Whats your doing to the gallon

The wife drives to work stop start all the way which won't help mpg, i'll see how things progress. When i bought my bike at first i was getting 36mpg but now get around 45mpg.

I done a round trip to nottingham today about 250 miles (mostly motorway) and managed 48 mpg (trip 1), I stuck to about 62mph much of the way. car as now done 1000 miles. I would usally drive a bit faster but just wanted to see what mpg it could do.

thats awesome

We've just come back from a trip to France, the Lot valley to be precise. I had a fairly light load but carried 2 bikes on the roof. We covered 1950 miles altogether of which 1700 was motorway/autoroute driving at speeds around 80mph going on for 90mph where conditions allowed. The trip computer showed 46mpg for the whole journey which I'm happy with given the way I drive.

I second that.

My wife's new TSI (85) has achieved 43.6 mpg over the first 691 miles of its life. Mostly local trips as well.

Got the data off the computer which I know can sometimes be a trifle questionable, but nevertheless very impressive for a tight engine.

Makes me wonder about my oil burrner.........????

my little car reckons its averaged 46.2 mg in its first 170 miles and thats with me being a bit unsympathetic to it at times. WOuld be about right though I think as i put £25 in it and its still got just under 3/4 of a tank left in it!!!!

Hello

My Furby MK2 2008 model with a 1.9TDi 105bhp engine returns average week 52.1mpg drive progressively on my 15 mile trip from home to work and 15 mile back (150miles) and 70 miles a week driving mainly around town and neighbouring town of sherborne, dorset....

However on a trip from yeovil to my dads in exeter (47miles A3088, A303, A30 then local roads in exeter) I get 65mpg driving progressively but always at speed limit (Need licence for my Job)

I am heading to scotland for 2 weeks first 2 weeks of october this year, will be interested in it capabilities on this.

The car now has 26,400miles on the clock mpg is getting better, and proformance is a little better i think and i use Tesco Fuel (Gotta get me clubcard points...lol)

I have determined that the Trip comp is 1.98% over optimistic all my figures are based off Brim2Brim method and recorded using an excel document I created.

Overall with power to fuel used ratio in mind and a dated PD Direct Injection engine, I will concur I am happy with the car :D

I concur! My 1.9TDi (now at 23,000 miles) gives a very similar set of figures. Mine also runs on Tesco derv and I've no complaints whatsoever - I take comfort from the fact that engine oil is lubeing my engine's injectors rather than the fuel I put in at the pumps. I'm just loving the dated technology under my bonnet!

Yeah...me too! I mean, under my bonnet not yours.emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

For those of you who want to know the reality of the mpg shown on new cars here is the EC regulation for calculation:

A: The test is outlined in Directive 93/116/EC and provides results that are more representative of actual average on-road fuel consumption than previous tests. There are two parts: an urban and an extra-urban cycle. The cars tested have to be run-in and must have been driven for at least 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometres) before testing.

Urban Cycle:

The urban test cycle is carried out in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20oC to 30oC on a rolling road from a cold start, i.e. the engine has not run for several hours. The cycle consists of a series of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerations and idling. Maximum speed is 31mph (50km/h), average speed 12mph (19km/h) and the distance covered is 2.5 miles (4km).

Extra-Urban Cycle:

This cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75mph (120km/h), average speed is 39mph (63 km/h) and the distance covered is 4.3miles (7km).

Combined Fuel Consumption Figure:

The combined figure presented is for the urban and extra-urban cycle together. It is therefore an average of the two parts of the test, weighted by the distances covered in each part.

This doesnt take in to account wind resistance. One would therefore assume that the best mpg obtainable in real world conditions would never get really close to those advertised under this regulation. Unless of course you drive in a vacuum

Unless the rolling road is clever enough to apply extra resistance to simulate air resistance. But I doubt that is the case TBH.

I tend to ignore the extra-urban figure, and read the combined figure as a realistic target to aim for. Even then you probably won't hit it. I think I could get the TSI to it's stated combined of 53mpg, but I think it would mean driving at about 40-45mph, which is most definately not my style :giggle: If I was going to drive at 45mph, I'd have bought a Perodua Nippa or something.

Yeah...I had that once, but antibiotics got rid of it! emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Ha ha, i second that - although still impressed my car will cruise at 70mph and the avergae consumption just rockets up - its averaging 39mpg on my 10 miles journey to work!

I have a similar commute, and I am getting 41 - 42mpg now.

To put this in perspective, I had a V reg 1.6 Octavia (the good old 8v one with 100bhp) It pulled well and I was very happy with it, but it's normal average consumption was between 35 and 38mpg and that was on a decent run. I did once get it to average 43mpg, that was at about 50mph. The 1.6 that used to be in the Fabia gave pretty much the same economy, so to have a 1.2 with the same power available getting much better mpg is amazing!

Wait till you take it on a long trip, it just keeps climbing, my longest motorway run (90miles) had it averaging 47mpg.

My Fabia vRS TSi is doing 30ish round town on the way to work, and low to mid 40s on the motorway. I don't hang about but don't tend to boot it too much either. I think i get pretty poor round town because I only do 7 miles so its hardly warm by the time I turn it off again.

Just keeping this thread up to date :)

Had a day-trip to Scarborough today, that's 3hrs each way near enough. (Yes, I must be certifiable) After getting rid of the Tesco fuel, I filled it up at Shell. It's already running better, lesson learned. The trip over gave me 48mpg, across some very hilly roads (though I was held up a fair bit at 40mph behind caravans). The trip back ended up at 43mpg, without being held up as much, but having a stiff headwind to deal with (and I confess to indulging myself a bit on the moors roads :giggle: ) which I'm fairly happy with all things considered. :)

Car now has 2600 miles on.

Haven`t worked mine out, but so far and its used 3 tanks to do 880 miles, not sure what that is in MPG though

Well We've had our Fabia 2 TDI 1.4 for just over a month now and we've just filled it for the second time average MPG is 49MPG which is mostly town driving and short hops, with a couple of longer runs thrown in for good measure which is not bad going.

Just done my first fill to fill test on the wife's 1.2 TSI 85 which has so far has a total of 820 miles on the clock. To cover the last 321 miles of mainly rural back roads to her place of work has used 37 litres of fuel, which if my maths is correct works out at 39.4 mpg; this is 2 mpg less than the fuel computer average on screen 2.

TP

Between 58-59 MPG.

33 MPG!!!!

Not good seeing as its supposed to do 50 odd!!!!!

What sort of fuel are you using???I know the mpg seems to vary enormously with these cars but mine (also 105) will do just under 50 on a M-way run especially when you put cruise control on!!..But again only with the much more expensive 99 octane fuel

mine spends most of its time doing short runs and I use the Tesco 99 RON fuel, think I might stop using it if my economy is that poor!!!!

Ross, if I may ask, what miles has she on the clock now? Are you either....over using 5th gear or any of the higher gears eg. taking it too early and staying in it? It may perform a little like a diesel but it still doesn't give diesel economy even using the torque we found. Or...are you revving the n_ts off it? The Tesco fuel definitely doesn't help. A cleaner burning fuel is better.

Your right about the Tesco fuel I think. I`m just finishing off a tank of Tesco 99 and it doesnt do as well to the gallon as Shell V Power..That does make a difference. Its been back to lump running as well grrrr....I follow, from time to time, the correct gear indicator on the maxidot system which should get it in the correct gear most of the time, if it works right!!...

I normally use supermarket fuel beacuse I don't have a choice really, a garage like shell is about a couple of miles away from me ie a 4 mile round trip just to fill up, my local garage is about a mile mil round trip even through it's along the road from me ie about half a mile walking, but due to the area where I stay it's buses only to the supermarket, so for me it's my local Morrisons which is about a 3 mile round trip ther other way, but I have never had any problems using supermarket fuel still return 45-48 in town with my Fabia.
