1. Morris Oxford (round shape with column gearchnage)

2. Triumph Herald (fitted with twin carb Spitfire engine. Max speed 50mph and petrol consumption 29 mpg! 15 psi engine oil pressure when hot but I ran it like that all the time I was at university with no bother! Holes in the floor to let out the rain. The introduction of a new fangled thing called the MOT did for it.)

3. Morris Mini Mk1 (lovely little reliable car)

4. Austin Maxi (Got married and thought I needed a bigger car. The colour! The unreliability! Wife refused to drive it as you needed to send a search party out when you wanted to use 5th gear)

5. Austin Mini Mk2 (?) (My first brand new car. Never went wrong. Domestic harmony restored!)

6. Citroen GS (First baby child forced upgrade to a bigger car. Bought brand new. Weird pneumatic suspension, but superb ride. Most comfortable car I’ve ever owned. Was reliable but required a degree in engineering to look after. Luckily a new company car shortly followed so I didn’t have it long enough to suffer any mechanical maladies).

7. VW Passat Estate Mk1. (Company car. Simple mechanically and highly reliable)

8. VW Passat Estate Mk1. (Company car. Absolutely bullet proof. Bought it for my wife when company lease ended, and she kept it for a further 17 years.)

9. Vauxhall Carlton 2.0i. (Company car. Bland but very reliable. Did starship mileage with that one).

10. Vauxhall Carlton 2.0i (Company car – as above)

11. Toyota Camry 2.0 (Company car. Again bland but ultra reliable. Never had one thing go wrong – ever).

12. BMW 520i (It was the 1980’s after all so got a bit flash! Absolute disaster. Poor and expensive dealers with attitude. Bought brand new but rust everywhere after 18 months. Never again for that money!)

13. Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Estate. (I’ve just retired by this stage, and my father dies suddenly so I inherited this one. Used it myself for a number of years. Fairly reliable, but experience spoiled by incompetent and dishonest main dealer. Passed it on to one of my children to run into the ground and its still going strong - now 13 years old with lots of miles on the clock).

14. Skoda Octavia Estate Elegance 2.0PD DSG (Bought new. Whilst generally good value for money, build quality is very iffy. Already had several warranty claims so far for various bits falling off and its only just 1 year old – never had that with any of the above [new] cars). Wife just swapped her Mk1 1.4 16V Fabia Elegance with a new Fabia 1.2 TSI SE a couple of months ago and again build quality standard of the replacement is far short of the old one.

I’ve excluded the bikes I’ve owned. That’s another story

Here's mine, I have given them all marks out of 10 for how I felt about them at the time. Passed in 1993:

1. 1986 D reg red Peugeot 205 1.4XL. put XS wheels on it & GTI front bumper (with no fogs!) 7/10

2. 1986 D reg black Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI .Quite simply the best car in the world (to me, at the time, just mine though, noone elses was as good) lowered on springs at the front. 10/10

3. 1993? L reg red Peugeot 306 1.8XT. I wanted an XS or GTI 6 but couldn't afford one! 8/10

4. 1993 L reg Honda CRX ESI. Manual roof. Was great on our honeymoon to France. 8/10

5. 2002 02 silver Renaultsport Clio 172. The Clios are fantastic IMO, but had to go when my daughter was born. 9/10

6. 2003 03 metallic green VW Passat SE 1.9tdi pd 130 bhp Estate. My first foray into German cars. Still own this beast and love it as a motorway cruiser. Handles like the ark royal. 10/10

7. 2007 07 black Fiesta zetec 1.4 tdci climate. For some reason I hated this car after the first month of ownership. 5/10

8. 2006 56 silver Skoda Fabia vRS. I love cars again now. So far this has lived up to my expectations. 9/10

i put this on another thread but this thread is way better!

A real mix bag here. Nothing really special or massively expensive and in no major order really, used by myself and wife since the early 80s.

Renaults: 4 (banana yellow and our first vehicle and then a second one in blue), 6 (blue old and barge like) and 5 (navy blue very basic and written off by wife in tussle with a tree and one of our family out cold for a short while but has since has become an architect) and silver 21 Savanna 2LRT – the best seven seater we had.

Fiat: Uno first NEW car we bought and not too bad.

Rover: Montegos estates: 1.6 green (engine failure on the way to a wedding) followed by a new 2L gti in BRG – the latter seven seater was not bad and could just about live with the massive number of Citreon BXs that were around at that time. Marina red 1.8L awful second hand car written off after some jerk shunted into the side of it in the middle of Sevenoaks High Street and luckily this was seen by the town Mayor and a trifling amount was paid out to wife.

Ford: Escort red XR3i for 18 months endless trips to garage not good example.

Toyota: Previa – fairly bullet proof against young kids and their mates. Hassle free for five years though massive automatic gearbox 2.4L barge to drive.

Peugeots: 205 TD silver and very nice when new back in the early 1990s and eventually scrapped. 307 TD silver Rapier model (bit boring). 306 Gti’s (x 3 in diablo red, white with sun roof and astor grey and also a Rallye cherry red. Cabriolet china blue. All very nice.

Fabia black VRS
