Whats your doing to the gallon

Featured Replies

Back on topic: proud to say that I manage to get around 60 mpg on my Fabia Greenline estate (1.4TDI/DPF) averaged over the last 2000miles. Mostly long-distance, with few hops around town.

In town my driving style might make wrinklies look like Hamilton, but out of town I drive near/at the speed limit if reasonably possible.

Sometimes she gets (supposedly) high-quality stuff, but mostly whatever is available, including supermarket slosh.

Considering my 2 tonne 98 Alhambra 1.9tdi has been averaging 52 -57mpg over many thousands of miles and several years, I dont find any of these Greenline figures inspiring. In fact I would say the latest generations of engines in the Skoda range are downright awful when it comes to fuel consumption and nowhere near the fictional figures claimed by the manufacturers. I particularly note people reporting Fabia Greenline II mpg no more than 55mpg - so much for the 80 - 90+ mpg claimed!

It depends how people are driving the cars, particularly the Greenlines.

To get top economy, you have to drive economically, which demands a certain technique. You can't hammer it round and expect 80mpg, which is what people seem to expect. That isn't going to happen.

The TSI's can get good economy, IF you drive economically. Give them some welly and they will p*ss the fuel away like any other petrol engine of comparable power.

As for the 205 GT being as economical, it probably was, but remember that the 205 is a bit smaller and considerably lighter. That helps fuel economy a lot. On the other hand, crash one and it will fold up like a crisp packet, where the Fabia will not.

The new CR diesels may appear low mpg at the moment but things really improve a lot when they get run in. I was dissapointed with my mpg figures at first but after 13000 miles this improved by over 6 mpg. I say its far too early to be judging the new diesels. Let them get run in and then we can see a realistic figure

Nobody could ever hope to reach book figures. Those are artificial guidelines based on rolling roads which conform to European specifications. They do allow you to compare between cars with figures based on a standardised format that all manufacturers must use. This goes for all manufacturers. Just take a look at other brands figures, they are just as fictional compared to real world motoring. A rule of thumb I use is that the best you can hope for is the combined figure.

I have a Greenline '1'. So far 13000 miles. Driving normally I get around 67 mpg. Driving economically and taking my time I get 72 mpg. Thats calculated, I dont trust the onboard computer as it overreads by about 5 mpg. I do 600 miles a week and have calculated the mpg for every tank of fuel used. I never expected to reach the EU approved figures for mpg. I expected around 70 mpg and can say with certainty that I reach that.

I will add that I dont dawdle, bimble or potter. I go with the flow and can often be found in the fast lane same as everyone else.

What these Fabias need is time and mileage........far too early to condemn them as inefficient after such a short period.

As a Greenline II owner, I am happy with my MPG.

The car has not even done 800miles and if I drive to work ( in Town) in 3rd at just under 30 the computer records 58mpg , by my calc based on first fuel up = 55mpg -89% of book.

Normal town driving I get 49 calculated- 75% of book - based on first tank.

The manual says (page 145) the car needs to be run in over 1500KM = 932 miles, and Raisbeck says the engines take 10000 miles before they really run in, hopefully the mpg can only get better.

Mike is dead right if you follow the gear selector the Greenline is designed for slow and gradual acceleration through the gears maximising the engines power, giving good economy - who everyday really drives like that?

From the same German website the Toyota Prius is doing an average of 54mpg book 70+.

Just to add,put VPower Diesel in this fuel up and the car does not like it nothing at bottom end then it just takes off.

I think your figures look dreadful although its too early to attach too much significance

Greenline II claims:-

Urban 68.9

Combined 83.1

Extra Urban 94.2

40 Greenline II users on www.spritmonitor.de users have reported an average fuel consumption of 61.6 mpg - one user has done over 12000 km and got almost exactly the same average.

Pathetic

Been watching this debate with some interest; as one poster has mentioned "MPG is the new 0 to 60". Couldn't agree more - go to look after the pennies now!

For what it's worth, our FL Fabia 1.2S (70bhp) is currently returning approx 42mpg. That's calculated over 4200 miles and actual fuel consumed - don't have the luxury of computer readout with the 'S'. Our driving is predominantly town based with one or two longer (motorway) runs every week or so. I'm not hugely impressed with this figure but it does beat the quoted Skoda urban figure.

You're doing really well there bob!

Totally agree , MPG is a must for me nowadays compared to having a quick car or a petrol car. When I bought my first diesel car the Fabia vRS I was doing a mixture of both quicker driving and eco driving , since I have bought this Fabia the economy driving seems to have changed me, I actually seem to drive for economy, I've not filled the car up in about a month, I guess with the cost of fuel I'm making mine last so it's not hitting me too hard in the pocket.

Thread resurrection!! :D

Finally, the car has done it! Carlisle to Silverstone yesterday, clear and dry conditions, almost no wind. Cruise set at indicated 70mph, with some small snarl-ups dropping to 55-60mph. Average for that trip read 50.6mpg  even with the obligatory drag-race from the M6 Toll booths :giggle:

The return journey gave 47.6mpg, so it seems there's more uphill stuff on the way back, so lets average it to 48.9mpg

Well impressed with that, I love this engine!

i notice my car is less economical in this freezing temperature even compared to having the air con on. i guess cold temperature and having no air con on is less economical than mild temperature with air con on

Edited by fabia55

33! but then my car has been weird the last time i filled it up - up to now its only been taking 35 litres, the last time i filled it up it took 48!!!!!

I have now completed my first 275 miles in my new Fabia and after filling up have averaged 39 mpg

The mileage included a run to North Wales on motorway and fast dual carriageway of 150 miles

The remainder being runs of about 7 miles in Manchester traffic which is stationary at times.

So for a new car with a tight engine I am optimistic of the mpg figures significantly improving

I am running on Tesco Momentum at the moment

John

39.8mpg in my vRS. Was at 41.8 but some short journeys and cold starts took it down a bit. 60-70 miles a day running on Morrison's petrol.

Arise long-dead thread! :giggle:

New record. Carlisle -> Dumfries just going along with traffic, with air-con running. Computer showed 53.6mpg when I arrived :D Range was up to 470 miles :o

*hugs car*

At last eh mike, I've been getting at least 60mpg from new, awesome little motors and you had air-con on doing well mike

I don't go on such trips that often, only done 5900 miles so far and it will be 1 year old in June.

Not done much motorway in mine. i think the best ive managed around town is 35mpg. which gives a reading of 300miles range.

Ive only done about 500 miles though lol. it doesnt get below half tank before i fill it back up for some reason. Off to Nottingham tomorrow for a remap. will test the Mpg on the way up and then on the way down with the remap.

Hi janner remap?, 500 miles on the clock so it's brand new issues with warranty ? How will you get around this?and insurance premiums?

i bought the car with the plan to remap it mate. If i was worried id have bought second hand. any issues as a result of the remap and im stumped, but the likelihood is low and a risk im willing to take. I do very low mileage anyway. Ive had the car now and only managed 500 miles. tomorrow will nearly double that.

Insurance isnt an issue, considering the state of tune of the last car, before i swapped the insurance is way lower with the fabia and stage 1. Cant remember the difference in premium, it wasnt much

Be interested to see the results, I fancy a Shark map too as they claim circa 200bhp which is good but doesn't stress too many parts! Sort of a 3/4 map as others show 210 - 225bhp! :)

Oh so the remap will be very much hidden so will not show up on servicing, is it a revo remap or similar? Cost and gain? Bhp 240? What will you achieve in mpg and mph?

240hp off stage 1 :giggle: :giggle: maybe on superchips or AMDs rollers, but id be expecting a realistic 205-215hp.

Mph wont change, just the time to reach the speeds will be faster. No idea on MPG. on my lastr car there was a 2-3mpg gain when driven normally and 2-3mpg loss when driven hard.

Got the 105 FL Fabia estate with just over 600 miles on the clock. I`ve just about completed a full tank of fuel, and got about 300 miles. Now to be fair, thats all round town motoring but at the expense of driving it like a `maiden aunt`..So not very impressed to be honest..I`m not a great believer in the theory that it will improve when its got more mileage on it ..The maxidot gives an almost constant read out of 39.1mpg so that seems to be well out....I`m taking it on a long run at the end of this month and I wait with bated breath to see what that brings. I have seen other reports saying that these engines seem to be very thirsty..

Havent had the Air Con on either, but for this tank, I`ve filled it with super grade petrol and going to spend the next few weeks still driving it like a `maiden aunt`!!

Is it just me , or whats the general verdict ...views would be appreciated....thanks

I.ve got a 1.2 tsi with just over 1000 miles on the clock and i'm getting just over 40 mpg. I think this will improve as I put more miles on the clock. My last car was a 1.8 Civic and I got 38 mpg with that.

but if you look at the before and after dyno graphs for these 225Hp stage 1 cars, at standard they are showing 195hp which is just ridiculous. Ive had mine on the rollers and it made exactly what it should have 177hp (so 1 hp down on stock figures, but it only had 200ish miles on so maybe a couple more Hp once its worn in). Its just the usual few Hp chasers who go to AMD techniks rollers or other fabled dynos, find an imaginary 15hp due to the generosity and unrealism of the rollers and then think they have these huge figures.

I've been on AMD's rollers and on JKM's (dyno dynamics) in my MK1 vRS.

AMD = 157bhp and 259lb/ft

JKM = 152bhp and 255lb/ft

Both pretty even, taken a year apart, JKM first then AMD. I agree its all a lottery but when a standard car pulls standard figures somethings being done right :) I'd hope for 205-210bhp and be well chuffed!
