Fabia vRS engine mounting bolts.......confused

Featured Replies

Hi

At the week end I plan to change the cam belt and water pump etc on the wifes 2006 Fabia vRS (got all genuine Skoda parts and crank locking tool).

The Haynes manual says that the right hand engine mounting and dog bone mounting bolts are stretch bolts and need to be replaced.

But when I went to my local Skoda dealer to order the 8 new bolts I was told that they have done hundreds of Fabia vRS cam belts and have never fitted new engine mounting bolts, and Haynes are wrong..... they are defo not stretch bolts.

I decided to play safe and order the new bolts anyway...... well, I've got them now and it looks to me like the local dealer was correct, and these are defo not stretch bolts.

This has dented my confidence in the haynes manual, and I'm not sure if I can trust the torque values it states for the engine mounting bolts etc.

So I was wondering if anyone on here has done there own cam belt change and could confirm what the torque values are for the right hand engine mounting bolts ie 3 x engine brkt bolts and 3 x engine mounting to engine brkt bolts and the 3 camshaft pulley bolts.

Thanks

Bill.

Official Skoda workshop manual, states the bolts in question are one use only, and MUST be replaced. So your dealer has done hundreds of jobs wrong.

Here is the text from the Skoda Manual

Assembly bracket

Engine assembly bracket

1 - 20 Nm + 90° (1/4 turn) - replace

2 - 30 Nm + 90° (1/4 turn) - replace

Gearbox assembly bracket

1 - 50 Nm + 90° (1/4 turn) - replace

2 - 40 Nm + 90° (1/4 turn) - replace

Thank you

Them torque figures are the same as stated in the haynes manual.

Thats a bit worrying about the dealers going against official skoda advice and not changing the engine mount bolts......and to think some folks regard a full dealer service history as something to be valued :)

They aren't stretch bolts but really only need to be replaced if the green coating is removed.

Lummox is quite right BTW. Not all one use bolts are stretch bolts, they just have that magic green locking compound on them.

Dont think its locking compound. Its normally on bolts that go into or through aluminium, being a steel bolt it stops corrosion.

Looking at the quoted torque figures and the size of the bolts (I seem to remember them being pretty large diameter) I very much doubt that they would be stretched. 50Nm + 90° wouldn't produce enough force to strecth those bolts.

As other have quoted, it's probably down to the coating/thread locking compound or something similar.

I'm planning to do mine next month and was having the same worries about the mounting bolts. Guess I'll order the replacement bolts too. If you get time to follow up with any tips I for one would appreciate it.

where can these be bought from?

I wonder if that's why there seems to be several failure of thread (housing)cases on American hi mileage Golfs ?

Mine came loose a while ago and destroyed the threads in the block in the process. Fortunately I'm pretty good at fabricating stuff so managed to fix it.
