Can't believe a search hasn't dragged this topic up.

Hasn't anyone in here ever done this?

Son has just put £11 of unleaded in, realised the error, and then brimmed with diesel thinking that would make it ok, doh.

£60 of mixed fuel wasted.

Tank was virtually empty at the time.

Driven 1 mile back home and apparently appeared to be running ok..

I've booked it in and am going to tow it down to my local friendly garage for a full tank drain tomorrow morning, fuel flush and new filter.

IF anyone has done this before, what if anything happened after you'd sorted it?

Particulary worried about a damaged fuel pump now ££££££££££££££££, or are they made from granite?

I reckon it'll be ok TBH. Just keep it brimmed with diesel. :thumbup:

With it being a small amount of petrol, I would just get your car towed back to a petrol station and fill it up with diesel (work colleague did the same with his Grande Punto)

Cheers. As stated in op, my son did actually brim it with diesel at the time.

Bit concerned that 'mileage left' on read out was only 10 miles, so petrol may have been sucked through already.

Really cannot take the chance of running it with this mix, so the lot will have to be syphoned out in the morning sadly.

He has been absolutely 'bricking' it here on his own for the last 2 hours waiting for me to come home.

No point in ranting at him now though really.

On the evidence of lots of other members here, just keep it brimmed with diesel and chuck some Millers to keep the fuel pump lubricated. It'll be fine. Someone did an XC70 this week.....

This happened to me in a Peugeot 2.0 Turbo Diesel in Belgium, the station attendant put 10L of petrol in, unbeknown to me, on driving down the road I could hear the engine sort of 'pinking' and I immediately guessed right. I dived into the next service station and put in another 10L of diesel to dilute the fuel, on unscrewing the cap, fuel blew out of the filler all over me. Partly filled up, left the inner cap off to allow anymore pressurised fuel to vent itself and drove it on low revs until I could get it all pumped out some 20 miles later. I replaced the oil filter ASAP and it ran perfectly well ever after.

I can't find a thread on this. to satisfy my concerns.

It does seem that some engines can sustain this mis-fueling better than others.

Anyone with a 1.3 GM (Fiat based I think) diesel, DO NOT start the engine at all for instance.

Virtually instant fuel pump failure, followed by siezed and totally destroyed engine apparently according to my local friendly Vauxhall dealer techy.

My mate did the same thing today, keep it full and get a double dose of Millers in there or even some 2T oil.

As he already drove home I would think that the petrol/diesel has been mixed in the tank so I would'nt waste money getting it drained.

I filled mine with £30 petrol, didn't realise till it stopped. Just syphoned the petrol out, changed filter, was fine after. Don't bother draining it, just run it, keep it topped up with diesel and millers. Will be fine.

You'll be fine £11 would equate to about 9 litres. Just keep it topped up, If you really want to you can replace the fuel filter but I think you'll be fine!

Whack some 2 stroke oil in if your overly concerned!

Might have be a different story if it were a Common Rail engineemoticon-0149-no.gif

What colour is your car? I'll keep an eye out for it.

The VAG engines which are built to be used in Eastern Europe and in Northern Europe will probably fair better than some other diesels with this sort of thing. They can run on poorer quality fuels and in much harsher environments.

The AA say it's ok if you haven't put to much of the wrong fuel in less that 10% of the volume of the tank.

If you have a look in general car chat, Auric Goldfinger's monster in law misfuelled her XC70, earlier this week.

I would think that £11 of petrol mixed with a full tank of diesel will be fine, especially if you KEEP IT TOPPED UP. But you will want something to lubricate the diesel pump.

My mrs put £40 of unleaded into my car earlier this year. She drove it till it stopped. That was too much to top up.....it had to be recovered, drained, flushed, filter changed and refilled.

If it hasn't stopped already, by which I mean cut out, then I would think you'll be ok. It might run lumpy for a quarter tank or so, but keep it topped and you'll come out the other side.

If it makes you feel any better, I work with someone whose wife filled her car with petrol, had it recovered, drained etc (luckily she hadn't driven it) and it was given back to her. she did exactly the same thing the next day

The sail board garage opposite the Halfway House pub.

Fabia is black on an 05 btw.

I know the one, I live inbetween that petrol station and the one by the Welsh road.

Have we managed to convince you its going to be ok yet? Seriously, get some Millers in there or some 2T oil @ 200:1 ratio and all will be ok. Obviously don't tell your son this, let him sweat for a while :giggle:

In fact, im gonna go and put some in mine while im bored. My mate has left his rx7 here while he works away which runs on 2T @ about 100:1 and he left me a few bottles of the good stuff.

That can't be right my work colleague has a 1.3 JTD Punto, and he drove the car for about 600 yards before the engine cut out. Engine started after a few turns after filling up with diesel, engine sounds a bit rough, but I'm sure it will settle down after a few fill ups

The difference here MIGHT be that the case the techy was telling me about, was a brand new Meriva on the Vauxhall employee scheme that he picked up from the Ellesmere Port factory.

Apparently scheme cars are collected with the bare minimum of diesel in them.

This guy went straight to the petrol station and brimmed it with petrol and without realising, drove off.

He alledgedly only went half a mile before the pump melted and seized the engine.

£6000 later he was back on the road.

He initially tried to blag the dealer and claim it must have just been an engine malfunction!! :D

A sample from the fuel filter convinced him to change his mind, but still denied knowledge of what he'd done, which I suppose is feasable...just.

All above is what I was told.

So anyway Chris, what I'm suggesting here is that your mate with the Punto may have already had half a tank of diesel in it when he misfueled it, yea?

My daughter did the same a few months back £10 petrol in the diesel , mine isa 1.9 tdi octy with the 130 bhp ASZ engine same as in the fabia vrs , she then topped it up with diesel . I put the millers in , and did that over 2 tanks . Then replaced the Fuel filter . Had no problems at all , did not notice any change in the drive . would agree with others here if you refill and keep topped up plus a drop of millers . should be ok If you look on the AA site they say 5% misfule is ok , and they would be acting on the cautios side .

More like 20% mix here John, but I'm feeling lucky today.

I'm shortly going out to Halfruds to get some of this Millers you all seem to speak so highly of, and then I'll do as you 've done over the next few days I think before lobbing a new filter in.

Due for it's 80k service iminenetly anyway which includes a new fuel filter so that's handy.

Mrs Ree was due to take the Fabia to Anglesey this morning, but I've decided to give her my van instead....just in case of slight possibilities of coughing spluttering etc on the A55.

Don't want her going into full panic mode and then badgering the Mr Ree Rescue Service.

Went in to see him to tell him I was going to take a chance, as my son had already booked the Fabia in there for draining last night.

He looked at me and shrugged his shoulders and advised me not to, as apart from the pump, the injectors can become damaged too, and they are mighty expensive to replace apparently.

At the end of the day though, he said, your choice, entirely up to me, and he wouldn't mind either way...he is actually that sort of guy, not pushy at all..

I instantly got cold feet, and left it there with him.

£50 to drain including £20 of fresh diesel, new filter from LVW factors, £21, and a bottle of Millers for a tenner.

Peace of mind, and no worrying every time the car coughs, PRICELESS!

i DO appreciate all the replies btw, but I suppose it was lurking in the back of my mind that a Skoda techy might come and read this thread in a few days/weeks time and exclaim his absolute horror as to what I was about to do.

Contamiated with petrol.

Why? A fuel filter is to filter out small particles in the fuel and to separate out water. Petrol doesn't have any particles and is fully miscible with diesel. Hence petrol cannot contaminate a filter...
