I bought my wife an MP3 player and she got me broad band. Is there any web sites where you can down load free music, in the way you used to be able to do with napster (legally or illegally) that any one here can recommend?

i understand that limewire is pretty good.

I use eMule which is pretty good.

I use shareaza which can be setup to connect to gnutella, gnutella2 and edonkey networks all at once. You can also use the legal version of napster or apple's iTunes.

Check out www.winmx.com music - movies , just about anything you might want cant be found there, you will need to download a program, but it is free

another legal option is http://www.tescodownloads.com/ Reasonable cheap too.(79p for a single)

...or apple's iTunes.

iTunes uses AAC format for purchased tracks rather than MP3. Something which I didn't realise until I tried to make an MP3 disc up for the car. Also, they are protected, so it won't let you convert them to MP3 either. iTunes store is great if you have an iPod, but not so for other MP3 players.

Another site which is free is Kazaa. There are a few versions of this sharing software, the older versions are free, but you have to pay by song for the newest one, version 3.0. You can still download the old one here;

A handy piece of software for the MP3 player is DB Power Amp which converts your CDs from WAV files to MP3 files. You can download this for free aswell.

Tried Kazaa last night, what a nightmare. All seemed to be working just fine, until Istarted up my PC today. Took about 20 minutes to start and about 10 minutes to load any program! Finally got Kazaa and all the other stuff it had installed off the computer and things are back to normal!

No, Bittorrent is just the protocol, lots of sites still use it.

It was www.suprnova.org that got shut down (along with a few others iirc).
