Hi Guys,

I have a Yeti Diesel (new) SE model, and would like to mount my tomtom on the drivers side of the windscreen I already found out the fuse box is in the engine compartment. Has anyone already done this, and can offer tips/hints/method?

TIA

Hi Jim, I have a diesel Elegance too. :)

Kitten hates mounting out Garmin Nuvi 1490TV in that position so we have the suction disk on the cover of the dashboard compartment and just let the leads dangle down the front of the dash, so sorry I can't help further :'(

Like Mac I've got a Garmin Nuvi that I have suction mounted to the screen just to the right of the dashtop box, so that I can still open it, and ditto, the lead drapes across to the socket . They don't get in the way there. I tried it over on the right of the screen but couldn't get the lead to it easily.

Are you sure about the position of your fuse box? My main one is in the driver's end of the dash.

I to have just taken delivery of a new Yeti and wanted a neat installation for my Sat-Nav, (Garmin).

I have made a small bracket which allows me to house the unit in the "Top-Box" (centre dash) and found a simple way of getting a "Switch live" or "Ignition Live supply to it without any wires showing whatsoever. Being under the lid of the box, the Sat-Nav suffers less from reflections on the screen and as the lid is plastic has no effect on the GPS.

The installation is quite compact and the Sat-Nav is housed in the box when not in use. Access into the top of the dash is via the top box. This is easily removed; just lift up the internal rubber mat and two "Torx" [T20] headed screws are there. Remove these and lift up the front of the box and out it all comes.

As soon as I can I will post the instructions and photographs. In the mean time check out my solution for the "Ignition Live" supply - Don't bother trying to find one at the rear of the Radio - there isn't one!!! (Can-Bus controlled).

Hope this helps............will post as promised ASAP in the next few days................................The Great Yeti

Hi, sorry to anyone following this thread! It has taken me a little while to produce the guide to installing an "aftermarket" Sat-Nav in a Skoda YETI. Pressure of work and visitors are my excuse. Anyway here it is at last!

Fantastic info there, thanks a lot.

I've been struggling to find a way into the dashboard; the SM is so well put together that there dont seem to be any voids within the dashboard area that can be accessd easily.

I'd found out how to remove the small cubbyhole behind the gear lever if anyone's interested: Unclip the base of the gear lever boot from the centre console by gently pulling upward the edge nearest the front of the car & gently working around the edge until it all lifts off (it's just a push fit). Then remove the two Torx screws at the base of the box , which then pulls up slightly & out forwards. However, whilst this reveals a substantial void behind, I've not yet found access to anything else from this space! eg, can any of the switch blanks be removed, & how without braking anything?

One warning though if anyone intends running wires from the fuse box to the centre of the car: keep well clear of the knee airbag assembly, you dont want any wires anywhere near that in the event of an emergency inflation!

Hi Speedsport. Good information on removal of the small cubbyhole behind the gear lever. I also need to remove a switch blank and am wondering how? ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE LISTENING! - Two guys here would appreciate it very much if you can help!

Regarding further access to the dashboard area Speedsport, check out:

  1. Access to the rear of the Yeti Radio and in particular Removing the Bolero Radio (this is the PDF file on "how to")
  2. Removing the Yeti Glove Box and again the PDF file is Skoda Yeti - Removing The Glove Box

Hope these help! Perhaps you could produce a "how to" with pictures on the small cubbyhole removal? I would gladly help if needed...........Thanks again

Speedsport,

when you remove the gearlever gaiter are the wires for the between seat power socket available to be used?

Hi Llanigraham. As no reply had been posted to your query on the wiring, I investigated Speedsport's suggestion regarding removing the storage compartment in the centre console, (cubbyhole).

Once you have removed the Gear Selector gaiter and then the storage compartment you have access at the wiring for the centre tunnel. It is rather restricted but you can get at it! I have started a new thread at: http://briskoda.net/...ge-compartment/

with a link to a PDF file which shows "How & What" ..............Link to PDF

Hope this helps! with thanks to Speedsport for the original information............................................The Great Yeti

Hi Graham

Way back in the dim and distant past (last September), I missed responding to your question - apologies - but the Great Yeti did a far better job that I could have done anyway, so I let him have the last (excellent) word.

Did you manage to gain access to the wiring loom that goes to the power socket? Or even find a way of releasing the socket itself from the console?

Access to the loom appears to be relatively easy on a DSG fitted car, but the loom is so tight on my manual version that I can't even get hold of the wires, never mind link into them. I'd hoped to be able to tap into the loom at that point to get a 12v 15A feed for a DIN power socket but I'm still struggling!

How did you get on?

Sorry John, haven't got around to it yet. Hopefully now the brighter nights are here I might get some of the jobs done:

internal power supply

fit aux lights

fit led front interior bulbs

tidy up the extra boot lights

etc!!!!!!

No need to apologise Graham! Sounds as though you've put things off for exactly the same reason as me!

Now that the weather is somewhat warmer & it's not precipitating down, I finally (last week) managed to get one of the switch blanks out in the vain hope that I could mount a DIN 12v socket there. It comes out quite easily once you gently persuade off the radio/air con surround trim which otherwise holds the switches & blanks captive. Then it's just a matter of carefully prying out the blank by squeezing the retainers top & bottom with a bent spike, being very careful not to damage the "brushed stainless" surround.

However, having gone to all that trouble, I still haven't yet used the resultant aperture, as I cant find a way of gaining access to the rear of the switch area to fasten the DIN socket in place. Drat! On top of that, I also haven't found any way of running a live wire through the firewall from the fuse box by the battery. There's just too much sound deadening insulation and other "stuff" hidden inside the dashboard, including the air bags of course - which I don't want to go anywhere near.

I think I'm going to have to resort to running my live feed from the driver's side fuse box, using a doubler off one of the power socket fuses there. This of course assumes that I can find a way of routing the wire across inside the dashboard to the centre console area - and making sure it doesn't rattle against anything in the future. Oh, and there's a knee airbag there that I need to keep away from too.

As for the boot light, I've velcro'ed my 12v florescent inspection lamp to the O/S hook-rail so it plugs into the power socket when needed, but it is far from ideal. More thought required here I reckon.

I was thinking of upgrading the rear passenger compartment interior lights but have not yet figured how to access the bulbs. The handbook very helpfully says it's a "specialist garage" job.

Well, my philosopy in the past has always been if they can do it, so can I - once I figure out how, without breaking something!

These blinking Yetis, they are just too well made! :S

Rear passenger comp. lights - spring on front facing edge, just pry with trim tool and unit will come out. Replace bulb with LED - not on canbus IIRC

Makes vast difference.

Also done front console bulbs too and glove box.

John

did you see my "cure" for the boot lights? A pair of small LED DRL's from ebay tagged onto the back of the fitted light. There is a picture in the relavant thread. My wiring needs soldering and some heat sleeve. I have also got some LED strips that I am thinking of fitting above the hatch.

Merlinman,

good to know the interior lights aren't on the canbus system as I have a pile of LED sidelight bulbs from my old car that look as if they will fit. The front ones seem to need a fair bit of dismantalling to fit.

I have to do all my work in the street as we have no garage or garden. Currently the house and shop is on the market and I have insisted that the next place has got to have a drive and garage. Been looking at a bungalow with a double length garage but found out today it has been sold!! Beggar!!

The front ones are easy least to change. Just pride the cover off gently. Took me all of 2 minutes or so to change my fronts. What a difference. I can now read addresses at night to put into my Columbus! And write reports which I can read later. Lol

What the actual frosted lenses?

Instructions I got from Tim entailed removing the glasses box/cover and then unscrewing half of the roof unit!!

No not the lenses, but the rectangular surround around the front reading lights. I just very carefully prised the panel off.
