Bit Torrent etiquette?

Featured Replies

Dunno if its me being a bit stoopid, or not reading up on this, but I just got an album via bit torrent, but when I clicked the cancel button (about 30 seconds after the d/l had finished) my PC threw an exception error at me, and the internet stopped being "internet" - "page not found" kept coming up.

I just wondered, am I supposed to be gentlemanly, and leave it uploading for a while, once I've had my bit. And is there "something" in the bit torrent software that moans and groans when I cancel without having let it upload for a while?

Any clues would be cool, because I can't keep rebooting my PC after every download.

the unwritten rule is to upload for a while after downloading, it shouldn't really slow your connection down but it wouldn't work if everyne just downloaded.

What client are you using?if you are using the official or shadows experimental, then don't in my experience they are useless.the best one i have found is azureus runs faultlessly and allows multiple downloads/pause/resume/upload bandwidth throttle etc etc, what this program doesn't do isn't worth talking about:thumbup:.I found with the official program if you stopped the download, you would then have to go back to the host site and restart the tracker, very annoying and sometimes the download would get stuck at 99%

Of course this is my personal opinion,i'm sure others will recommend other equally as good clients.

Jason,

As you are probably downloading faster than you have uploaded, it is considered good form to keep uploading till you have uploaded 100%, not just downloaded 100%!! this may take a while, but it keeps the whole thing going for longer. :D

Oh right. :o Didn't really twig on to that one. But yeah, on this album it was downloading at like 60kb/s+, but only uploading at around 15kb/s. Next time I'll try leaving it some time.

The exception error says something about an exception error in "vxd" - I dunno what vxd is apart from a file derivative in my systems folder.

I have just started using the whole bittorrent thing, I'm using an application called BitComet, seems very good if you are looking to try a different app.

I'm happy with, the humourously titled, ABC (Another Bittorent Client):D

Another ABC user here. Simple and does what I need eg. throttled uploads etc.

Started with the defaut bittorrent in the first half of 2003 for the not yet released episodes of 24, day 2. Fantastic prog!!

So who do you guys use for bittorrent listings... seems they are being shut down by the day?

http://www.torrentreactor.net/index.php is still working.

**Not child/work safe**

the Bittorrent community is fighting back, with new, improved protocols, to be released soonish i hope.

lmao at the most popular downloads on that link.not work or child safe :rofl:

Oops, sorry!

Thanks for pointing it out Jason, now edited.

www.lokitorrent.com is another.

Just found it, seems pretty good. Not sure if work/child safe but seems to have loads of TV shows etc.

Tried ABC.. tried torrent reactor...

Blinking slow!! Unless I open up my firewall to all the req ports, which are well known thus vulnerable to attack.

Too greater risk IMO...

Was slow for me too. Have you throttled back on the upload? I keep mine at max 10-15k and get fantastic downloads. If I let the upload max out at 25-30k, it becomes a very, very slow affair.

Obviously also depends on the number of seeders of a particular file...

Also, another point to bear in mind is that it can take a little while to reach good speeds as your computer finds more and more sources of the file. It isn't always an instantaneous great speed. Often, I've been only at 10k download for the best part of an hour, leave it for a bit and 100k!!

A watched kettle.......:D

The Pirate Bay, comes up as foreign, but you can work it out.

Also use PeerGuardian Lite, but haven't got a clue if its doing any good? Just waiting for the authorities to come knocking on my door like everyone else:D

After trying bitcomet, I've had to uninstall it because it was going a bit slower than normal. Just got the scissor sisters album in 15 minutes using the normal method. :D
