1.2 litre petrol Octavia

Featured Replies

I presently have a 1.4 petrol Octy Mk II with which I am well pleased, but I may change it for the new model, which has a 1.2 litre petrol. This engine is plenty fast enough for me as my reflexes ain't what they once were, and fuel economy is important to me. I would welcome any comments from any owners of the 1.2 litre as to how they find it, how they reckon it compares to the 1.4L . Thanks!!

Do they do a 1.2 Octavia?

I think they do it with the 1.2 tsi.

I personally would stick with the 1.4 tsi. The 1.2 is going to need to be worked pretty hard to get the power out.

As the old saying goes. There's no replacement for displacement.

On the fuel economy side of it. Would have thought there wouldn't be much between them.

Your right. If you've got to work harder in the 1.2, surely your gonna crease the fuel economy.

I'd stick with 1.4.

Moved :-)

Apart from revs and boost................

Ah yes but we're talking real world driving here where you don't want to be constantly watching the rev counter to keep boost up.

Having said that the 1.2 does have a good torque band from 1,200 to 4,100 rpm so would be pretty driveable from low revs. Combined with the 7 speed dsg I think it must be a pretty nice car to drive and probably doesn't have to work to hard to get you moving... just if you wanna suddenly accelerate your gonna have to floor it and keep it there!

Its a 105bhp turbo 1.2 against a 80bhp 1.4. I think its an adequate replacement. I haven't driven either though.

Nothing wrong with the 1.2TSI in an Octavia. We tested a Yeti with that engine (and subsequently ordered one) and it had plenty of poke. It picks up really well at 1500rpm in higher gears.

Seeing as the Yeti is on the Octavia Scout platform I would say it's a fair comparison.

Same rule as with any engine and any car - go test drive it!

Yes have a look at the Yeti forum plenty of owners are well pleased with this engine; had 1.2 TSI keeping up with my TDI 140 no problem on a recent Yeti mini meet drive round the North York Moors.

We picked up the wifes new Fabia 3 weeks ago, with the 1.2 TSI (105bhp)

I know its a different car, but that engine in the fabia is awesome, and pulls like a train, it drives more like a diesel, the torque in low revs is amazing.

What are the smaller capacity engines like when they come to a hill, can they maintain their speed, accelerate without having to stir the gearbox about?

I've test driven a Yeti 1.2Tsi, was ok in the city, but slow progress motorway and overtaking. I would say that was the bare minimum for a car.

I have a 1.4 Octavia. Respectable performance but the chassis can clearly handle more (e.g. as in vRS). I can't believe there are any worthwhile mpg improvements 1.2 over 1.4 so I would stick with the 1.4. I can get 45mpg out of mine if I am careful so apart from capital cost can't see any reason to have a tiny engine.

emmissions maybe? making it a cheap company car

No experience of the 1.2 - 1.8 TSi is the smallest Skoda engine here in Oz, now the Roomster has been discontinued. Latest evo mag tested a flashed 1.2 SEAT Ibiza recently and liked it, but wanted to see it in a Polo - not sure how it would cope with an Octy's weight though.....
