Oil for TFSI VRS

Featured Replies

Can anyone confirm what oil is used as standard on VRS'? As this car is new to me I'd like to know what the dealers are using so I can have a top up on hand.

I'll probably move to Silkolene Pro S (or similar) in the future, i'm guessing it is fully synth 10w-50 but would like to know for sure.

Use only the VW recommended grade. Think it is 506 or 507 and a 0-30W. Do not use anything else or engine may go pop

VAG spec is 504.00[petrol] and 507.00[diesel], usually 5w/30 grade.

This seems like a real shame as there are much better oils out there. This is the first turbo car i've had and I find this a real surprise coming from fast naturally aspirated cars!

I can understand it with the PD unit but not a petrol engine!

So where do people buy this specific oil from? Is it VW/Skoda only?

I found a good deal on some Castrol Edge 5W-30 (VW 507 Spec for variable servicing on the 2.0 TFSi) at Tesco a while ago and bought a small stock pile of it!

£4 a litre so wasn't too bad (usually £15+ a litre).

Best just to get a note of the suitable oils and look out for bargains. I believe my dealer charges around £10 a litre when changed as part of a service.

There is no way using anything other than shell helix can make your engine go pop, and I know for a fact that Fuschs Pro S race spec oil is amongst the best out there. It's used on everything from Type R's to GTR's. I'll have a little look around and see what I can find. I assume opie oils can recommend a suitable alternative (both better quality and cheaper).

Due to the quality of shell oil etc, many people would change it every 6k miles (bet it doesn't say that in the hand book!) whereas a higher quality ester oil will last longer and perform better and is ideally suited to cars where the engine is worked harder. It's also available for the same price of less for what you will be ripped off for buying shell oil.

I'll have a look around and see what I can find - the Castrol Edge sounds like a good price ;)

Get yourself down to ASDA, MOBIL 1 ESP 5w/30 504.00/507.00 for £32.00 [5ltr]. The same oil [4ltr] £49.00 at Haulfrauds.

If the car is out or warranty then use whatever brand you like and what grade oil suits your driving style. I personally will only use Millers Competition oil in CFS 5w40 grade. Tripple esters included to make it a great spec. Motul 5w40 300v oil is also great with added esters and smells nice too!

As people are saying the standard oil is 5w30 now. It was 0w30 when your car was made, but not any more.

I'll get a ltr of shell for emergency top ups and source and supply my own for services. Just what I wanted to hear. I'm surprised that there are not more oil threads for the VRS, search threw up very little. It's an important part!

I was under the impression that Shell Helix was a decent oil,I have used it a couple of times in the past and never had a problem with it, I have found most major oil companies products are usually okay.

Checkout Opie Oils - often some good deals on there, and they're a site sponsor. So get a login and mention Briskoda = 10% off.

Oh, and the site will list all the correct, recommended oils/fluids as well.

Cheers wardy. I've always used Opie Oils for my previous cars, I was trying to find out what aftermarket oil most people here use as from previous experience of car forums you find most people recomend the same one or two products. It seems slightly different in this case.

Nothing wrong with Shell Roman.W, but there are much better products available. Companies like Shell pay manufacturers a huge sum of money to 'approve' and recomend their products, hence the sticker under your bonnet. It also makes sense for the dealer network to source the same oil and get big discounts which they don't pass on to you. As mentioned nothing wrong with it but if you read Opies posts you'll find there are much better products for similar money.

The last batch of oil i bought was from Opie ,MOTUL 504/507 specific ,was not cheap even after the special offer that was on at the time, i think it worked out at £48 after delivery, but my car runs nice and smooth and does not need topping up between changes. when i bought my car the first lot of VAG specific oil i bought was called SILVER HOOK which was £23 for 5ltr from Partco. I was never happy as i had never heard of them before, so i changed the oil after 1000miles [expensive flush] .

I tend to use whatever's at a good price, and of course meets the spec guidelines. So in the past that's been Fuchs, Motul, Castrol Edge etc.

I also quite often use Halfords 'own' for top-ups, as it's quite well priced and I have a Trade card too. After all it must be made by one of the big companies and it meets the spec so that's enough in my book

Cheers,

Steve

According to the manual with my '08 Vrs the VW 504 is for Petrol engines on variable servicing and 507 is for diesel engines on variable servicing... Opie Oils website allows you to search for suitable products for your vehicle and gives vw 504.00 which is 5w 30 for all vrs models since 2005.... the sticker under the bonnet encourages you to use Shell Helix....

As has been mentioned, Shell paid Skoda big money to put that sticker there!

I tried opie oils earlier but unfortunately the oil selector tool wasn't working correctly. I'll check it out later. I don't mind paying good money for good quality oil that will help my car run better. Good oil can also prevent top ups between changes and also lubricate the engine better and from a lower temp. Motul, Fuschs etc are generally available for the same price as Shell and do have better performance.

No point dragging this out, thanks for the info everyone.

For info only Halfords oil is made by COMMA who in turn are owned by BP. [who also own CASTROL].

Drop them a PM on here with your car info if you prefer, and Opie will get back to you with recommendation.s

Are you sure BP own Comma?

I've been told Halfords oils are made by Castrol (who are indeed owned by BP) but never heard Comma had anything to do with either.

Edit:

Comma are in fact owned by Esso/Exxonmobil

Yes you are right about Comma being owned by Esso, I was going off what i was told by the daft old duffer behind the counter at my local factors.

Pretty sure the Halfords oils are made by Castrol though.

That's from someones who works for Castrol telling me!

Isn't the best one to use Mobil 1? I have always looked after my cars and pampered them to this expensive stuff.

Define best :)

The others meet the regulations stipulated by VAG, so I have no issue using whatever's the best deal at the time, providing of course that it meets the correct standard
