Scuttle Panel Removal

Help! After deciding that I needed to try and sort my wiper problem out, I've removed the wiper arms and the rubber trim along the edge of the scuttle panels, but how the devil do you get those things (the panels) off. After peering underneath them I can see that part of the wiper linkage doesn't look right (like a nut or circlip has come off) and that could be the reason why the wipers aren't working correctly. Any advice on how to get the drivers side panel off would be greatly appreciated.

BTW - just to provide a little amusement, I managed to drop the little round cover off the drivers wiper arm into the scuttle area. When I eventually loosened the panel enough that I could get my hand in, I managed to knock the damn thing down the drainage channel. In the vain hope that it was inside the wheel arch liner, the front wheel came off, the mudflap and liner came out (well, only part of the liner), but to no avail. Peering underneath I spotted a rubber bung (of sorts) and pulled that out - hey presto, one wiper arm cover appeared to have popped out. A twenty minute job turned into one considerably longer :o:o
