulator !! we use it on electric trains (i fix them as a job, i am in no way or form a train spotter) insulate battery terminals etc etc

looks a bit weird when someone opens your toolbox and see's a tub of vaseline in the top draw though !

Isn't there an issue with rubber and grease? I would have thought Vaseline being petroleum jelly would make rubber swell at the very least.

I have some PTFE grease which is a spray but sets up as grease after a while. It says is ok on rubber.

Isn't the PAS pump and Spray bottle under the battery? Do you mean the mount that has 3 bolts on the shell side and one bolt on the engine side and is kind of on the back side of the wheel arch and is easy to see with all parts in place?

I'm trying to work out what my current "clank" over bumpy ground is.. pretty sure it's not the console bushes as had cupra less than 10k ago.. as well as new ARB bushes.. so I was thinking top mount.. but actually, this sounds like a more likely cause.. it's quite a metallic sounding clonk.

Its actually more to the left of the air box, but lower iirc. I don't remember being able to see it without removing the battery tray, but I might be wrong. You surely wouldn't be able to lube it without removing parts though.

I have finally fixed the clonk/clunk/bonk sound that has plagued my low mileage 07 vRS for many, many months.

Some history, the Stealer's service department greased the nearside gearbox/engine top mount a couple of times as per the TBS and yes the sound disappeared for a a few weeks but then gradually returned. That was all they could offer whilst the car was under warranty - SHAME ON THEM!

After wrapping a towel around my head and meditating on the matter and also reading about so many others seemingly being unable to find a solution to this not uncommon problem, I bit the bullet and had the mount changed (revised part number 6Q0199555BA for the BLT engine) at an all in cost of £130 fitted and finally I have tranquillity. So there is ho need to spend fortunes changing consol bushes, dog bones, strut mount, ARB bushes, drop links etc. just try renewing that humble engine mount.

I hope this helps others who are plagued by this design fault - really Skoda you should know how to build an engine mount by now.
