turbo on the way out?

Featured Replies

First Id like to say hi. Well Ive had my fabia vrs for about 2 years now and (touch wood) no problems to date. Reading through some old posts i came across one about a whistling noise coming from the turbo, I went on to read that if the turbo makes a noise similar to a police siren then its on its way out. This got me thinking about my turbo......Ive always been able to hear this kind of noise ( even my missus noticed this when we first got together and asked me if there was a police car near by). I assumed the noise was normal, but am worried now after what I read! Any comments will be appreciated.

a bit of whistling isn't bad.....

its more a screeching. im sure someone posted a video of a octavia with busted turbo around a week ago

A little whistling is normal I think.

Does the turbo show signs of white smoke when its on its way out - or is that when the turbo has just expired?

mine smokes alot under load in 3rd ? just had a new turbo less than 800miles ago ?

When my turbo failed, there were no tell tale signs. When it did go pop, there was no oil or smoke either.

My mate happened to be filming when it failed! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_gCfat9QtM. You can just make out the 'pop' and my reaction of 'ohh no' haha.

That'l just be diesel smoke. Hot weather means more smoke generally, as air is less dense, so more fuel is wasted because there's not enough air going into the mixer

Was gona sell the fabia but think Ill keep it now......if the turbo does go Ill replace it.

Same here. Mine went pop but sounded fine up until then. It had a bit of a whistle, but my brand new hybrid turbo has the same kind of whistle too it too.

Moments after the pop it started making a very loud screeching noise (if you've seen my pictures you'll understand why!). No plumes of black, white or blue smoke from the exhaust at all. I got some white smoke from my crankcase vent pipe, but it wasn't really huge amounts either.

On the other hand, I've been in another Fabia Elegance (PD100) with a failing turbo and you could tell that one was going by the whistling it made. Getting above about 3000RPM the whistling became higher and higher pitched until it went in to limp mode. The new turbo on that one doesn't really make much in the way of whistling noises, nor did it on PD105/PD115(?) Octavia.

a mate of mine can get recon turbos for about £450 if it does so no big deal

Ill keep this in mind should it go pop! Looks like I have quite a bit to learn about turbos after spending the past 10 years with a vtec lol

my Fabia vRS did this from new, if the whistling is a low pitched "hollow" sounding whistle when you are accelerating through about 2000 rpm then all is fine, it is just the turbo speeding up to provide boost, mine also made a noise like rushing air when accelerating hard through about 2500 rpm, that is fine too as it is the point at which the turbo is producing max boost. Just remember to treat her right when stopping and starting the engine (remember turbos operate in gases which approach 600oC and can spin at up to 200,000 rpm) change the oil and filter at the right intervals and you should be fine.
