Is there a program...

...Which alloys you to link to a url which is actually on your computer so that when someone clicks the link they can download the file without their being a security risk (similar to P2P sharing but you could post the link on a forum)?

Surely if you could turn your computer into a server and you allow one port access (keeping ZoneAlarm or similar on), it is possible, especially when ADSL uses static IP addresses?

Cheers, Chris.

It's called FTP ;)

You setup an FTP server on your pc (not too complicated) then store your files within a directory you allow access to on your pc.

Give the address/login to whoever and they download it.

Ermmm, not too sure how to do it though :)

On the point of P2P Is there a good one without Spyware etc?

I think Limewire is spyware free

If you have Win XP Pro, you can install it as part of the IIS (Internet Information Services) component. Control Panel - Add Remove Programs / Windows Components / IIS / Details / FTP.

Once installed IIRC there is a wizard to set-up an FTP folder, can be password protected etc and you will need to open Port 21 on your router and zonealarm.

Moving to the Toy Room chaps.....

Sorry Huck!

I set it up via WS_FTP Server 5.0 and it works perfect. I just realised my IP is only static for one session, meaning that when I disconnect and reconnect my IP is different (dyamic IP like on a modem I think?) which is a pi$$er if I want to link to a file unless I leave my PC on all the time so that it stays the same.

Any programs which can link to dynamic IP's?

Sorry Huck!

No worries! :)

If you are using broadband do you not leave your modem on? If so you should keep the same IP address, alternativly have a look at www.dyndns.org

The other option is to find someone willing to sell you some proper webhosting dirt cheap... ;)
