MDI Cable?

Featured Replies

Does the new Fabia vRS come with a cable to connect to the standard port?

I saw some specs indicating "..with cable"

My dealer says it doesnt :'(

Mine didn't, but yes on the Brochure It clearly says with cable. My skoda dealer did give me a cable of my choice when I asked him about it. I got a USB cable as my iPhone plays music through the cars Bluetooth. My dealer did say that it doesn't as far has he knows but it clearly says "with cable"

I missed out on this freebie!

Dealer quoted £20 usb and £26 ipod/iphone cables, I bought both for £14 on ebay.

On connectivity, at supplying dealers my Blackberry wouldn’t connect over bluetooth, better halfs Iphone linked straight up and synched phonebook. Dealer stated it wouldn’t work with a Blackberry which I was a bit miffed about. However, manually selecting a connection worked eventually with the Blackberry, and after several hours connected, it synched the phonebook also! Only one will connect at a time, last one connected is the first searched for, then it looks for others. Works well in practice.

If you MDI connect the Iphone whilst its bluetoothed, it loses the bluetooth connection, and works as an Ipod only. Its marginally better for music than streaming over Bluetooth as the hardwired connection lets the Swing stereo access the ID3 tags so you have track/artist/folder info, but its not good losing the phone system, so we don’t bother with this cable unless we need Iphone charging and are using the 12v socket. Maybe theres a work-around that I havnt found yet.

So at the moment I am using the MDI-USB lead to connect my 16gb Walkman. I can leave it plugged in, when the ignition is on it connects and charges the walkman, when the ignitions off the walkman goes to sleep. This gives you Artist/Folder search/scan and all track info, and tracks restart from where they left off last time you were in the car. It works well. I have read you can use a usb hard-drive but have yet to try this.

Incidentally the Swing stereo lets you set the ON volume/Phone volume/Speed related volume increase and, if you have reversing sensors, the reversing volume so you can hear the reverse sensors!

Hi

I've just taken delivery of my new Fabia VRS which has the Swing Radio with MDI interface.

I've tried my ipod but the battery goes flat when the ignition is turned off ie overnight.

I now us a USB flash drive but the "initialising PD" message comes up and it takes ages before it starts playing. This seems to occur everytime I start the car.

Am I missing something here, the same USB drive works fine in my wife's smart car but not in the VRS.

Anyone have any ideas please?

No-one should've missed out on this, it is a supplied part of the vRS spec which is supplied by the dealer to enable the buyer to choose from one of the connection options available. If your dealer refuses to play ball, then ring SUK, or refer them to the official memo which advises dealers on this issue, which i'm sure another member can remember the number of.

Or refer them to their own brochures saying 'Inc cable' and ask them to read it out to you.

iPods dont switch off. When the ignition is turned off the Ipod disconnects from the MDI and stops charging.

My old 1G Nano 4Gb seems to survive for a few days with no charge in our vRS but my brand new 6G 8Gb Nano doesnt last the night in my Golf. Just one of those things.

All you need to do is lean over and hold the play button down so it shuts off, simples?

I've recently had a chat with my dealer about this and have settled for a free USB lead. The dealer advises only the USB cable is included with the car but Skoda customer services have told us it is a cable of our choice. I'm not that fussed so i'm happy to go the USB as we'll probably get the Seagate drive anyway as our iPod is 6 years old and rather naff. So it seems it's open to interpretation.

Is definitely cable of your choosing. There is actually a dealer bulletin advising of this.

Went for the iPod one as already have a USB one and was more expensive :-)

It most certainly does come with the cable, alot of dealers just dont seem to realise this. When you order the car the dealership should give you the choice of cable. If your salesman can't read or just doesnt understand the brochure drop a call to Skoda UK and ask them to speak to your dealer :)

When I ordered a cable for our Faba Vrs I got the one which has a USB connector thinking that anything I can plug into a computer I could plug into the USB port on the MDi cable. I did this thinking that I wouldn't have to get different cables for different music players

BUT.....when I tried to get the I-pod to play via this method it wouldn't work. ie:- using the I-pod computer USB cable plugged into the USB MDi cable (2 cables plugged together)

The reason being is that the Skoda MDi / USB cable has a wire missing inside and it won't allow sound to travel between the 2 cables

Skoda have done this so you have to buy cables for each individual music player

Does all that make sense??

Bought mine off eBay for £2 :D
