Which quickshift and how to fit?

Featured Replies

to be honest, the b&m style is a pig to change on the vrs too, you still are meant to split the exhaust (tho i managed without) and to remove heat shields.

Without a ramp full stop its a pain, but i managed, but im stubborn and i wasnt going to give up!

The diesel geek ones IMO look and seem to be the best, considering the lack of clearance issues when fitting a B&M style kit, if i were you i would fit the DG one, for a start it gets great reviews on vwvortex and secondly it looks awesome and thirdly it looks super awesome and allows for a lot of adjustment.

Exchange rate is not bad at the mo, so buy it then sell on yours, it shouldnt cost you too much.

As for fitting, it would be easy to do, and cost much less (i can do the front and back in about 10mins) for fitting than the b&M style anyway, still think you should take it to a tuner rather than a normal garage, or bring it to the OET garage in kent ;)B)

If you want to fit a Forge 5 speed quick shifter they are easy,

Did this mod a few weeks back. (comes with instructions also)

Pic of the standard VRS gear shifter and linkage

By the way the Audi TT gear shifter mentioned ealier is already standard on the VRS as far as I am aware, so would make no difference to your car.

I have the P/N somewhere, but you could probably read the P/N on the shifter in the pic below..

Easy job to do and happy with results, Gear shift is a lot less gear throw

Thanks for that...can you imagine the conversation with the wife...

WIFE: WHERE ARE YOU GOING?

ME: KENT.

WIFE: WHY?

ME: FITTING A QUICKSHIFT.

WIFE: WHATS A QUICKSHIFT?

EXPLANATION FOLLOWED BY A 10 MIN RANT FOLLOWED BY BIG BARNY AND IGNORING ME FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS...I LIKE MY CAR BUT NOT THAT MUCH!!!

  • Author

Looks easy if you know what your are doing...unfortunately!!!

lol,

lmao i know i get the same response.......whats a quickshift... :smirk:

alright Mark, he has a 4x4, and already has the back to front selector (neuspeed), do you have the forge side one too?

ask me what i just fitted.....go on :p

If you can follow most model kit instructions you can do this mod.

trust me easy. Took me 5 min to fit.

I only took longer as i reset the gear linkage which does not really need doing.

OK I will consider giving it a go...I need an idiots guide. So should I get both bits from Forge...like I said I 'apparently' had a NEUSPEED fitted by a tuner...so thinking both short shifter and side shift reduction thingy by FORGE.

think forge have some guides on their site, however mark aka bowders is good at doing write ups so i bet there is a good guide on the site, side will be almost the same process.

if you are changing both, why not get the DG one, it looks to have most adjustability.... i guess sometimes simpler things are easier however so maybe get the forge if you want extra throw on the front and back selector.

Oet,

I want minimal throw on both forward/backwards and side to side throws...I saw somewhere about replacing the standard rubber rings with metal ones (topic in AWESOME GTI section) I just want to make sure whatever system(s) I use will be compatible and work.

So what system would you suggest FORGE or DG?

Edited by Aaquil

well if i didnt have the B&m style one i would be buying the diesel geek one, looks like a really nice piece of engineering http://www.dieselgeek.com/servlet/Detail?no=277 assuming it fits the 4x4, you will need to check with DG. Its roughly £125 plus postage and duty.

Forge ones are still good and though cant see a 5 spd side shifter only the 6spd which is 63, plus front to back at 80 is total of £145 roughly.

I would get the Dg i think...

the bushes you mention will help firm things up if the existing ones are worn, will compliment a quickshift but not do the job of a quickshift if that makes sense

Yes that does make sense so maybe order both?

The metal bushes are a big improvement I think - I have two different sets which replaced all of the rubber gear shift bushings.

Along with the Forge Shifter they make the gearshift feel great.

Details here:

http://www.pimpmyskoda.co.uk/Suspension.htm

The cheap way to do this is the get an Audi TT shift lever for the gearbox cable end.

20% reduced throw, cheap.

I'll post the part number if I can find it ...

Then get a B&M copy gear lever from ebay: Here are two

QUICK SHIFT RACER SHORT SHIFTER VW Golf

SKODA OCTAVIA 1.8T 20V SHORT SHIFTER QUICK GEAR SHIFT

These are git to fit, but well worth it.

I bought the TT shifter part a while back and when it arrived it was identical to my stock one. Some Octavias have the TT one already, some don't.

Just to add to the confusion, CompBrake seem to be on a product range expansion, and now do a large range of quick-shifts

CompBrake QuickShifts

They seem very very similar to Forge ones, but £20 less

Rob Clubley,

Could I use the metal bushings (both types) with the diesel geek quickshift linkage...the ones fitted on the rods seem easy to fit but what about the other ones do they need specific torque settings or just as tight as possible?

So the parts you have liks to for the bushings would they be correct for my 2002 Octavia Elegance 4X4 Estate?

Thanks for the help guys

yes they are not the same parts, the bits rob mentions are like an oe upgrade if that makes sense and should not interfere with the quickshift, only compliment it, either way i think you need to check with diesel geek and with forge that their kits fit awd models and in forges case the 5spd box.

  • Author

So the metal bushings rob fitted should fit fine on my car or not? The last question I wanted answering was...the diesel geek one does it reduce both forward/backward and side to side movement with the gearshift?

Edited by Aaquil

Are you referring to these.

Verdict Motorsport gear shift bushings

http://www.verdictmotorsports.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=0100

I heard about these whilst browsing the VW forums and also our Rob's website as he has these fitted.

Ordered from this US website at approx $22 did not break the bank so I gave it a go.

Easy job to do? No I actually meant the 'Diesel Geek' quick shift linkage. I need to know if all the metal bushings (the two types) and diesel geek quickshift linkage will be compatible.

  • Author

I am sure someone on another topic mentioned that the diesel geek did not produce very good results so they fitted linkage another one ot mentioned here.

  • Author

What does the Neuspeed quickshift linkage look like? I just look at my linkage and it looks like a normal one!!!!

dude you are proper lazy...... ;)

..........look on neuspeeds website, it does not lock like a stock shifter.

Maybe you have a stock one, that would explain why you recon its not very quickshift like!

decided which kit to go for?

I think the bushes would be compatible, but it might be worth asking DG.

I still do not have a clue and am currently not very happy at all as now two cases where a so called reputable tuner has ripped me off...yep they are rated on here as well. The shifter I have looks stock so at the moment I am really concerned...did they actually do the services and cambelt changes on both mine and my wifes car etc. I have lined pockets for nothing in return!!!

1. Did not get Neuspeed linkage I paid for.

2. Did not get full geometry done.

Quickshift wise I do not have a clue...I reckon Forge and the bushings seem the safest bet? One guy on here fitted dieselgeek and was not impressed? Any suggestions?

I wanted the pictures of the item from people who really know... so I can be sure it has not been changed by this tuner as I am still finding it hard to believe that they had the nerve to do this...

Edited by Aaquil

that sucks you have been stung by a tuner, its one of the reasons i do pretty much all my work on my car myself, as i dont trust others, i havent been stung but i prefer to do it myself and learn and save money. I am lucky i have worked on cars since i started driving and have always stuck with vag motors, so have a lot of tools and kind of know how they go together nowdays, i dont know what i would do if i couldnt work on them myself, maybe find a new hobby as it would be expensive.

I can guess who you are talking about but have no experience of their work.

Well i dont have a pic of the neuspeed one, this is their current one on the website

http://www2.neuspeed.com/30/3/0/1663/661089-neuspeed-short-shift-kit.html,

why dont you take a pic of your shifter and show us, we can then see what it is?

I havent heard anything bad about DG, didnt see someone post about it here, frankly it looks like a far nicer piece of kit than the forge setup, however its down to you.

I would get dg, but forge does the job too, however why buy forge when compbrake do the same bits of kit iirc (as posted on this thread previously) for less.

Suggestions are limited to the number (or lack of) kits that are out there as mentioned before.
