coolant leak

Featured Replies

:hi: everybody ,iv'e got an 05 fabia vrs .i seem to have sprung a coolant leak .it looks like it's coming from underneath the nearside headlight ,but can't see a bloody thing with the stupid plastic sump guard on ,has anybody got any ideas what it is ,before i start crawling underneath it tomorrow night ????? :whew:

Radiator fan switch.

Had the same thing on mine, I ended up having it pressure tested and needed a new radiator.

Yep I had to have a new radiator fitted on mine about 10 months ago, I had the exact same leak! I think I paid about £60 for a new one.

The seal around the fan switch is more likely than the rad itself - get the garage to show you before agreeing to a new radiator, as it would be easy for a dishonest garage to fit the new switch seal that really fixes the problem as part of (un-necessarily) replacing the whole radiator...

Hi guys,

Thought I would carry on this thread. My 05 fabia VRS is still leaking coolant after 2 months of owning it. Its got a 3 month warranty with the dealer so I'm keen to get it fixed before the warrenty runs out. I've taken it back to the dealer 2 times now to get other things fixed and each time I have mention the coolant level and he keeps topping it up telling me to moniter it. This time he's checked to see if its head gasket has gone says he's done the pressure check and checked for obvious leaks and can't find any. He said its falling to its natural level but this too me seems to be well below the min line and sets the warning light on. Where abouts is the seal around the fan switch so I can look myself and does anyone have any suggestions? Also would I see any smoke out the exhaust if there was a leak anywhere?

Any help or advice much appreciated

Nounou.

Add a leak detection addative to the coolant!

Finding a pin head hole will be about impossible without doing so!!!

First of all it's up to the dealer who sold you the car to fix the coolant leak - whatever the cause. I would tell them to keep the car until it is fixed.

VAG coolant leaves tell tale pinkish marks where there is a leak, so if it's gone from full to min twice, a leak should be visible. If they've done a visual check and a pressure test they must suspect a HG.

A leaking head gasket may not show up on a pressure test, as it may only leak when the engine it hot.

Unless they are pushed, they won't try too hard to find a faulty HG under warranty. In a months time - no problem :(

Just to add to the posts, I also have just had my Radiator replaced after a leak !

admitting it did not loose a lot, but mostly when doing higher speeds it would loose it, but was lucky I had just taken the extended warranty out on the car some weeks earlier, so no cost to me (other than the warranty)

So looks like there might be a trend here where the radiators are starting to leak !

Radiotwo

i replaced my radiator 2 months back as it was leaking from the core. It could well be your rad...

 thanks everybody for all the advice ,it's booked into hobin skoda manchester today friday (03/09/10) they phoned me asking if i could run it in before 3 30 pm thursday,so they could order parts if nessesary .that never happened,so it's going today ,iv'e only had it 3 months so it's still under warranty (TO B CONTINUED).

Thanks for your replies. I think its similar to radiotwo in that it seems to loose more coolant the faster I go. I think as suggested I need to basically not pick it up until its fixed from the garage. To keep topping up the fluid is not solving the problem. Maybe the radiators are a weak point on the fabia. I understand that if an HG goes it produces white smoke at the exhaust which mine doesn't have at idle. I haven't tested to see what it does at higher revs but would white smoke be present then?
