Fl front end, ended up with pre

Featured Replies

There was a very short build period sometime last year where pre-FL cars had the FL interior including the larger wing mirrors.

Here are some pictures of a 2009 pre-facelift Scout with the larger wing mirrors, new interior, updated rear light clusters and tailgate badging...

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/128064-red-scout-pictures/

Oh yeah, knew about the crossover period, just didn't know that the late pre-FL cars came with the larger revised wing mirrors.

It's my long-term aim to track one of these down when the time is right - anthracite CD170 hatch (or combi) crossover pre-FL = job done for me B)

Cheers,

Steve

Hey all sorry aint been updating this thread for a bit and promise i will update it with everything done. Been busy with house and a few other cars over the last few months so my time on the octy has been a bit limited. Also the weather didnt help and skiing with the boys put a spanner in the works lol :). Anyway back to normality now so on with the build.

Few suprises along the way (always is with me lol) with the repair. First one being that following replacing the passenger subframe mount (described in earlier post) i noticed that the thread bolting point on the chassis was slightly damaged and really dont want any of the suspension geometry out in the slighest so dropped the subframe back down and first drilled out the 6 rivets viewable inside the wheel arch and the 4 on the bottom and partially drilled out 4 of the 6 inner rivets (couldnt get to the other 2) to enable me to then bend the mounting around and hit off the last 2 with a chisel as shown below.

aaa33f18.jpg

Then it was the easy task of welding the new mounting on with was £18 from VW (same mounting on the Golf as started with 1k0 so universal part number) shown below

8dbe948a.jpg

Re bolted all the subframe back up and job done.

Then found that the drivers rear wheel had hit a curb during the accident and had been pushed back so sourced a complete rear axle up north and headed up to collect for the reasonable price of £80 (no discs, calipers and arb as didnt need them). Arrived to find that the clown had decided he wanted more than £80 so had stripped some bits off it (why didnt he just tell me and would have worked something out!) including one suspension arm, droplink and few other little bits. Ended up paying £60 with steam coming off my head and got away from there before i did something that i would regret lol.

Decided that i wasnt going to drop the whole rear axle and replace (due to it being incomplete) now and so got the car up in the air and dropped the swing arms and discovered that the drivers was damaged and so off it came and replacement fitted. While there fitted the Eibach rear ARB in about 15 mins (nice and easy compared to the front as described in a previous post!! lol).

Thats as far as i got with that as when its snowing and your changing an axle in a large unheated garage banging you habds feels like hitting them with a hammer lol! I can see that the drivers rear hub aint right and so will be swapping that this week when i start back on the car. Update on this one to follow.

Body work wise the car is pretty much there really other than ive decide that im changing the drivers sill as easier than trying to repair the dents in it (Sill arrived last week) and also gonna replace the rear drivers door as a dent in it and as im painting that side might aswell. Got Golf GTI sideskirts rubbed down and primed to go on aswell and also had the dent in the rear bumper repaired and so refitted that shown below.

8bd50785.jpg

Front end wise its all together without the front bumper fitted as waiting to get everything ready before ordering the paint (obviously need to paint the bumper edges before fitting) and the new screen is in (sorry not the best pic at the mo but will get a decent one asap).

f6281f0e.jpg

So overall not much left to get the car finished and cant wait now to be honest. As the housing for the air filter had a huge crack and i mean huge ;) it was essential that i replaced the standard airbox with a CAI kit (BSH TSI Race Intake) which i had from America for a better price than this robbing country charges and is currently sitting in my attic. Pic below on new golf and tested independantly on a standard mk6 Golf Gti gave 11bhp

I have promised the missus/boss that i will not buy coilovers, a shark remap, downpipe and cat or new rear clusters etc. ;) until my leon is sold so have to be a good lad :).

Sorry its taken me so long to update and will definately make sure that i do keep updating this thread. Got a few ideas for the car for the future and ul be pleased to know that it wont be chav tastic. Below is my leon for hopefully proof i dont do chavvy.

Cheers lads il make sure all progress is updated a bit quicker from now on. Il get a few decent pics when the sill is removed aswell

Good to see an update on it, cheers. And that you're making progress, albeit with a few issues along the way! Always the way isn't it....

Bit of a long shot but does anyone know of an octavia estate being broken as need a few random bits (eg boot catch mech). Cheers in advance

No full cars that I'm aware of, but did see this on eBay. Not sure if it's Mk1 or 2 though.

Quick update on the car and will have some nice photos of progress next week when i can get the car out of the back of the garage.

Right parts wise ive been a very lucky boy and picked up the following bits for much cheapness :).

Boot catch mechanism for £4 delivered (brand new in the box and £72 new)

35W slimline HID kit £25 new with white led sidelights and chrome indicator bulbs.

Brand new primed rear door for £50 (had to drice to get it but hey) so just paint inside then transfer everything.

Tints were limo and to dark for me so got 50% tint (8m £14) and will do all except windscreen (obviously lol)

Audi S3 front calipers, 345mm discs, pads and brake lines for £120 delivered (yea amazed me aswell :))

33757385.jpg

Back to the work done now

Got the rear axle off as still wasnt right and stripped it back to bones and replaced anything that could be a prob and turned out to be a few bent bolts. Now removing was easy enough (can be removed without having to mess with the brake lines other than unclip off the axle) but getting the bloody thing bolted back up perfectly is a right task and although the actual axle is now straight its sitting slightly off so now got a good contact to go on the lazer 4 wheel allignment and sort it.

As im replacing the sill ive stripped down the drivers side which included removing both doors (drilled out the rivets and got the glass and mechanism etc out of each door) and removed front and rear seats, seatbelt.

77656a40.jpg

Got 2 clear days (Mon and Tues) next week to crack on and drill the sill of and replace and then paint time.

Think im gonna loose the rear boot badge and smooth it off and then gonna be trying my skills at window tinting and roof covering.

Update and Photos to follow next week :)

Well been slow again as trying to get time to sort the car is more difficult than i thought lol. Im not saying anything love!! lol

Well had the wheels and grill off and spent ages preparing to paint them.

73990007.jpg

Also got the R32 brakes rubbed down and fitted and heres the results. Wheels go from black to light grey in different light which i like. (Wheels are stinking in the 2nd pic)

Its back on the wheels now (finally) and also removed the little aerials (nightmare job as shed loads of silicone inside to cut out with a blade :(), but will be getting them covered and the roof vinyl'd in the next week. Aint had time to cut the sill off yet but now it moving again can sneak it in the main garage to use the air tools inbetween jobs (hopefully Friday) and then its gonna be ready to paint :). Decided on just fitting Eibach Pro springs at the momment which have sorted the ride height out and will settle over the next few weeks a few more mm. Cant wait to take it for a test drive now as should handle pretty well with the ARB's and Springs.

One thing i cant decide on is whether to remove the Skoda badge from the rear and weld a small plate in before filler to have a smooth boot with just a VRS badge. Yay or Nay folks?

Smooth tailgate....me like!

If you're going to smooth the tailgate and just have a vRS badge I'd suggest getting one from a facelift car as the new style badge looks much better as a stand-alone badge. I think the old style one looks a bit strange without the 'Octavia' badge above it.

New style badge:

New style badge minus the green:

Yea will be fitting the new style vRS badge and moving it to the bottom right of the boot lid i think (be a bit of trial and error), but kind of 80% in favour of smoothing the bootlid now.

A fascinating read! Very interested in this build as I have a silver FL vRS estate!

Really looking forward to the finished article!

Be nice if i someone could photoshop a smooth estate bootlid for me would be spot on (hint hint :)).

Il get the new vRS badge and try it in a few places before actually sticking it on the boot unless someone fancies a knocking up a few more pics lol.

Hey all another update in the story of the Octy :). Well its finally out in the main garage after a while of being locked away for its own safety :).

I made a mistake, yes i know us blokes dont make many, but at least we will admit it when we do lol :). When i refitted the rear axle i bolted it up and the exhaust hanger on the passenger side was below the one on the exhaust which meant that it pinned the exhaust onto the floor of the car oops! Luckily no damage and just had to jack the car up and loosen up the two axle bolts and then fight to push the exhaust forward and luckily there was just enough room. Panic over :).

I needed to remove the drivers side sill due to it being damaged so firstly got the car up on the ramp and cut where i needed to remove. Following that i drilled out all the spot welds on the top and bottom sill (about 80 approx) and a bit of pulling and showing the sill was off.

2c6213a6.jpg

0b81e8a1.jpg

0c736482.jpg

Suprised how strong these cars are built these days! Just look at the scaffolding sized bar behind the sill.

20396252.jpg

With this off it was time to refit the doors and get them lined up so i know where to weld the sill and repair the small area on the rear arch that wasnt included in the new complete sill i bought and didnt need a whole rear quarter panel!

Not to difficult a job to hang the doors as no damage to the pillars and only a gouge out of the rear door (managed to pick up a new primed door nice and cheap) and so only a few adjustments to the rear door to drop it about 10mm on the top hinge and job done (the bolts for the rear hinges which you get access to from inside the pillar is a 47 torx which most sets dont include just incase some needs the info at a later date).

2559b684.jpg

Didnt have any sanding belts for the airline belt sander so couldnt get the sills cleaned up (remove the spot weld remnants) and the new sill welded on today so will have to wait until next week, but broken the back of this job now :).

Got a few other little jobs done like getting the plastics fitted inside the boot catch and rear light area and also was missing two clips for the parking sensors in the rear bumper. Managed to source some from a international ebay seller which were a completely different design, but once fitted look exactly the same as the originals and just needed to increase the diameter of the holes in the bumper about 2mm with a file and 80 grit sandpaper before reaching up inside the bumper and fitting with the double sided tape to secure. Nothing too exciting, but a necessary before painting.

While i was under the car thought i would take a quick pic of the springs and rear ARB fitted as not very often is it up in the air lol. Not sure if i wish the springs were red, but as long as they perform im happy.

Update next week with the sill on hopfully on and then almost painting time
