TURBO FAILIURE URGENT HELP NEEDED

Featured Replies

Evening All,

About half a mile from home tonight I accelerated out of a junction and heard a loud pop/bang followed by white smoke plumes from the exhaust. I tried to limp it home but the oil light came on along with a clattering noise. I immediately turned the engine off at this and pushed the car the rest of the way. The back end is caked with what I presume is oil.

I'd like your help and advice please. I am no mechanic or expert but think the turbo has gone completely. What I'm concerned about is any further potential damage that could have been caused. Will it be a case of replacing the turbo and an oil change? Is it that simple?

My plan is to get an Allard VT2 unit or Turbo Dynamics Hybrid unit, get a Forge FMIC and Blueflame system and an appropriate remap. However my main concern is getting the car roadworthy and ensuring it will be in perfect working order. I'm in Sheffield so any places you know of would be helpful, especially if they can collect the vehicle.

Please offer any advice as to what I'm going to have to do, and forgive me for not using the search button, in a bit of a pickle here and just need some help.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news mate but that doesn't sound good.

Is there an oil leak from the back of the block?

Check the engine bay and If it looks covered in oil like so then i'd fear the worst.

Cheers for your reply Jonny5ive. Unfortunately that does resemble my engine bay. So you had the same thing happen? What needed doing in your case? Which particular turbo did you upgrade to? Any help/tips/advice/prices to expect would be appreciated.

It's all in the thread mate, but in a nutshell, my car had done nearly 140k miles (110k re-mapped to 175bhp) one the standard original clutch and turbo, so good mileage for the old unit.

I discussed a number of options with the guys at TRD and also discussed the age and mileage of the car and turbo upgrade.

I was already running a decat custom/magnex exhaust so I went for:

  • Garrett Stage 1 Hybrid Turbo
  • Sachs clutch kit retaining DMF for driveability
  • EGR delete welded too SAMCO boost hose
  • Re-map to suit

Including a check of the camshaft and all labour i had £40 change from £2.5k :S

Thanks for the info. £2.5k, ouch. I'm expecting £2k ish as I've already got the clutch kit fitted. I'm really hoping a new turbo and oil change will make the car run properly, then following that I can sort the FMIC and exhaust then get it mapped.

Anyone know if this will be the case?

Shark Performance aren't too far from you, they're in Mansfield and although they usually just do electrical stuff I know that they do have an arrangement with some people who do good work mechanically as well. Definitely worth a chat as Ben Wardle definitely knows his way around a Fabia engine bay.

oh no... you tried to limp home :o

hope its okay after new turbo and ic

The limping home bit is the worst part. Definately the turbo that's gone.

I hope limping it for a bit has not dragged any turbo internal parts through to the engine. :( Hoping that the clattering noise isn't bits of compressor grinding away on the pistons. When mine blew on the ring I knew right away what is was (Was perhaps a little more clear-cut for me) and I had the engine off before I'd even come to a stop (I had been doing 110mph so needed power assisted brakes to stop for most of it, so left engine running for a few seconds....)

Oh dear. The more I hear the more worried I'm getting. So is there anything in particular I need to alert whoever ends up looking at it to? Something specific to look for? I regret the limping home attempt but thought as it was so close to home it would have been ok, and as I said I turned it off as soon as I heard the noise so hopefully no extra damage will have been done.

Thanks for your replies guys, I'll ring Ben @ Shark in the morning. I might try and source a VT2 Turbo and FMIC too. I'm getting a sinking feeling I won't be driving her for some time and the whole process is going to be emotional and expensive.

Absolutely gutted.

Feel for you, really do.

Hope you get some good news on it...

I don't mean to hijack this thread - but I guess I am a little, but please forgive me! From reading this I'm gathering that if you hear a noise like your turbo has gone, then the engine should be turned off as quickly as possible? Are there any other instances where this would be the case?

Sorry, I'm not mechanical minded at all!

Best of luck to the OP with sorting his car out though

The car is now with Ben @ Shark Performance who is going to carry out a turbo post mortem and get back to me with the results and discuss a few options. So thanks for your comments guys, particularly wja96 for suggesting Shark. I'm hoping to have the car back in around 3 weeks. I'll update this thread as it progresses.

Seems to be a few Turbos popping recently. Is this due to the warmish weather?

No, just a gathering of Sods Law for the unfortunate.

No, just a gathering of Sods Law for the unfortunate.

Sods law,

If I find this Mr Sod I will give him the bill for my turbo blowing. lol....

yes your right though. it is a mechanical item and there is obviously an element of luck with them. mine had only done 39000 miles and had been warmed up and cooled down. run in lightly for the first 1000 miles from new as requested, but still blew. oh well sods law.

just costs a pretty penny to sort though.

will be well happy once mine is back from JABBA with a new Garret, clean inlet pipesowrk, and full exhaust fitted. oh plus remap. will be a totally different car. thats for sure.

back to square one with the running in again though as can't afford to blow another one....

enjoy and hope all these blown turbo's go away and never return.

laters,
